In case you'd not heard (I hadn't), version 1.9 went live recently. The change list is HUGE (you can read it all here), but here's the high lights:
  • You can now combine 2 two-handed weapons together, destroying one to add the manastone slots and bonus properties of it to the other. However, items improved in this way cannot be traded or stored in warehouses, not even in your account warehouse between characters.
  • There's now crit hit resistance stats, both in terms of resisting getting crit hit and resisting how much damage a crit causes.
  • Higher tiers of crafting and gathering are available. Some tiers of gathering now feature a level requirement (like you need to be 30 to hit gathering 200 now -_-)
  • Some things may now require items to be gathered - this sounds like something for a future expansion, but I'm not sure.
  • You can now buy a hat to help you detect resources that can be gathered on the minimap
  • You can now buy fluxes and aether from some vendors, though in limited quanity at a time.
  • There are now dailies for 30s and 40s
  • There's now PvP Attack and PvP Defense stats - I assume this work a bit like Resilience did in WoW (-_-)
  • There's now more generous rest systems in place, especially for level 15 and under
  • There's now a +healing stat
  • There's now an consumable you can use to increase the likely-hood of successful manastone equipping
  • "All stigma stones types can now be purchased from the Stigma Seller located in the large cities." I'm not entirely sure what that means.
  • Soul Healing, flight-travel, and soul binding are all cheaper
  • Bunch of titles got renamed.
  • LFG tool added
  • Your skill screen now only shows the strongest version of a given skill rather than filling it with lower rank ones
  • While you still don't get to know the exact level of enemy players, their names will now be colored to give you an idea. Red names are less than 10 levels greater or less than you, yellow names are 10 or more levels lower than you, while purple names are 10 or more levels higher than you. (^____^)
  • There's new skills for every class, pretty much late 40s stuff, including a pally bubble for the cleric.
  • Bunch of improvements to instances that effect instances I've never done so /shrug.
  • New quests have been added to in Eltnen, Theobomos, Heiron, Morheim, Brusthonin, Beluslan, and Reshanta.
  • They lowered the difficulty of some campaign quests.
  • Fortress become vulnerable after an hour instead of after 2.
  • Tons of new flight points, including THE GOD DAMNED OUTER DOCK IN SANCTUM ABOUT TIME YOU ASSHOLES

While I'm leery about some of these (I believe my hatred of WoW's resilience system is well documented), the addition of new quests, being able to tell if another player is level-skull to me, cheaper flights, more flight points, and some of the other systems might make me curious enough to poke at the game for another month and see if the patch improved the product enough. I'll let you all know how it goes if I do.

I'm sure most of you don't care anymore, but just as an FYI they're doing server mergers in Aion on July 7th. The breakdown for the mergers are:

New server: New Siel (West Coast) will be made up of: Siel & Ariel
New Server: New Vaizel Server (West Coast) : Vaizel, Kaisinel, Yustiel & Fregion
New Server: New Israphel Server (East Coast) : Israphel, Lumiel & Marchutan
New Server: New Zikel Server (East Coast) : Zikel, Triniel, Azphel & Meslamtaeda
New Server: New Nezekan Server (Oceanic): No Change

If this results in you having both Asmodian and Elyos characters on the new server, you have a period of time during which you can play both factions on a single server, and they will have unlimited free transfers for all players from July 8th to August 18th. At the end of both time periods if you STILL have both factions on one server they are going to make you choose one faction and the other faction's characters are not playable until you transfer them off server.

Again, I'm sure most of you don't care, but just in case you care a little bit, it might be worth it to sign on to your account management between 7-8 and 8-18 just to free transfer your Asmos and Elyos away from each other.

This moves up my personal time table to renew the game and give it another go. I think I want to get a feel for the game pre and post server merger. I remember when I logged back into WAR after there server mergers I was very disappointed by the communities all of my characters were now a part of. The life their servers once had was gone and in its place was a desolate life-less player area worse than trying to level in Duskwood on Cenarian Circle in the late days of Pre-BC. There was just no one around - no one to PQ with, and PvP Queues were awful. What that experience said to me was "It doesn't matter if I want to play WAR, WAR is over because not enough people play it anymore." This may well be indicative of what is about to happen to Aion, and if it is, that makes me sad-face. :(

If you want to read more about the server mergers, you can read the official FAQ.

