On April 29th, E:D ran a story event where a controversial NPC CMDR known as "Salomé" was going to reveal to everyone a message regarding a potential galactic conspiracy regarding the Aliens.   I'm still parsing the details of this story, but it appears she was in the game, possibly played by a dev, and was making her way somewhere and if she made it, then her message would be delivered, otherwise it might be lost.

I'm still piecing together the details but it sounds like the E:D Community on both XBOX ONE and PC recognized that without an organized escort effort there was no way she was going to make it.  On XBOX, the community managed to escort her successfully to her destination.  On PC however, some group (one I'm not familiar with) that was supposed to help protect her went turn coat and killed her near the end of the run.    While there's been no official dev response yet, the author E:D is contracting with to write lore, who recently wrote a book about Salomé, said something to the effect of "Her message was not delivered and thus is now lost."

What all that means yet is not clear.  XBOX users didn't see/hear the message themselves, FDev hasn't made an official statement yet, and its not clear if her living or dying really matters in the long run, just alters the details of the story.

I find that FDev tried to do something like this interesting even if it perhaps blew up in their face a little.  We'll see how they react to what happened in the future, and if I find a better summary of the events I'll share it here.

Ars Technica actually did a solid write up of the event.  Here's a clarification on some of the things I misunderstood/got wrong.

  • The event was more the idea of Elite:Dangerous Novelist, Drew Wagar, than FDev, though FDev did help him orchestrate the event.  The point was that he wanted the player base to have a chance to shape an important moment in his upcoming novel and to help do this he was the one controlling CMDR Salome during the event.
  • Ergo the outcome doesn't really have effect on E:D the game so to speak, though Wagar's novels have gone hand in hand with the game's lore so far, so it's fair to say Salome is dead in both cases.   What effect that will actually have on the game... shrug?
  • To simply say "the defenders got betrayed" shortcuts how elaborate the ruse actually was.
    • The trolls in question in this case are members of a group called the Smiling Dog Crew (hereafter SDC). You can learn more about SDC's history here, but suffice to say it's been a checked one of controversy.   As someone who favors PvE in Elite I don't care for their end goals, but the time they got FDev to fix some really bad PvP issues by exploiting them like hell probably helped everyone in the end.
    • In any case, SDC managed to join a Coalition of players who were supposed to protect Salome.  Said Coalition let the SDC in basically saying "if this is going to boil down to one giant PvP event, we want the biggest PvP jerks in the game on our side not the other."  They should have probably recalled that SDC ran a charity stream alongside the infamous CODE pirates in the past and though better of that plan, but hey, hindsight is always 20/20.
    • The killing blow on Salome was also delivered by CMDR Harry Potter who already has a reputation for stream sniping Charity Streamers and generally being an ass.
    • It also sounds like to some extent the Coalition itself was acting in mean ways to others.  They issues a "Kill ON Sight" order to any players who weren't in the Coalition who entered space on Salome's path AND kicked any member of the Coalition who happened to be Russian from the Discord and membership on the grounds of "they were likely pirates."
    • It also sounds like - surprise surprise - the same instancing issues that Elite:Dangerous has always had with large scale player events reared their head, resulting in player groups having problems getting fair/organized fights with the game arbitrarily splitting up wings when ships jump into the same signal source.   This may have given the assailants the unfair advantage they needed to win the day even if CMDR Harry Potter hadn't executed his betrayl.
  • We're still waiting for official word from FDev or the Author in an elaborate statement.

Generally speaking though if you're looking for more info on this I cannot recommend the Ars Technica write up enough.  I think their labeling this a "Near-EVE-worthy troll" is fair.  Elite obviously lacks anything like PLEX that lets you assign real-world $$$ to ships lost, nor is Elite honestly an MMO so it doesn't operate at the same scales.  By the same token the fact that Elite isn't an MMO and it is so hard to make organized activities happen makes it all the more impressive when they do happen despite the game itself.   Interesting outcomes.

Elite held another "Ctrl+Alt+Space" video contest after releasing the updated camera tech in their last patch.  This live stream goes over all the winners from the contest.  It's long to watch all of them ( you can totally skip to 11minutes in IMO), but there are some solid entries here.  Some of the entries are very good, one of the runners up was one I shared earlier as "a better trailer for Elite:Dangerous than any they officially made."

They ultimately went with one that ended up being a player's farewell for his mother.   If you don't want to watch the live stream, I've attached my top five.

  1. Stardust - the winner
  2. Trailer - again I think a better ad for Elite than any of the official ones.  This is actually my favorite.
  3. Laser Cops - this is hilarious.
  4. Frame Shift - Someone brave enough to mix some live action acting and costumes with gameplay for this contest.  Not half bad.
  5. Stickybee - neat mix of animation and machinima.

And here we go.  E3 2017 Frontier confirms the next patch will be all about the Thargoids (named now, not longer player theory) returning.

Looks like this whole alien thing is finally coming to a head this month.

Well it's only been about...

*looks back in thread*

Jebus 8 months. I'm curious to see if they make them an interesting interaction. Might boot up the game again if so.

First Thargoids down confirmed.   Sounds like:

  1. Killing a Thargoid is not a solo activity.  You'll need a Wing, maybe two.
  2. You'll need anti-alien weapons.  Some of which may need to be acquired from a planetary base, requiring Horizons in order to experience.

Here's more information from ObsidianAnt.

So the aliens thing happened.  I still haven't signed into this game.  Apparently though the Thargoids have attacked a Space Station. This gallery shows the results.  I think its super neat to see this and, if I'm honestly, if one of my old haunts had this happen to it I might log in just to run them some supplies.

Really hoping there's more to it then just bringing supplies. I hope Thargoids are actually attacking stations and I could get caught in the crossfire.
