It appears that Clint Mansell is doing the Mass Effect 3 soundtrack! I've heard the Requiem for a Dream soundtrack and really liked his work in it so this is fantastic news.

Be that as it may, I really, REALLY love Jack Wall's work with the francise so far as best I can tell this is Clint Mansell's first video game.  I just hope he can deliver on his typical win without stearing Mass Effect 3 in some new, drastically different direction.

So there's a confirmed 4 player co-op mode coming to Mass Effect 3.  It sounds like it may remain optional though and while it can have a baring on your single-player playthrough, it is not required.  It is not playing through the campaign as 4-player, but some "Special forces" co-op mode called "Galaxy at War".  More on this when we learn more.

Well now I know where the Battlecast Primetime people went to get more work...

Yeah so this video is a 4min interview about Multiplayer in Mass Effect 3.  On the one hand, being able to play as a Tourian or Asari is an exciting prospect for me.  On the other hand, they still haven't sold me on the idea that this is the game to add multiplayer to instead of just making a Mass Effect 3 multiplayer title that has nothing to do with my single player story campaign.

HA, awesome. Plus ending was hilarious XD

I love me some Mass Effect but I got too much to play right now. Plus I've been wanting to play Arkham City since it was released but other games kept coming my way. Once I finish Vanquish I'm picking up Arkham City and that'll no doubt eat up my time. Maybe after that I'll get around to ME3.

I've got it coming from Amazon.ca (screw Gamespot/EB Games) so I'm expecting it, but not in a rush. Still working on my current ME2 playthrough.

I've got it coming at launch from Amazon. I would definitely like to do the multiplayer with some people, possibly as a game night?Hmmm. I need to find my old saves. I think they're on my laptop still, so transfer time.

Also... Space Marine.

After watching some gameplay footage of the Co-Op it looks real neat.  I can't help but wonder if this wouldn't be better than Space Marine's Co-Op mode if for no other reason than everything is unlockable via co-op and it appears to use more of a exp/money system for progression over the CoD style "accomplish random shit during games" sorta thing.  Though, then again it won't have Assault Marines, and we clearly are fans of Assault Marines here.

Either way I've yet to order it, but it sounds like the co-op alone would make it a good move for me to order now so I can have it available next week for play with peeps.

Poor Skyrim... I'll finish you someday I swear!

UPDATE: Pre-ordered the N7 Digital edition from Origin and downloading the Demo now.  Looking forward to tasting the co-op.

Played some of the Demo today.  To my surprise while it is a lot of fun, it did not feel particularly more fun than Space Marine's.

It's got some definite points in it's favor.  Mass Effect 3's multiplayer has that "RPG element" that Mass Effect provides, so there's a greater sense of persistence.  At start you can create a human character (male or female depending on class, e.g. male soldier, female vanguard, it seems random) and start playing.  As you play you earn XP for getting kills, assists, and completing waves and objectives.  You also get bonus XP for seeing a way through to the conclusion, even if it is a negative conclusion (to discourage disconnects).   As you complete objectives you will also earn credits.  Credits are spent on "packs" which provide a random assortment of items like consumables, weapon mods, and sometimes the ability to play as a different gender/race on a given class.  The packs seem to have a Magic-Booster-Pack sort of flavor in that there's one you can buy that is just full random and another that costs more, but you are guaranteed to get x number of "uncommon" items in it.  The XP spend much the same way you did on Shepard and his/her crew in ME2.  You have abilities that improve along tracks and earning XP gives you level ups which give you points to spend along those tracks. Interestingly you can also choose your two guns going into battle, and the choice doesn't appear locked by class.  What I mean is in ME2, you could not equip a Vanguard with a Sniper Rifle.  This is not true in ME3's multiplayer.

The big thing that sets it apart from Space Marine is the game play.  If you've played ME2 you have a pretty good idea of what to expect - cover based third person shooter with special abilities tied to the number keys.  ME3's multiplayer also has the Gears of War style "Bleed out" mechanic in place, which is good because I feel like ME3 is less forgiving than it could be about walking around a corner into a pack of enemies you didn't think would be there.   The other interesting angle of it is that you have a limited supply of Medi-gel, which you restock by purchasing the above mentioned 'paks'. Any time you are down and bleeding out, you can use your medi-gel to raise yourself, which is handy in those last-man-standing sort of situations.  A lot of ME2 powers, like biotic charge, have made a come back, and they've added new ones.  While ME3 does introduce melee attacks, there is no straight melee class like the Assault Marine.  Finally, to encourage team work, the mission set ends with an extraction phase in which everyone on the team earns a bonus if everyone makes it out.  Not that this guarantees team work as playing with randoms today has taught me, but it is a thing.

As always with a team based thing like this is how much fun you have is tied to how good your team is.  My time playing with random people was sort of hit or miss.  My first few games I was kicked out of for being level 1.  Then I had a round that went quite well, people worked together and were helpful.  Then I had another round right after it where people tended to split up and not help each other, and one guy in particular's obsession with lone-wolf sniping got us all killed.  Oh yeah, that's the worst part - get a full party wipe, you fail the whole mission and are sent back to your lobby.  It feels a little harsh, though at least a Bronze Difficulty with four people, it also feels like "Well it's your fault" and less unfair.

One last note though - ME3's multiplayer does the same thing Space Marine exterminatus occasionally asking you take a point, or kill a specific guy, or activate some doodads.  What is nice is that these objectives feel more varied than in Space Marine, and your mission commander gives you reasons to do them like "Salarian Intel dropped some info here, we need you to hack it off these computers" or "We have an opportunity to take down some high ranking personnel.  Get to it!"

So yeah, while this is fun, I still feel like Space Marine's refreshing take on third person shooting, sans-cover, with jump packs, and the huge diversity between weapons, makes it the more fun game to play at the end of the day, so I wouldn't pick up on the multiplayer alone. Since a bunch of us will be getting ME3 for the single player anyway, I DO think we should throw down some game nights on it.  Although who knows, maybe my less-favorable opinion is because I haven't played it with the lot of you guys yet.  I will say, knowing that the demo ends Monday makes me feel silly for not suggesting a game nights romp on this last week since the demo is all free and stuff.  Oh well.