Sadly I can't say I'm surprised. New MMOs just don't seem to have any lasting power. People just seem to use them for a break from WoW, then go back to it. Generic fantasy MMO with a twist just isn't catchy enough, I guess. Though things like Champions Online haven't really done much better so perhaps the setting doesn't matter much either.

Thanks to friendly "encouragement" from a co-worker my WoW account is active right now, and I can't figure out why people go back to the game so loyally. I don't care to go back to any of my old characters at this point. They're so far behind the progression curve that there's nothing for me to do. And leveling new characters is just as dull. I've done it all several times before so the only variation that really happens is getting griefed by high levels.

So if it isn't WoW's actual game play that is keeping people coming back to it I would guess that it is the community. The community for leveling has sucked for years, but the community at end game is still completely there. Everyone who has had an endgame raid or PvP group and kept in contact with them has a place. As for me, while I had raid groups I've been gone from the game for at least a year so most everyone didn't remember me when I popped on to my old characters. And my old roleplay group isn't really playing anymore either.

In short, damn people and their being too lazy to try and form new communities in new games!

Your post epitomizes why if I went back to WoW ever I'd rather start over, or at the very least server transfer. I've been a passive member in the end game communities of the game for so long I might as well not have level 80s anymore. Every time something happens to mechanically appeal to me in the game (like say "Ooo the Arthas fight looks bad-ass") I remember that despite owning 4 level 80 characters I do not have a home or a community with which to see any such end game content, and the work it'd take to get there at this point is just absurd. If I have to start over, why not start over with something that's still new ya know?

I dunno I can kind of see the reason why games like Aion and WAR ultimately faulter vs WoW because that End-Game scene never seems to be a part of the developer's plan before they launch, even in Aion's case where the game had been out for months in Korea before we saw it. Clearly end-game PvE is the glue that keeps an MMO alive past a certain point and if it's not there, it has issues. Of course, WoW's endgame PvE wasn't there either at launch so expecting their competitors to have that in place at launch is unfair to them too.

I still want to give Aion one more shake. WAR has issues that are detectable at the lower level, but for me the view of level 50 in Aion still holds promise that I would really like to taste before passing final judgement on the game, especially since instances really don't start showing up in earnest until the 40s. There may very well be a rewarding pvp and pve community in place in the game but you just gotta get there, and with the new quests in place, maybe that's possible.

And you know, while I'm being a WoW hater, let me also add in that this is what Guild Wars does right. Every year near the end of summer I go on a year long hiatus and every year near the beginning of summer I dive back into it. I am never punished for doing this, it doesn't hurt my progression curve because last year's content isn't rendered null and void by next year's content and I don't NEED to manage 40 people's flaming e-peen ego to get anything done in the game. Just sayin'.

And that's why I'm looking forward to Guild Wars 2! I'd also be willing to give Aion another go at some point with you.

Aion goes Free 2 Play February 2012. I think this is yet another "too late for me to care" kinda situation but I have to admit of all the things going F2P as of late, I will say that if monthly wasn't an issue I'd probably keep this installed so I can play it occasionally.

They have built an official page announcing that Aion will be going f2p sometime this spring.  To be honest my issues with the game were only enough to make me stop paying them a monthly, so with that gone I could see myself reinstalling and playing occasionally, at least until GW2 comes around and removes all need for any other online RPG from my hard drive.

I will say that while I was impressed by how much L2's F2P is really F2P (not the sort of nickle and dime you stuff Crypic tends to do), Lineage 2 is just... too old... for me to enjoy at this point.  Aion isn't.

Though any amount of Aion would probably still be secondary to getting shit done in GW1 right now too...

Anywho just making you all aware.

Oh man... it would take giant robots to make me even think about playing Aion again.   That said still, nah, but I thought I'd share this anyway.

Haha, giant robot girls. I wonder if they're worried about the entirely NSFW game of Queens Blade/Scarlet Blade.
