Oh hot damn, I like that! Now I'm actually interested in playing them just because they are so different from everything else. I'm very please with the remake!

More Sylvari fun, this time with audio cues.

This is the most underwhelming of the audio episodes so far, but I think that's because it doesn't have the benefit of the previous game's lore to draw from to make it more interesting.  Still, I continue to like how it sheds light on the Sylvari's unique origins.

The Sylvari page on the Guild Wars 2 site has been updated, containing more lore, history, and a fancy new video.  A couple of interesting points I took away from it:

  • The Sylvari are, for some mysterious reason, immune to draconic corruption.  Whilst humans can be slain and raised as undead, Charr made Crystaline by dragon's touch, and Norn turned into frost-covered monsters, the Dragons have yet to find a way to corrupt the Sylvari.  While there are a bunch of theories on why, the fact this is true at all is interesting.  Of course, being "uncorruptable" doesn't mean the dragons can't just kill them.
  • They actually explain what the Nightmare Court is, which is good because I felt like the 2nd Guild Wars novel kinda left that hanging.

New Guild Wars 2 news today:  First they talked about the demo that will be at Gamescom and PAX Prime with the differences in it.  There's also a pair of articles on PVP in Guild Wars 2:  one on general PvP talk, and another on one of the maps in Guild Wars 2 pvp.

I still have to read these but i'll add my comments to this post or the topic later.

Found this YouTube video of a walkthrough of the GamesCom Demo of Guild Wars 2 (Similar build will be at PAX Prime next week).  If you have any friends who haven't been paying attention to the game, this video will bring them up to speed as to why Guild Wars 2 is going to be awesome.

I also wanted to call attention to a pair of changes you might have missed if you haven't been reading the latest that went into the GamesCome demo:

  1. Skills no longer cost Energy.  Energy is now used exclusively for their dodge mechanic, allowing them to remove the potion mechanic from the.  It sounds like it was sturring up quite a controversy and I imagine we may hear more on this in the future if Arena.net is happy with the change.
  2. Skill aquisition has changed.  I'm not sure but I think what used to happen was players earned slotted skills (as in the second half of their skill bar) as rewards or from trainers, and they earned their weapon skills simply by leveling up.  In the new build, they want to make the slotted skills the kind of things you might have to hunt down, a-la the original Guild Wars, and have moved the weapon skills to things you earn by using the weapon.  In other words, the more you use a greatsword, the more greatsword skills you unlock.

On paper I am happy with both of these changes though not without some concern.  While earning weapon skills via using the weapon sounds like a neat way to customize your play by playing the way you want, it runs into two issues.  One is we've kinda seen this before in WoW with its weapon skill system, wherein if you spent your whole career using two handed swords, and then earned and Epic two-handed Mace, you couldn't hit with the broad side of shit with it until you wasted time swinging at wolves.  That was dumb, and annoying.

In GW2 though this isn't tied to chance to hit though so it's not an issue right Adam?  No it's even worse and here goes my second concern.  If part of the point to the game's class design is any class can fill any role, but in order to fill that role you need to wield new equipment, this will create the problem of people not being able to fill all the roles their class could fill out of some stubborn insistance that they are a "Greatsword Guardian."   if that becomes prevenant, then you invite the same "There are no Tanks" problem that all MMOs suffer even though this is supposed to be a game where that's not an issue.

Anyway, I'm hoping it doesn't come to that, and you should enjoy the below video :)

I'm going to chain together a suite of GW2 PvP videos into this post via Admin rights. I saw some PvP During gamescom but for various reason I couldn't post the videos here at the time, so I'm trying to track some down and share them.

I am personally excited to try the PvP though I imagine I'll be less invested in it than I will be the PvE.  That said, the raw mobility of the PvP may make it very appealing so I imagine I'll actually enjoy giving it a shot.  It's always more fun to pvp in an MMO where position and targeting are variables IMO.

TotalBiscuit on youTube got a chance to record his entire 40 minute Demo session of Guild Wars 2 at Gamescom.  If you'd rather not spoil the Charr starter experience don't watch, but it's also the cleanest looking and sounding GW2 footage to come out of Gamescom so far (HD resolution, w/ sound feed).

Found a video of the PAX Prime 2011 Guild Wars 2 panel.  Most of what I've seen and heard so far has been stuff we've heard before with little scatterings of new details.  However, one of the panelists is discussing how GUILDS will work in Guild Wars 2 and as such he mentioned some interesting ideas.

It sounds like his thoughts on guilds is that they are, in effect, little social networks, and while it's cool to belong to a social network, it's not cool when being in one group means you cannot be in another.  So, to that end, they have decided that in GW2, when you join a guild your Account joins the guild (like in Guild Wars1) but when you sign in, you get to choose if you are currently representing that guild or not.  In addition, you can be a member of multiple guilds, so you can choose which guild you want to be on when you sign in to your character.

There are so many things I love about this implimentation:

  1. If you sign in on a given day and are like "You know what, no Guild Drama for me to day" you can not activate any of your guild memberships.  Not being signed in as a guild means you won't see Gchat, they won't know you're on, etc.
  2. If you want to have a Guild for PvE and a guild for PvP, you can alternate which one you are active to at a given moment.
  3. Deciding to level up an alt unbeknownst to your guild can be done with introduction of that alt into the guild later being an easy action.

Knowing that this is how the system is going to work, I actually think it would be really neat for us to set up a Gameknights guild.  It would allow us, as a small group, to have a little name/banner we can wave when we do stuff together ourselves, but the way GW2 will work it will free up to the more hardcore GW2 players of our group to go find other guilds and be members of their groups as well.  So if, for example, Tim and Mark and I get into the "raid-scene" or whatever it'll be in GW2 and we want to find a guild more into that, we can, and if Glenn and Grace want to be more into the "pvp-scene" than gameknights is, they can find a guild with that, they can, and still also be a member of gameknights and roll together on Wednesdays.

Thoughts?

EDIT: Oh yeah I should attach the panel video in case you want to watch it yourself.  This is part 1.

Thoughts?

This game continue to challenge the norm and ask "Why are we doing it like this?" to the MMO standards and I want to hug them.

Also read in this Joystiq preview that they removed mana from the game in a recent build and you just have to deal with cooldowns. As I find mana-less champs in LoL to be more fun then mana/energy dependant champs, I approve of this. Who knows if this is permenant, they said it was a last build change which means it might just be a test for PAX. Hopefully it sticks. If not no mana, I'd be happy at least with an energy based system, like rogues in WoW or ninjas in LoL.
