Couple of fun things I stumbled across today. One, the official Guild Wars 2 twitter account retweeted this so I'd say it's pretty reliable, though keep in mind this is all still beta. A skill tool webpage (yes it's French but you can switch it to the English setting) to play with builds and weapon sets! Just seeing all these skills on paper makes every class have some fun abilities and look like there's something I could enjoy on every class. I'm continue to be super excited about playing an engineer though.

I also found this image (kind of a big image, hence I didn't insert it here) that gives a brief run down on weapon sets and what playstyle and types of abilities you'd get with each weapon. Nice quick overview of what you can expect with each weapon set.

EDIT: Sword + Pistol mesmer. A sword and gun illusionist. I may have to try this.

I've been looking at this all week but didn't share, but there's also the Guild Wars 2 Wiki which is finally filling up with lots of data, including skill listings for every class:

I am actually glad I've started looking into this stuff because it is giving me a better sense for what I can expect some of the classes to do in the actual game.  I too was peaking at the Mesmer stuff and thought "WOW!  A lot of the greatsword and sword stuff looks a lot of fun!  Plus I've always dug the idea of a spellcaster who used a sword, even if it was just as the implement for their spells."  So I also might be considering Mesmer when the game comes out.

I'm also glad I was looking up the thief stuff.  The way they have been showing off pistol and bow use made me worry that they were not really going to be the successor to Assassin I would hope they would be.  Taking a closer look at their double-dagger build, there's a lot there in common with what I currently run (or like to run) with as Assassin, so that's encouraging.

Bold words from Eric Flannum were dropped at Guild Wars 2 Guru regarding the trait system and how it relates to the "Trinity" (quotes here are from the GuildWarsInsider summary available here).

Players could make a build that resembles the trinity but it could never truly be the trinity. You cannot for example make a dedicated healer no matter how much you pump into your support trait lines. When you start getting to tougher encounters no matter how much armor and health you have you will never be able to stand toe to toe for long against most of the foes you’ll face. Because of this even a 5 person group that has 3 dps focused characters, a support focused character, and a damage soaking character (which is a standard trinity setup) will not play anything like a standard trinity group. If those players insisted on playing like a standard trinity group they could succeed against the easier content in the game but probably couldn’t finish a story mode dungeon let alone an explorable dungeon or some of the tougher events in the game.

He then goes into more detail:

To go a little bit more in depth with the answer I gave, it doesn’t really matter which professions you bring. Over the beta weekend I played through the dungeon with several different journalists and getting through was never a matter of bringing particular professions or even changing the builds that people were using. When we hit a tough patch people would change which weapons or utilities they were using but nobody ever had to go respec their traits. I was in groups that wiped multiple times in story mode but I was also in groups that  did not wipe at all in story mode and was in one group that made it through explorable mode (we wiped a lot in that one). It all came down to how well we coordinated and how well we responded to the situations we encountered.

For example, in the explorable run through I think it was two journalists who were both warriors (one may have been a guardian, I’m having trouble recalling), our producer Chris Whiteside with a ranger, Izzy playing an elementalist, and myself playing an engineer. At different times Izzy was our condition removal guy, our debuffer, and our “tank” (bait is a more appropriate term actually). He was our most important player because he was our best player but he was actually very support/healing specced. The important thing about that group was that we were all talking and coordinating our efforts and coming up with strategies together. Those strategies never really revolved around specific skills but rather things like “We need condition removal” or “we need to stack as much vulnerability on this guy as possible” or even “we need Izzy to run around attracting attention while the rest of us activate the traps built into the area to kill the hordes of incoming mobs”. I hope that helps shed some light on how the game plays.

So yeah hopefully this will quell some of your concerns about the Trait system, I know it helped with mine a bit. So long as this doesn't turn into any class being shoehorned into needing to be a certain trait build I have no issues with the system.    I like the idea of playing an Elementalist and being in a party with another Elementalist, one of us is set up for Fire and Air Traits while the other is Water and Earth Traits, and both of us are valuable to our team because we're good Guild Wars 2 players, not because of some exclusive spell or ability that is unique to our traits.

And now you can pre-order the damn thing FINALLY.

Of course a pre-order means Beta Access.  You can order the pre-order the collector's edition now, and the other editions are available for pre-order April 10th.

That April 10th date has gained a sudden weight with me.  Also I imagine myself buying the collector's on this or if not the Digital Deluxe.  I will want the sound track when all is said and done.

EDIT UPDATE: My bad, you cannot pre order any edition until April 10th.  They just wanted to tell us about it today and the Collector's edition button is just for more info.

I'll certainly be pre-ordering, not sure what version there. Collector's Edition looks awesome.

I do not think it is coincidence that you will (finally) be able to preorder once PAX East is over.

Ooh, good point Steph. Anyway, Arena.net has been the biggest bunch of cockteases the past couple days. Yesterday they shot out that email that made me go "BETA INVITE!?" before I read it, then that same email had a link to a video I couldn't watch since i don't bookface, and now this today. Geeze!

According to Guild Wars 2 twitter

We will not be at PAX East, we are busy working on the game.

Might as well cancel the PAX trip.
