I have 3 characters already in mind to play.......oddly enough, one of them isn't Norn.  Can't wait to see the Sylvari stuff, and what the final 2 professions are.  Yarrrrr waiting makes me angsty.

NEW CLASS ANNOUNCED:  The Engineer

So!  It sounds like some of the work the Guild Wars 2 team did to joke about the Commando for April fools was actually a clever ruse to distract us from the posibility that something like that might actually be a class.  The resulting actual class is the Engineer.

Now, that's not to say The Engineer is a time-traveling modern day soldier with modern weapons, because he/she isn't.  However, those of you who played the April Fools Commando in Guild Wars 1 may recall that a big part of the class was proper management of skills that represented various grenades and other pieces of equipment.  That's kinda what the Engineer is about.

The Engineer is our third (and final) adventurer class, wearing medium armor and is only able to equip pistols, shields and rifles. The Engineer is the second class that cannot equip a 2nd weapon set (the Elementalist was the first) - Instead the Engineer has access to healing and utility skills (think slot 6 then slot 7-9 of your skill bar) that provide the flexibility that extra weapon sets would.  These skills come in the form of kits.  Some kits replace the Engineer's current weapon with a new one, like a flamethrower.  Other kits cause you to equip a backpack full of gadgets, like bomb packs.  Other kits deploy turrets which defend a fixed point and can be over-charged by the player, or picked back up and moved (though there is a cooldown before they can be placed again). Finally the Engineer gets a "tool belt" that acts as another set of skills above their normal weapon skill bar based on what kits are currently in use.  They give the example of equipping a medkit to add a self-healing skill to the tool belt.

Thus far the Engineer feels the most difficult to understand when just reading about it so far.  Clearly it bears strong resemblance to FPS mainstays like TF2's Engineer or MNC Support who are kings of fortifying fixed positions. However how exactly these kits and the toolbelt work in practice is a bit enigmatic to me, and I'm not sure it'll make sense until we see video of the Engineer in action.

That said, I think it's great that Arena.net went outside of normal RPGs for the inspiration of one of their classes as well.  I think the Engineer could make Guild Wars 2 appealing to a completely different kind of player than the classes provided so far.  I also think it's great to see a purely ranged based class, especially one that can use guns (rangers are entirely bow based).

I will admit I am a little concerned by the Engineer however.  For one, I can already hear the forum nubs and elitist jerks who are going to start comparing Engineers and Rangers and complaining about one being able to outpace the other in DPS rather than thinking of the classes as unique.  Additionally, I've only seen this kind of stationary-defense game play done in an MMO before in one place:  Warhammer Online, and while the Dwarf Engineer and Chaos Sorcerer were never the worst classes in the game, they were generally unfavored compared to pure BURST ranged DPS (Dark Elf Sorceress/Human Bright Wizard) or ranged DPS with a mobile pet (Goblin Squiggherder).   I think Arena.net is going to have an interesting time making sure Ranger and Engineer players don't get frustrated because their class can't measure up to the other in some way (according to perception), though I will admit that Arena.net is one developer I think could find a way to make this work out in the end.

So, 1 class left, that we know has to be a "Scholar," light armored class.  I think the possibility of Mesmer is still very high on that one.

Pistols? Bombs? Flamethrower!? Using steampunk technology? Yeah I'm rolling this, end of story.

Not only that but the whole "Rifles plus gadgets" thing reminded me a lot of your old Dwarf Hunter in WoW, Rokov.  Yeah I know "Engineer" was a crafting profession and not a class in that game, but for a while in vanilla I remember you milking Engineering for all it was worth.  I look forward to seeing what you do with a class that is purely based on fusing gadgets with ranged weapons.

Something else to add for everyone's consideration, take another look at the "Absorb" skill video.  At first I didn't understand what was going on but now I do - in that video two char player characters are fighting two char mobs, and a human engineer ally enters the scene.  As the first allied char begins to flee, the Engineer appears to drop a medpack for him, which gives him regen.  Then the Engineer starts to intercept enemy fire with his shield to protect his allies. In other words, in this particular fight, the Engineer played the role of both defender and support. That is just so awesome and epitomizes their objectives for Guild Wars 2.

Cannot wait for this game.

Yeah this is essentially what was going through my head when I watched and read about it. "This is WoW Rokov in Guild Wars." I lack a dwarf race to fully emulate the character but I'll make do!

Massively wrote an article about how one of their writers was really upset at the idea of 5mans in Guild Wars 2, but after getting a hands on is now very certain they will work.  It's an interesting read and it serves to me as an unbiased assessment that yes, what Arena.net is trying to do with party balance is in fact working in Guild Wars 2.  Rejoice!

Everytime I read something about "ZOMG no healers or tankz wtf!? How will we raidz properly!" I just think "We didn't need no stinking main tank or healer to kill Dark Falz! We brought BEASTS and that was enough!"

What I find dumb about his review is that he's complaining about group size being 5, which is almost the standard "while you're leveling up" size of a dungeon group size +/-1 in every MMO I've played while leveling up. End game content is often an entirely different beast. In GW1 that'd be PvP stuff which is much larger groups. In WoW it is raids which are much larger groups. Blah. People! I'm frustrated with the mindset that the game is only the game at level cap, and that everything before is just filler.

SYLVARI WEEK GO

First post is about their iteration on Sylvari character design. I have to say I am proud, perhaps DAMN proud, of Guild Wars 2's team for not settling for elves here.  They've updated what we've seen on the Sylvari so far making them more plant, less elf. What they have now still carries the svelte, lithe appearance, but a very un-humanoid looking form.  Once you tie it together with some of their armor designs, the results are quite interesting:

That said I do want to see more.  It'll be interesting to see if they end up wondering too far off the "in-human" edge of things for me to want to play them or not.
