Ikaruga

  • Genre: other
  • ESRB Rating: E
  • Platform: DC
  • Max-Players: 2
  • Added on: 2011-08-21 by BountyHunterSAx

Description:

One of the most artistic bullet-hell shmups (top-down 'space-shooter') of all time. Of note, this game introduced a polarity system whereby all attacks are either black or white. You can switch your ship between these colors with the push of a button. You gain points and energy for absorbing like-colored bullets, but die in one hit to opposite colors. Allows for incredibly deep, challenging gameplay.

To those of you who haven't seen this game and want to see what it looks like, google some of the awesome vids :).

Or watch my run; I have a recording of lvl1 and 2 thusfar; though the 2 has no audio (which *really* kills it). Anyway, here's stage 1 :)

Good ol' Ikuraga. That's a game I haven't thought about in awhile! They should totally release that on a VC when they get around to GC/DC games.

Veeerrry nice 85 chain run of level 1!  I've not been able to pull that off before, impressed at what the score total looks like when you do.

Yeah you'll find most of us have played Ikaruga and are fans.  A few of us own it for Gamecube.

As for VC, I know Ikaruga has been on XBL for years.  I keep waffling back and forth on picking it up because I think the XBL version might be closer to the arcade version and includes random little things the gamecube version was missing.

So I've decided to try for another victorious run at Ikaruga. It's an awesome game and I've left it alone for far too long. More imporantly: I know I *can* beat it as I've done it twice... now it's time to do it again and try to record it.

Now if only all my skills hadn't degraded so damn much!

I've decided that I'm gonna throw some of my play vids up on my channel; linked below. Given the natural beauty of the game, I went for two separate recordings: one with and one without commentary. Enjoy!

(Administrator edit: you need to specify service on each video link for it to work.  Added the 2nd "yt:")

So just made a run at Ikaruga...and man I'm rusty. I managed to clear stage 1 (gained a life), and stage 2 (gained a life, lost a life). But then in stage three I managed to lose not one or two but a full three lives to the "jumprope" miniboss before the actual boss. Add in another death or two earlier on and I beat the boss with no lives left!

Part of me was gonna quit right then and there, but the other side realized that at 4:00AM, I wasn't exactly gonna try again. Win or Lose it had to be on this run.
I start running level 4 and man, I pull out reflexes even I didn't know I had. I manage to clear the whole level without dying once.  .. even earning an extra life at the end! Of course, when the boss has a near-invisible sliver of hp left, I manage to crash into him and kill myself. Still, that extra life means I made it to chapter 5 on one continue. Managed to beat the grid boss before dying to the "snake" boss.

Good Run.

I was reflecting on how much I love this game when I made my way over to TVTropes. There I discovered two things. Firslty, apparently there's a port of this game for the Android! How or why someone would do that I'm not sure, but i am curious. Second....

IKARUGA has been GREENLIT for Steam!!! OMG, a fresh excuse to start pushing myself for better scores and a 1cc (1-credit-completion) to trounce my old one! And with the undoubtedly superior leaderboard and multiplayer capabilities steam will bring! Sign me up :)

Ikaruga is out on Steam! It apparently has been for a few weeks. This version seems to have been adapted from the XBLA version. As of now, it does *not* allow for online co-op. . . which is such an obvious oversight I'd be astonished if it doesn't get fixed.

As long as you play under the 'default' continue settings (ie: no continues. New life after 300k points + every 500k after that) replays can be saved. Replays allow you to 'jump' to any chapter within that you're interested in watching. Also, all your 'high scores' in the list are saved here.

The cool new feature is that scores can only get to the online leaderboard by playing under those default settings  . . . so you can download *ANY* replay for any player in the high score lists. I cannot express enough just how welcome a feature this is.

ANYWAY -- i'm excited to post that I've got scores in the top 50 for Chapters I, II, and V on Easy.  In fact, I'm 20th place for Chapater V!! Very exciting ;).
