So. Borderlands 2.

I was planning on giving this a pass. Especially since Torchlight Ii comes out September 20th. I know other people liked the first one more than I did.  It comes out 9/18. Which is next week Tuesday.

I do know one thing for sure, if I do get this I'm not repeating the mistake getting it for the 360 was.  God that was dumb of me.

I'd like to give it a go sometime but right now I'm probably going to pass. Maybe in the future. I'm fairly busy with GW2 and Darksiders 2. I additionally need to get the new Transformers game that came out since I really enjoyed the first.

Additionally, yeah, I'll not be buying it on the 360 either.

For when we get around to it, Kotaku put together these tips for playing Borderlands 2.  I'm really dropping this hear as much to remind myself  as it is to share with others.

Adam turned out to be my Secret Santa and was kind enough to get me Borderlands 2! I was able to get it installed and play it over the past week or so and figured I'd give my first impressions.

In the first game I picked Lilith, the Siren, cause honestly she was the only one that really appealed to me. So again I've picked the Siren, Maya, for this game however I gotta say it was a tough choice as the other characters are much more appealing then the previous game. At somepoint I'll no doubt try out Zero, the assassin. But anyways, I'm about level 11 right now and am thoroughly enjoying the game. I feel at the very least the story and setting are far more enjoyable. First off, it seems like at the very least the areas aren't purely desert (thank god). I'm only a few hours in but most of it has been a snowy area. I guess it's just swapping sand for snow but I fucking hate desert levels and Borderlands being one giant desert level did kind of grate on me after awhile. Snow is much more preferable. Secondly, the first game basically had little story or direction besides “find the vault” and “kill these random baddies cause they're baddies”. While Borderlands 2 doesn't change this up a whole lot, you're still a vault hunter looking for a vault and killing baddies, they have at least given you a primary antagonist who is out to kill you and all other vault hunters. His name is Handsome Jack and he is a very entertaining villain. I haven't had too much interaction from him as I am only starting the game so he could end up being lame later but for now I can say he has an excellent introduction and I wanta kick his ass.

It's also probably a small thing but I think it helps that I'm playing on the PC over the 360. I have no shame in claiming to be part of the “glorious PC gaming master race” and finding keyboard mouse to be superior over dual analog for FPS's. I have a far easier time killing shit then I ever did in Borderlands 1 on my 360. Additionally, thank god Borderlands 2 does not use Gamespy Arcade on the PC like the first one did (I still have no idea why anyone ever used that piece of shit software). So far it seems like Borderlands 2 has a fairly easy setup for multiplayer. I have yet to try it but it seems as easy as Diablo 3's was for party set up and go. Upon entering the main menu, you can form up your party and choose your characters and when ready just enter the game. Like I said, I haven't actually tried it yet but it seems fairly simple and easy.

Crazy guns are still the norm for the game with plenty of different attributes. I haven't gotten anything as wacky as a sniper shotgun like I did in the first game but as stated I'm only in the beginning of the game. They did add a new type which are basically laser guns and they claim they're a bit on the rare side but I'd just call them uncommon drops compared to the other types. These are called “E-tech” weapons and are basically a mod on the guns so you can have E-tech version of any gun type. I have yet to find an E-tech rocket launcher but I imagine that'll be fun as hell. They claim these are made from modifications from the eridians, the aliens from the first game, technology hence the sci-fi laser approach.

On a similar note of eridian based things, eridium is a new form of currency in the game that lets you purchase upgrades for your character such as being able to hold more ammo types or add more backpack slots to hold more items. Again these are a bit on the uncommon side, I can find a few on each play through and upgrades are generally not super expensive, so it's a nice limiter on carrying capacity as opposed to the first game where you had piles of cash and could just upgrade these at will.

So far the game is solid but I have a few issues with it. I feel like so far some things are not very well explained and are glossed over. One of them is Badass ranks. You get these by accomplishing challenges, such things like getting 10 headshots or killing 50 guys with a shot gun or some silly things like that. These allow you to purchase stat boosts for ALL of your characters across your account. Everytime you redeem a rank you get a choice of a stat upgrade like gun damage, melee damage, reload speed, shield capacity, etc. that is small but can add up over time. What's nice is if you are worried about this ruining running a new character with a person who has never played before you can turn off the stats so you're not getting a large boost over your friend. I feel kind of whatever about this. Like I said it's not really well explained cause by the time I discovered this feature I had something like 15 badass ranks to redeem and I'd say since I've taken notice that I get maybe 2 or so every play session. It's possible I probably got a lot more in the beginning and it's slowed down a bit since then.

One other thing that I'm still attempting to understand are Golden Keys. You see in the middle of the hub city, Sanctuary, there is a chest which you open with these Golden Keys that gives you super rare loot. I’ve only been able to piece this together after finding a key and noticing it looked like an icon that popped up when I went to the chest and it asked me if I want to spend one of them. Oh yeah, I still have no idea where and how you get them. From what I’ve understood you get them during special event weekends or from Gearbox’s twitter feed or facebook where they’ll give out codes, which I guess you then redeem by assigning some thing called a SHiFT account to your game... or something. I honestly have no idea, it’s not explained in the slightest. In fact, my last play session I got 10 Golden Keys basically out of nowhere, no message, just here you go! The best explanation I found was that some people were saying that Gearbox sent everyone this batch due to some sort of bug fucking up some folks game (which they of course have patched) that happened recently. I seriously don’t know and it’s kind of annoying to be honest because I’ve learned this chest gives out loot appropriate to your level. Without knowing when I’ll be seeing more I don’t know if I should be using them now to grab a quick rare for my level or later when I’m max level and looking for my next best thing. It’s seriously perplexing. It’s cool that they have a system in place to hand out some rare loot for special events or something but they just don’t explain how this thing works in the game.

Despite somethings not being explained very well, I am having a blast with the game. Combat is solid and the sick and twisted humor is still there. I’m hoping to hear some other folks pick it up and give it a go sometime as I’d love to play with others.

I went ahead and picked this up while it was 50% off yesterday and I have a question for those who are playing it.

I never quite finished Borderlands 1.  I got pretty far, like into my 40s in levels, but I hit some brick wall I don't recall (probably something to do with having absolutely terrible luck with gun drops and not being able to fight foes anymore because of it).  This mean I still don't know what's actually in The Vault or any of the other final plot points (which must be where the only plot in the game happens because god knows none happend duringing the game itself).

My question is, should I learn what happens when you get to the vault before playing this?  Is that going to negatively impact my enjoyment of Boarderlands 2 if I don't know?

The intro to Borderlands 2 pretty well covers it, so no worries. It was nothing earth shattering. I was actually disappointed.

I think what I'll do sometime maybe is make an update to the character page that will allow for more effective tracking of my campaign progress on this.  In the mean time I'll just post it for now.

Current Progress: Level 19 Siren- Cataclysm Spec

Current Quest: Big Lights, Flying City
