Already preordered when I first saw it on steam for 10% off (apparently it still is). :) I thought it looked interesting when I saw it. I kind of wish I'd gotten into the Civ 5 box at PAX and seen it there. They're adding the main things I felt were missing from this version of Civilization, like spying and being able to found religions to gain benefits. I always bee lined for the first religion available in the last one, so I my civilization usually ended up Jewish if I can remember right. Anyways, If they're implemented as well I feel the rest of this version is then this should be a good expansion. Also... Space Marine. |

Apparently this guy has been playing a civ 2 game off and on for 10 years and this is the result.
(Figured this was a semi appropriate place to put this post since probly only people who play civ 5 would care.) Also... Space Marine. |

I haven't made up my mind yet if Gods & Kings should be its own game on the site yet. Also, I dunno if you all caught this, because I missed it, but on the details for the Civ 5: Gods & Kings
So normally I'm like "Scenarios meh" but DID YOU READ EMPIRES OF THE SMOKY SKIES?!?!? HOLY SHIT THAT SOUNDS AWESOME. I also am glad I was able to fit in a game where I won a Culture victory before the expac came out. All that leaves is needing to get a diplomatic win and then I can at least say I won all the ways normal Civ 5 allows. Also here's a video that explains more about Religion and Espionage. Empires of the Smokey Skies sounds pretty darn awesome. I may look into this a bit more. To be honest I only just yesterday started giving Civ 5 some serious attention. I got it awhile ago as a gift but only played it a little bit due to having a ton of games at the time. I'm thoroughly enjoying the base game on it's own right now. Loving the additions to the game and simplifications. Hex grid makes the map feel a bit more open and I like the removal of "stacking" units. That always felt weird and became a giant mess after awhile to me. I actually don't mind the removal of religion, I never honestly bothered with it in previous editions. So far, really enjoying it. ![]() |

The thing I miss from older Civ games was the political system - that you chose your government system and it changed things. Yeah this is sort of pulled off by the Policy system, but in Civ2 choosing to go from Despotism to Republic required a few turns of revolution and slowly ceded more power to your Civ. It also offered various passive benefits, and it felt right with history and stuff. That feels more missing than the lack of Religion. The thing I do find fascinating about religion in Gods in Kings is that it sounds customizable. In Civ II I think they had religion, but they were all fixed, and once one civ founded a religion there was little to no benefit to adopting someone else's religion - hell it'd give them some control over your people, why would you want that? Here I like the idea that you could "found Christianity" but then Christianity might be completely different by the time you do so. Still, it's a good game. I also like the optimizations. Some of the things I don't like as much, but in general I agree with the streamlining. The fact I can start and finish a game of Civ in about 8 hours of play is awesome (I did so this weekend, first Cultural Win Woo). I think Alpha Centauri is still my favorite game like this, but Civ 5 is pretty much my 2nd place now. We set Wednesdays on Fire! |

Not sure if anyone cares, but there is a mod for Civ5 to add the old Alpha Centauri factions as playable cultures! Only the originals, but the link is http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=218992696&searchtext=
There is also a map of Planet http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=220026971&searchtext=alpha+centauri
I've not played it yet, but if anyone is interested in a co-op game, let me know. |
