I'll mention another hilarious guide in here. Not quite as amusing as the Taric one but still great: the MFing Cho'gath.

Just as an FYI: To everyone who has been enjoying Mordenkaiser this week, I found out about this bug today that will be fixed in the next patch (already fixed on the PTR according to PTR patch notes):

Children of the Grave
Fixed a bug where Mordekaiser would infrequently gain health from Mace of Spades or Syphon of Destruction while Children of the Grave was on his target.

So yeah if you've ever felt invincible while using "Children of the Grave" this might be why.

Additionally, I am investigating how the matchmaker works with people of mixed level like our group. What I'm hearing so far is that there's part of the LoL matchmaking group that is affectionately called "n00b island" and that the second anyone over level 13 makes a premade with some one under level 13, that player is yanked forever from "n00b island" regardless of level.

This makes me glad that I've hesitated on suggesting that we as a game night group start queuing up for LoL PvP on the matchmaker. I still think we should do that sometime, but maybe we should use that as the basis for our breaking up into groups if we do.

Finally, here's a reason I'm glad I'm on Twitter, because Twitter found me this:
Ashe and Katarina about to kiss

Okay so, Luri had asked me to give her pointers on Garen and due to timing hadn't been able to give her advice in game. So I ended up writing her an e-mail that by the time I was done with it started to look like a guide. So I figured I'd post it here.

Now, at this point Garen isn't my PvP main, he's actually number 3 on my most played champs, so I'm not sure how much of this info is out of date, but I still figured it might be nice for nothing else than myself to collect my thoughts on playing him in one spot before I forget from playing Ashe all the time :)

Quick Description:

Name: Garen, the might of Demacia
Primary Type: Melee DPS Secondary Type: None
League of Legends Official Info Page: http://www.leagueoflegends.com/champions/view/86/garen_the_might_of_demacia.
Refer to this page for specific info on how his abilities and HP scale.

Strategy (or your pre-game prep)

Garen is a melee DPS, but unlike say Katarina or Akali he's a tough Melee DPS. His abilities are purely attack damage (except his ultimate, whose damage isn't mitigate-able or improvable anyway) driven, so Ability Power is completely wasted on him. As such, armor penetration is big for him. Garen's Judgement also crits according to his crit rate, so don't hesitate to stack that either.

For your Masteries, I recommend a full offense build, focusing on Improved Exhaust, reducing ability cooldowns, increasing armor pen and improving ignite, improving attack damage, crit, and eventually taking havok at the end.

For runes, if you have any, try and get health, armor pen and damage in some combination. I don't really have a rune build to recommend yet.

For Summoner Spells, you'll want the following based off what you have available to you. I recommend the top two first, but consider the others:
  • Exhaust - for stopping champions from running away.
  • Flash - for stopping champions from running away and getting out of danger (turret aggro) yourself. (Available level 12)
  • Ghost - works as a replacement to Flash until you get it, similarly good for escape and chasing down foes.
  • Heal - If you're having problems staying alive this spell is never bad.
  • Cleanse - Sometimes you fight a lot of champs who can CC you. While casting Judgement while immobilized will end it, judgement won't ignore stun or fear or taunt, so cleanse can get you out of these.

Tactics (or in-game combat)

Here's a quick look at Garen's abilities (I'm skipping porting in exact numbers, please see the official info page for that as these numbers tend to change with patches).

PASSIVE: Perseverance, by staying out of combat for (currently) 7 seconds you begin regaining health. In this case "Staying out of combat" means "Not taking damage." This means that you are free to push a lane and so long as you're smart about not aggroing minions, you can cause this to kick in. Perseverance's health regen won't replace a potion, but it's still fabulous if you're trying to hold a lane while your partner returns. Just keep that in mind while laneing: Garen is not a tank, so if it's you vs 16 minons, flee, get to grass, let your health regen, and face them with a minion wave of your own, at least until you are higher level and can wipe out whole waves with a single judgement.

