So, while clearing an early Act I quest I noticed an interesting 'glitch'? If you skip a miniboss and hit a checkpoint, then when you reload from that checkpoint the boss will be respawned each time. Pretty basic, right?

But that got me to thinking. I've been trying to get Malthiel's legendary drop for a while, but tavelling to him each time takes a while. So what I did was hit the checkpoint before him, but then promptly hit 'leave game' the *moment* his loot drops. There's about a 2-3 second window in which his death animation doesn't complete - - - so you don't get credit for "killing malthiel" and yet the drops have happened.

And that gave me another idea: what part of malthiel's death resets the guaranteed legendary drop? What if you can game Malthiel by hitting that 'sweet-spot' on your first-kill of him. . . but not letting it register as the kill, just snagging the loot?

*EDIT* Whether or not this would have worked, all aspects of this glitch have since been patched out of the game. Literally within two days of my noting it. I'm giving *MASSIVE* props to the Blizzard team here for being so on their game.

I've been wanting to speedrun D3 properly (ie: ignoring elites, playing on 'normal' etc.), including the new Act V - so this was as good an excuse as any:

ACT I: 34 minutes
ACT II: 28 minutes [1legend drop]
ACT III: 22 minutes
ACT IV: 9 minutes, [1 legend drop]
Act V: 31 minutes [x3 legend drop (on malth)]

tl;dr - 5 legends in ~120 minutes.

The problem? Right as I got to the end I was so excited to see a triple legendary drop that I *forgot* to test my theory! So....*yeaaaaaah*....gonna have to do this thing again.

Still, one legend per hour is a fairly solid rate, IMO. One guaranteed every two hours, and one by luck in the same vein? I think this might just be something to try again sometime.

*FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCCCCCCK!*

Level 70 crafted sets no longer require Flawless Royal gems and instead now require Marquise gems

Over 20 million gold and 160 Marquis gems...wasted. God. Damn.

Still, I guess I'm glad they fixed it instead of leaving the outrageous cost outrageously high. Time to go and craft me-self loads and loads of cain sets till i get something good.

-AHMAD

*EDIT* Thirty minutes, ten maghda runs, four essence drops, and 3 sucessful craft-improvements later. This is so liberating.

*short version*: I came up with another build for my Demon Hunter. It works awesomely well. I love that D3 caters to this sort of creativity on my part without sacrificing the core "kill stuff, get better loot, kill more stuff" gameplay in the process.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

*actual version*:

So, Misharum and I were playing some D3 yesterday and noted a difference in our playstyles. As many of you know I pretty much exclusively play DemonHunter, but I revel in doing oddball and 'cool' things with her. Coming up with alternative builds and new ways to rock out tons of damage. Whereas Misharum's preference is to *not* do that. To instead, kill more mans and get moar stuffs. And yet the game wonderfully scratches both those itches, which is cool.

Yesterday, while looking over my legendary items I saw the magefist effect: +~15-20% damage to fire attacks. My current build is about funneling hatred into fan-of-knives spam. So even with the fire-trail and the fire-chains damage of two of my attacks, i was seeing almost no gain from this effect. Okay, no big deal. But then I remembered a legendary I picked up at XL:60 -- the Kridershot. It converts a 10-hatred-user spell into a 3-hatred-gainer spell. And that spell is Elemental Arrow (so, obviously fire-runeable).

From there the wheels started turning. Switch out Fan of Knives for Cluster Arrow -- 750+% weapon damage as fire, followed by 4x220% wpn grenade damage in fire.  Slot in another item or two to further supplement elemental arrow and cluster arrow damage. . . maybe another fire+ if I could find it? The legendary list quickly revealed a must-have item for the set: "cindercoat" which reduces the resource cost of your fire spells!

Imagine my excitement, then, that running with Misharum yesterday the Kridershot dropped! Not only the Kridershot, but a superior Magefist (which he was generous enough to trade along). Combined with a Stone of Jordan I forgot I'd had (+20% fire damage) and a suitable quiver (+15% element arrow). I had enough to test the build.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Holy *SHIT* is this thing powerful! My auto-attacks are only marginally less powerful than my fan-of-knives attacks used to be. THey have a 40% chance to fear on hit, which is wonderful defense/control. And my hatred-spender . .. while a gas-guzzler . . . tends to crit for anywhere from 4 to 11 million damage O_O. If I could get the Cindercoat running with this, it'd be *INSANE*. And what I sacrifice in mobility (no infinite roll :( ) I gain in range. A suitable trade.

The fact that just a single legendary item (Kridershot) can so drastically change the way I play the game. That Diablo 3 can allow for "building around it" almost the way you can construct entire Magic decks to deal with one or two cards is just glorious to me. I know it can't last forever; but it is definitely part of what is giving D3 it's current staying power for me. That and kill-loot-slaughter :).

So, two major new features have been released that I like and one that I disliked but, mercifully, is unimportant.

Bad: Seasons. From now on, every year, you can roll a brand new character with no access to previous abilities/items who is your season character. You also may only play with him with other seasonal characters. This is for leaderboard reasons, but also grants you access to "Season-only" legendaries. When the season is over:
1.) Your season-only character now becomes just like any other character in your character list.
2.) Season-only legendaries become just like any other legendaries.

