So this week (Friday I think) NAMCO BANDAI announced a new Dragon Ball fighting game.  At first that's an "eh okay, but get this":

  • 2.5D engine instead of a full 3D fighter
  • 3 v 3 team fighter (think Marvel vs Capcom or Skullgirls)
  • DEVELOPED BY ARC SYSTEM WORKS (Guilty Gear, BlazBlue, Persona4 Arena)

Read about the announcement here.

Listen, I'm excited new any time Arc Systems makes a new fighting game, but that they are getting the Dragon Ball licence and putting it in the Guilty Gear Xrd Engine?!?!?!

If you have not seen any of Guilty Gear Xrd in action, go watch some gameplay.  I still don't enjoy playing Guilty Gear as much as BlazBlue (I miss the drives and like the BlazBlue cast more), but the Xrd engine is off the chain.  It is solid for playing in and it does a fanastic job of honoring the anime-design origins of its franchise while bringing them into 3D.

And while there has been no shortage of Dragon Ball fighting games, what I've seen of them tends not to inspire me to want to play them.  Xenoverse seems interesting because it lets you create your own character and customize their moves, but the fighting systems still seemed weird to me.  Having a team that has made a bunch of solid fighting games in the past making a Dragon Ball game could be tiiigggghhhhtttt as hell.  Hey, they might even make it fun and balanced so the highest tier characters aren't just the Super Sayians and the villains.

Anyway, we're looking at 2018 for this but I'm still stoked!

Actual gameplay footage.  In Japanese.  Recommend skipping to about 2 minutes in.  Don't worry the action picks up.

Definitely a 3v3 Marvel style fighter.  Definitely hype.

I still suck at fighting games so my hype level is probably not as high as others. Still, the presentation alone in this game is amazing after just watching those few videos. Might not be day one purchase but I may pick it up eventually. Arc System knows how to do shit right.

This will probably be more technical than most folks here want, but Maximilian_d00d got his hands on Dragonball Fighter Z and gave his impressions of the game during E3 2017.  A lot of this sounds familiar to be as a BlazBlue fan with a small touch of Guilty Gear added on where it makes sense for Dragon Ball stuff.

A Japanese Twitter user made these comparisons between frames of animation from the game and the manga.  Great stuff.

Oh man, I'm reminded of how much I do not like the Japanese voice actors. I really hope they also get the English voice actors from whichever dub it was that Toonami got. Or better yet, get Team Four Star to do it!

Honestly after 80 episodes of Dragonball Super I'm beginning to prefer the Japanese voice cast.

That said, given that Dragonball Xenoverse has the English voice cast, I have to imagine that Dragonball Fighter Z will have them on hand as well.  And yeah if they did make DBZA voice pack DLC or something, I'd buy it.

Now that E3 is over and I'm news will wind down, I'm still happy to hear that it sounds like this game has a "Simple to learn, but with depth" approach to the design.  Already during the time E3 was happening folks thought they'd figured out the game's simple 3-normals + Special buttons and similar combo structure between the characters, but even as E3 was ending some of the higher level fighting game players trying the game out were finding out ways to extend/abuse/manipulate that system.    That means that I think the game will probably still be harder to get into than say, Smash Bros, but easier than BlazBlue/Guilty Gear.  I think that will help get a lot of DBZ fans into it, and thus build a healthy playerbase.

Again, one of the announcements from E3 2017 I'm most excited about, after all is said and done.