Q SKILL : Decisive Strike, Decisive strike is one of your most important skills. It does three critical things for Garen: it increases his movement speed for 2 seconds, it increases his next auto attack's damage by a fixed amount, regardless of items, and silences the target hit by said auto-attack. It is an awesome skill to open up a fight, stop someone from escaping, or interrupting a channeled skill like NuNu's ultimate as it will stop if he's silenced. Be sure to hit Q and then right click on who you want to shut the hell up. Decisive Strike's bonus damage applies while Garen is tearing into turrets and other structures, so spam the hell out of it during a push.

W SKILL: Courage Courage is your throwaway. It's not that it's bad, it just doesn't match Garen's primary role, which is damage dealer. You'll still want 1 point in it at level 3 so you can pop it's active to reduce incoming damage, but wait until you've leveled other skills to take it past level 1. Use of courage's active requires patience and understanding your foes, which can be hard. If you have a foe like Ryze who telegraphs his big bursts of damage by caging you, use the cage as your sign to pop Courage's active so that you take less damage. Courage is also good to use when you notice you've aggro'd a turret are fleeing the scene.

E SKILL: Judgement, Judgement is your bread and butter. Use of judgement requires critical timing of the skill's use as it has a longer cooldown (compared to his other abilities anyway). In an ideal situation you will start using it when you're already in melee with your target, and then follow them by right clicking the ground ahead of them as it goes. An important thing to note about judgement is all of your abilities except your ultimate can be cast while judgement is active, including summoner spells! Cast judgement and your foe is still getting away? Exhaust to slow them down or ghost to catch up! Start judgement up and draw more aggro than you meant to? Pop Courage and use heal! You can even activate decisive strike while judgement is active to get a quick speed boost and cause your first auto-attack after judgement to silence the target!

R SKILL (ULTIMATE): Demacian Justice, One of the best champion finishers in the game, this skill does a base damage plus an additional amount based off of the amount of health the target is missing! In other words, the more max health the target has and the more of it you've already taken away, the harder Demacian Justice hits! This skill even has a range to it so it can be used on a target who is just out of reach! It's only weakness is it's long cooldown, but other than it's an awesome way to turn what might have been an even match into one in Garen's favor in one skill. Be sure to use this as a finisher, not an opener, as it's less effective the healthier the target is.

In general your order for leveling his skills should be as follows (I am typing this out of game so if you find you can't do exactly this, do as closely as you can):

  1. Judgement
  2. Decisive Strike
  3. Courage
  4. Judgement
  5. Judgement
  6. Demacian Justice
  7. Judgement
  8. Decisive Strike
  9. Judgement
  10. Decisive Strike
  11. Demacian Justice
  12. Decisive Strike
  13. Decisive Strike
  14. Courage
  15. Courage
  16. Demacian Justice
  17. Courage
  18. Courage

Your typical fight should start by you hiding in the bushes or positioning yourself to be out of minion's way before you attack your target. Then open up with Decisive Strike and silence them. Once silenced, the foe will probably start to run, so immediately trigger Judgement and follow them along, using exhaust, ghost, or flash as necessary. If judgement doesn't finish the target, destroy them with Demacian Justice. This tactic will win most fights so long as you do not draw so much ire from other foes that they kill you before you can complete it. Usually after doing this you should check your health and see if it's time to find a grass stand and hide in it until you regain some health to do it again.

Against someone with a snare, start by charging him with Decisive Strike. If you are snared, immediately pop either cleanse if you have it and if not pop judgement early as it will break the effect. You may also want to pop courage as you spin towards him so it can soak up some of the incoming damage. Once judgement is in range you'll start cutting through his health, probably enough to finish him with Demacian Justice.

Word of advice: The cooldown on Garen's swings w/o attack speed items is such that you might want to try moving manually between swings. So move, click on target, move click on target, move click on target while chasing. You may see better results.

Items:

I lean heavily on a damage build for Garen, though I will include some other ideas in case you are having survivability problems.

