Forewarning - I'm about to bitch about how this game has started frustrating me again.  If you don't feel like reading that, move along.

So, in an effort to decide if I wanted to risk Dragon Age II (which comes out next month) or not, I've tried playing Dragon Age:Origins again.  Just as a warning, I'm about to get mildly spoilerific here, but I'll try to keep it limited to places you go/quest objectives rather and not give away anything from the plot you can't learn by 2-3 hours in anyway.

The short version of how my previous attempts went was basically I loved the game from second one until my character arrived in Lothering.  Then Lothering felt like obnoxious quest after obnoxious quest with no real way to not lose relation with your party in the process, and just make me dread what the game would be like from that point on.  Chantry Board, I'm looking at you.  I also still don't really care for the relationship system in this game - if I wanted to play a dating sim I'd play a damn dating sim - but I've learned how to deal with it at this point.

This time I made it a point to enter Lothering, get what party members I could (for the first time I couldn't free Sten... odd... sad because I think he's dead now :( ), and GOT THE HELL OUT OF THERE. Fuck the Chantry Board, fuck doing any of the other quests there, just in, out, and get back to the plot before the game became a grind.

And for about a couple of weeks now that's worked... until now.  Getting out of Lothering was a great help - I've been working on the Redcliffe arc and found it fun and engaging and enjoyed all the different angles I could approach the issue of the Arl's son.  I ended up recruting the Circle of Magi to help me out with it, and so I have finished their quest line too, which was also fun.

However I've gotten to the point where now I have to find the Urn of Sacred Ashes, and I'm going to be honest, I fucking hate this part of the game.  It's to the point now where it feels like the game's AI is exploiting the flaws in the game's core mechanics on purpose to make the game absurdly hard for stupid reasons.  Here are some examples:

  • In case you did not know, Mages are OP in Dragon Age.  If you didn't know let me explain to to you like this:  If the enemy party contains 1 mage, just 1, and you DO NOT kill it MOMENTS after you find out the enemy party has a mage in it, You Lose. God help you if it has two mages mixed with melee defenders. There is almost no exception to this rule.  The good news is my two-handed sword wielding Grey Warden tears through a mage in about 2 to 4 hits, and reaching the sucker isn't that hard usually.  Still it's frustrating to know that the only counter to the damn things is to abandon any sense of strategy and recklessly kill them, regardless of how many foes you are running through to get to them.
  • Of course another part of the problem with "Mages are OP" is they have ABSURD CASTING RANGE so in the process of getting to them (at least in the level I'm in now), you will likely aggro a completely other group of guys that you cannot see until after you're in melee with the mage, and have aggroed them.  It doesn't help that the level I'm in also has this WONDERFUL habit of, and I'm not kidding here, SPAWNING ADDITIONAL MOBS MID FIGHT.  So you go into a fight, 4v4, to focus their mage, and going for the mage causes 7 dragonlings and drakes to appear in the midst of your back line.  Gee.  Thanks.
  • Also, for how much they praise the "tactics" of Dragon Age, it sure is a pain in the ass to enact any of said tactics when NONE OF YOUR CHARACTERS DO WHAT YOU TELL THEM TO WHEN YOU TELL THEM TO.  For example, oh gee, someone spawned behind my mage mid fight.  I'll pause the game, tell my mage to move.  What does she do?  Cast a spell I didn't tell her to cast, and then move, at which point she's been cc'd and will die before the CC wears out.
  • Again with the "tactics" it's also hard to enact tactics when you and your foes can literally push foes aside in an effort to get to their target.  This game needs D&D's Attacks of Opprotunity or Guild Wars' solid bodies like WoW needs to balancing. This gets even worse when I can have a guy who is 'base to base' with a foe get shoved aside mid attack by another foe going for someone behind him, have that attack connect, but then stop attacking because he's no longer in base to base, and just stand there until I give him to "Keep cutting that guy you idiot" command again.
  • Worst of all is one ability in particular:  Overwhelm.  It's this wonderful ability that only four-legged beasts and monsters can learn.  Essentially, the foe knocks your character to the ground, and proceeds to bite the hell out of them four times before letting them back up.  Okay that seems powerful enough but to make matters worse, effects that cause knock-down immunity DO NOT WORK AGAINST IT.  Further more, you cannot stop a foe who has used Overwhelm until after it's done, not even with a stun.  Apparently they wrote a patch at some point that made it so there literally is no wait to interrupt an in-progress overwhelm.  The guy who is knocked down can take no actions, and the casting time on it is non existant so there's no way to prevent it once it happens unless you have a healer on you who can, at that moment, heal the guy who is being overwhelmed so he/she does not die. So all of this is shit but the worst of it is that the game has no qualms with making you fight 2, 3, or sometimes even 7 enemies with this ability at once, against your party of 4.  It's like Needlefang drakes in D&D4 but worse.  So dumb.

I know the game is supposed to be 'tactical' and to them that means I should be pausing the action frequently to consider my next move, but when I foes have so many uninterruptable and uncounterable formes of CC that go off without the slightest telegraph and don't allow party members any means to rescue another character from or block the foe from using this ability on my weakest party members, how in the world am I supposed to beat these encounters and not suffer 1 to 3 party deaths per fight?  They don't give out or even sell me enough Health Potices or Injury kits to keep up with the rate of punishment this dunegon is giving out.  Just absurd.

I'm not sure if this post is representative of a surrender or not, but right now, I'm pretty damn mad at the game.

I didn't enjoy combat in the game. That and that people just look weird in it drove me from ever playing far into it at all, which is disappointing because I paid a lot of money for it.

So for what it is worth, you can pick this game of for free right now on Origin.  So if you've ever been curious about this title, now is as good a time as any to check it out.

Honestly I really enjoyed the "origin" chapters of the game.  The first couple of hours where your choices in character creation affect a lot of different things is great.  Once you get past that point though it is downhill for me.  That the game is free though means you still get the entertainment of the origin chapters for nothing.
