So reviews are coming mixed.  Some (e.g. Escapist) are saying the game is at the end of the day average, and ultimately disappointing.  Others (e.g. Joystiq) are saying once you get past the boring story you are left with a competent first person dungeon crawler that's good with up to two other friends. Edit Add Polygon's take on the game being full of potential that is never realized.

The Joystiq review is the one that I think will match my fancy most, because it reminds me of how I played PSO.  That game had a terribly light story, and in the end I just ended up filling in the blanks myself while playing and I think that was part of my fun with it.  Either way though I played it for how much fun I had running the same places over and over again because for some reason it didn't feel too repetitive for years. I guess because there was so much finesse with the combat.  Given how no firefight in Halo ever seems to go the exact same for me I think Destiny has the same potential.

So I am definitely still interested in this game - I think it would be a great thing if a couple of us pick it up.  That said though I do feel like since I missed the starting gun on the console version I'd like to continue wait for:

  1. Me to actually want a PS4
  2. It to come out on PC

That said, according to the Playstation Store, if you buy the digital version of Destiny for PS3, you get the PS4 version as well, so there is that.   So I guess if any of you do decide you want to take the plunge let me know and I might come with.  Otherwise I think I'm going to set that cash aside for Civilization:Beyond Earth.

I'd really like to give the game a try. But I'm kinda on the same wavelength as you Vergil, I'd rather have it on the PC and who knows how long it'll take before that comes out. My only option at this point is getting it for the 360 but console FPS controls plus needing to re-up my subscription to LIVE for multi-player makes me very hesitant on that front. I'm also still not really interested in getting a next gen console at the moment so.... yeah. Blargh. Should've just came out on the PC, damn you Bungie.

And then two guys beat the hardest content in the game, a "raid" that is supposed to require two 3-man teams to beat, with just the two of them.  Video evidence attached.

Edit: Apparently at some point they have to stop the run and get a third person because one of the doors doesn't open for less than 3 players.  An arbitrary blockage to what had been up until that point a successful two-player run with only 1 wipe.  After that part their third player leaves and they resume the run with just the 2 of them.

I have this now for XBOX 360 due to Christmas gifts.  If anyone else picks it up let me know.

It looks like Spot18 and Steinst2 were playing at one point but have stopped now.  Also they were playing on XBOX ONE so...

As you may have heard, Destiny is dropping Peter Dinklage. This isn't just "he's not doing voice work for us anymore" it's "We are replacing all of his lines in the game with Noland North."   This is what today's Penny Arcade is about:

I honestly don't think this will help much.  I think that "dinkle-bot's" performance has more to do with how shitty the writing in Destiny is in general.  North may be able to liven up the few scenes I think Dinklage phoned in a bit much but overall I hope it highlights to everyone who hasn't noticed yet how overwrought the writing in this game is.

EDIT: Actually in even bigger news Destiny is going to re-evaluate it's level up system!

So they're replacing "Dinklebot".  All the Peter Dinklage lines are being replaced in Destiny.  Enough complaints about his performance and I'm sure he's not cheap so when it came time to do more story mode for the expansion they probably saw an opportunity to grab a new actor.

Now I'm by no means in love with "Dinklebot" but I always felt the issue with your ghost's performance in that game had less to do with Dinklage and more to do with the damn script and terrible direction.  You know, the problem everyone'sperformance has in Destiny. The whole damn thing wreaks of self-important narrative without the substance to back it up, and Dinklebot is just another symptom of that problem.

So they're replacing him with Nolan North, because I guess when a TV actor doesn't work out, get one of the two guys who are in every video game (Because when it's not Nolan North it's Troy Baker).  Here's a video comparing the two.  Honestly, I don't think its an improvement.  They are fixing some problems (Dinklebot's dry delivery around mysteries and wonder) while creating new ones (being over enthusiastic around mysteries and not worried enough about danger).   "Nolandroid" may only help point out that Dinklebot had nuance to his performance, that is to say he's dry most of the time so that when he isn't it's pointed, memorable, etc.

I dunno take or leave it.

Yeah, I don't see much of an improvement. Some areas it's slightly better while being worse in others. I couldn't quite figure it out when watching a similar comparison video but I think you're right, the mysteries are delivered better by Nolan but any danger moments he doesn't seem as worried as Dinklage. Watched this comparison video the other day. Honestly, I think I prefer Dinklage but neither helps the overall dialogue issue.

I feel like that video is kinder to Nolandroid.
