As I've discussed with others, I'll only be getting it if it sounds like a sizable number of people are as well.  At this point it does sound like Ren and Luri have already pre-ordered, and I heard from Misharum that he was going to jump on it as well, so with that I am also in.

Clearly saying you "own" the game on the database at this juncture is only pointing towards pre-orders.

So yeah, that's that.  I suppose at some point we'll have to co-ordinate playing with each other.  I'm less inclined to fuck around with doing a gameknights group for ourselves with this game as I am for Guild Wars 2, or at the very least I don't want to do the work to make it happen.

Either way, let us discuss the game as we see fit!

Personally I hope we don't end up playing Empire.  At first I thought the sith looked a lot cooler, but the more I hear about how the storylines are going to go, the less and less I am sure I want to play a Story-Based MMO's worth amount of time as an evil dick.

Then again, the Sith Fury is the best looking and coolest space ship available so at least there would be that.

You guys will have to let me know how it is. If it's pretty awesome I could give it shot.

So I've started watching the Timeline videos for Old Republic in order to familiarize myself with the lore of this particular time in the Star Wars history.  (In an odd bit, they've been doing them starting with the most recent and then building backwards... but once you get into watching them you see why).

Anyway the main reason I get into this is because one of the videos goes into length describing the Mandelorians and their history/culture.  Have two questions:

  1. Have the Mandelors always been sorta-rivals with the Jedi?
  2. Have the Mandelors always been the Spartans of the Star Wars Galaxy?  They seem to have the same cultural import on war and military gains, not because they are evil, but simply because they value strength?

I imagine Dominion would be the best to answer this but I thought I'd just throw it out there.

The whole Mandalorian race/culture/species/whatever-it-is has been a bit confusing to me. As far as I've gathered they're like you said, a bit Spartan in traditions and culture and they sorta don't see eye to eye with the Jedi. I really only know what has been exposed to me from the KotOR games since you usually interact with them there and can pick a Mandalorian up for your party. The thing I've never figured out is whether they're their own race or if they're just a culture. Looking up any info on it seems to indicate different writers have gone back and forth on this in different stories. You could attempt to decipher what you can from the Wookieepedia entry on them (warning, gigantic wall of text of info there).

The reason their story is so warped is because they're the fanwanked brainchild of a certain moron "Karen Traviss" who - after stating that the grand army of the republic numbered a paltry 6 Million (that's right - just 6 Million troopers to fight a GALACTIC scale war) - refused to retcon or modify that number.

The Mandalorians were tacked-on and fleshed out in the EU materials and then wanked up to these insane levels pretty much solely by this one author. Much of what she wrote about them has actually been overturned/ret-conned now thanks to the Clone Wars animated series (which is a higher level of cannon).

I am now a preorder whore as well. I don't particularly care which side I end up on in this one, which is rare for me. I have a tendency to like the "barbaric" faction in games like this cause I usually like the storyline better, which isn't really one side or the other in this case. There are classes that look interesting on both sides from what I've seen, and being able to do good/evil story lines on either side seems cool. I do think we should try to pick a side to main, and possibly review that choice after like a week or 2 in the game, so that we can switch if most of us hate that side before we get too high to do so. I'd also say that not worrying about levels of the characters or making a set of non mains to play together would be good, so that people don't have to worry about sticking at the same level with the main character they want to play.

Also... Space Marine.

Yeah this sounds mostly reasonable.  The more I read into the lore of the game and it's near Alternate-Universe Star Wars that I actually am starting to like, I feel less and less like I really want to play side X or Y or what not.  I also feel like there's stuff for me to play on either side.

If the game came out today my main would be either a Jedi Knight or Sith Warrior, depending on side.  Given some more time to think about it though I'd like to consider Jedi Councilor/Sith Inquisitor.  Really I like the hybrid potential of the Councilor/Inquisitor, and the Sith Assassin does seem appealing, but I also have noticed that as of late I have a tendency to develop plate-mail-envy when I'm not playing the class in heavy armor, which is why if it came out today I'd just grab the heavy-armor-light-saber-dude.  On Republic side I'd also be willing to try Trooper sometime and on the Empire I might look into Imperial Agent because it looks like they might have a sniper build that might be fun - maybe.

In terms of the mains/alt/what not, I do think that without a doubt we should play on the same server and faction with our mains.  I also think that if we don't try to keep our mains near each other, then we should establish a group of characters that are dedicated to playing with each other.  In other words, perhaps I main a Sith Warrior but roll a Sith Inquisitor specifically to play with the 3 of us. That said I do worry that might eventually run into issues - specifically that if we find out we like our group alt more than our main.  I dunno what's other thoughts on that?

There's also the fact that I'm kind of watching to see what Luri and Ren's group end up doing.  I'll probably push for us to follow them somewhat on Faction/Server so I don't need to spread myself out to play with them too.

For those of you keeping track, I have applied to Luri's Stuff Incorporated SWTOR guild.  It's a Republic guild, shooting for a PvE server. I'm not saying that we have to join it for our hijinks, but I will be rolling what I will probably consider my main there.  No server declaration there yet, but I'll let you know when I see it.

I also know that Bruce is making a Sith guild with some of his old WoW Friends.  I'll drop a link to that too when I'm at home and I can grab the link again.