In short - think leaderboards and seasonal characters are as dumb stupid as I do? Then don't play them. It literally does not have to affect you even a little.

Good Feature: Greater Rifts! -- So, ya'know how there are rifts? Well when you complete a rift you can now get a Greater-Rift key. After a brief trial, you enter the greater rift. . . which is harder. There is no loot until you kill the boss. There's a 15minute timer on it as well, so killing enemies to fill up the percentage *ALWAYS* feels like a fun, thrilling race against the clock.
And then, when you kill the boss? *ALL* the loot you would have gotten and picked up along the way shows up when you pop the boss. It's an infantile pleasure, I admit, but watching a literal *deluge* of gold, 2-4 legends, and gems shower down on you is about as nice a high as it gets.

Good Feature: Legendary Gems and Greater Riftsx2: So you've completed a Greater Rift. You get your rewards. Among them are 'Legendary Gems'. Socketable gems that grant some truly obscenely cool effects but can only be socketed in ring/amulet slots. THey cannot be upgraded the usual way. Instead, now that you've cleared the rift:
Option ONE: You may upgrade your GRift keystone to the next tier for a HARDER rift with MOAR killing/loot.
Option TWO: You may 'cash out' and upgrade a legendary gem. Note that this is only a %-success chance. The higher the level of the rift you cleared the more likely to succeed. So a Level 1 legend gem coming out of a Level 8 Grift is "+7" and therefore, guaranteed to succeed. A level 20 gem coming out of a Level 8 Grift is -12. . . and i'm pretty sure that's a guaranteed failure. Better Grift more to get that gem up ;)!

Would love to run some GRifts with the Torment-capable Game Knighters at some point just for funsies. I don't see myself investing the time to level a legend gem up to 25 . . . that's gonna take literally HUNDREDS of GRift clears if my back-of-the-envelope math is correct. But GRifting is rewarding in and of itself and I'd enjoy doing that with company.

So, Diablo 3 Season 3 starts on Friday. For those of you who don't know, a season is a period of a few months where characters created for it all start from level 1 with no access to your regular characters loot, money, paragon levels, etc. At the end of the season it becomes a regular character with all that entails. You can read more here.

Anyway, is anyone interested in playing the season together?

Should bug Shieke about it if you end up doing it, she was doing it a bunch with a WoW friend of hers. She'd probably be willing to do some playing with folks. I feel kinda "meh" on it.

I think each season I've started a Crusader and then forgot about it.  I play D3 still, but in very quick fits and bursts, not the kind of continous play that you need to do to get something out of a season character.

I dunno let me know if this becomes a thing, maybe I'll whip up another crusader or try a demon hunter.

I enjoy D3's end game far too much to really get into its early or mid game, unfortunately. I mean, I *could* roll a character just for the sake of playing with the crew, but either I'd get into a mood to improve it (and thus powerlevel/farm it into insanity) or I'd make a subpar character and get bored with it quickly, then be at the wrong level when we played together.

What I'll probably do is - if we end up having a group for this kind of thing - I'll just make a new character and find someone to powerlevel him up to "just right" for when we all play together.

Even on a seasonal, you *DO* retain access to Adventure Mode and Rifts (IIRC), provided you've unlocked those. So you wont have to re-re-re-re-re-beat the campaign (or just re-re-beat it in some folks' case).

Ahmad and I discovered that my wizard can survive in Torment 6 while running the anniversary cow level, but actually killing things wasn't going that well for me. But a couple set items dropped for me while we were in the cow level which combined with others in the bank and increased my damage by 100,000 on the sheet (and by a lot more in effect due to the set bonus and skill setup). So after Ahmad signed out for the night I decided to just walk out of New Tristram and see how far into Act 1 I could get. Turns out all the way through it. I died a few times and it wasn't fast, but I could do it!

OMFG Blizzard So-Excite Happy Cannot Contain Whoop!

OK, let's try this again.

Apparently, in the next patch Blizzard is doing the following awesome thing:
1.) No more Grift Keystones/ Rift Keystones/ Keystone Trials. Instead, you just go to a drop down menu and say "play a grift" and choose ANY LEVEL YOU WANT that you have previously beaten. Fucking. Awesome.

2.) Affix-Harvesting.
Apparently there's a new crafter -- something about Kunai's Cube. This guy will let you do several things but most important among them:

-> ReRoll any legendary so that it's as if it re-dropped. With a chance to become ancient, get the right mix of stats, etc.
-> Destroy a legendary to pull off the 'legendary affix' and keep it stored in your..umm..storage...thingy. You can then equip that affix so that it's avialable to you on a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT WEAPON! You can do this for a weapon, an armour, and a jewlery simultaneously. And guys? HELLFIRE AMULETS ARE JEWLERY!!!! O_O! OMFG DemonHunterJOYGASM incoming!
-> Turn set items into other members of the set. Less interesting, admittedly. But if you're not as lucky as I've been with set-drops, this is a great way to complete a set with your 5th/6th/7th 'pants'.

3.) Making GRifts fun.
They've *FINALLY* decided to "reduce significantly" the damage of higher tier GRIFT enemies (ie: Grift level 25 and up) and improve uber-high tier (ie: GRift 42 and up) loot drops.

Lots of other QoL and sundry changes but yeah. Expect me to be doing a bunch of D3 when this patch hits and/or next season rolls around.