PRIMARY BUILD "WREAKING BALL GAREN":
  1. Start with a longsword. This will help you gank champs early game.
  2. Buy normal boots of speed.
  3. Complete a Brutalizer.
  4. Complete Mercury Treads. Previously I got Boots of Swiftness for him as I found it helped chase by giving him a faster overall move speed, but I've been experimenting with Mercury Treads and so far like the results, so try either. Alternatively Berserker Greaves aren't terrible as a faster attacking Garen kills faster :)
  5. Complete Yomuu's Ghostblade from Brutalizer. Remember! This item has an active ability that can help a ton with escapes and chases!
  6. Build a Last Whisper. The Attack damage on this item has been nerfed, but we want it for the 40% armor penetration and the attack speed increase. Stacking with the armor pen already gained from Bruatlizer/Ghostblade, this will go along way to harming both champs and turrets.
  7. Build Infinity Edge. This item adds even more awesome attack damage, and makes your crits powerful. At this point taking out entire minion waves with a single judgement should be a synch.
  8. Chances are the game is over, but if it's not round out the build with either Phantom Dancer for faster attacks and more crits, or try and build a Randun's Omen if you want to be more durable. A Bloodthirster also wouldn't be bad.

SECONDARY BUILD "FARMER GAREN"
This build focuses on life steal over raw damage, making Garen able to stay in a lane better and regain health faster by farming minions or neutrals. This build isn't quite a jungler build but it's still nice for staying alive. You'll notice this build doesn't have the damage capability of the above one, but it might be better for learning Garen.
  1. Start with a Vampric Septer
  2. Buy normal boots of speed.
  3. Complete Berzerker Greaves (faster attack = more life stolen)
  4. Complete Bloodthister
  5. Pick up Brutalizer and Ghostblade because they just work great with him.
  6. Continue to stack Bloodthirsters until you win. If that gets boring, mix it up with Infinity edges, maybe 1 last whisper.

FOR SILLIES BUILD "DURABILITY GAREN"
To reiterate, Garen is not a tank. That being said even though his abilities don't support tanking (they don't protect allies, CC foes, taunt, or improve his durability while getting hit), he does have a large health pool and pretty good armor, so building him as a pseudo tank and running in a lane with a squishier DPS can be tons of fun. Try this build out if you are like me and sometimes wish Garen was a Tank.
  1. Start with a Regrowth Pendant
  2. Buy normal boots
  3. Complete Ninja Tabi (Boots) - for armor and dodge
  4. Complete Warmog's Armor (prioritizing the Giant's belt over the other items first)
  5. Build a Randun's Omen.
  6. Yomuu's Ghostblade so you have some killing power.
  7. From here look for weapons that include health or armor with attack damage, like Frozen mallet, Atma's Impailer, or maybe pick up Banshee's Veil or Aegis of the Legion for even more durability.

From there it's practice. If you want even more guidance, try checking out Riot's official champion spotlight @ http://blog.leagueoflegends.com/?p=370

Season One starts next week. With the new interface and Competitive Ranked mode, comes a new champion, Xin Zhao. He looks a bit like a more single-target version of Garen w/ some crowd control, and able to Tank, which means I should probably pick him up.

I have attached the spotlight for him that went up today:

You guys may have heard me mention someone called "ColdTurkey" before. He's a guy on YouTube who does video game commentaries and for several months now he's been on a League of Legends kick. His videos tend to give outstanding insight on various champions and builds and while I wouldn't agree with everything he puts out, he does a solid job of explaining why he goes a certain way with a champion/build/tactic, etc.

Today he released a video on Katarina that demonstrates just how good this guy is at figuring this stuff out. He breaks down the AP vs AD Katarina argument quite nicely and even provides an interesting AD build I'm looking forward to trying (because I never really figured out a good one myself). If there's a champ you are itching to figure out how to play better I do recommend popping over to his YouTube channel and seeing if he did a commentary on said champion and taking notes.

I'm going to assume you all will see this the next time you log into League of Legends, but just in case you don't, they released an incredibly bad-assed cinematic trailer, which you should watch.

My favorite parts? Morgana being sexy, Kayle without helmet, Katarina being a bad ass around 1:30, and Ashe being a bad-ass around 1:40. It's also cool getting to see some summoners in the flesh. Also, Cho'gath is a TURRET DIVAH!

The two odd things: One, what is up with Ryze being heroic? And two, is it just me or do the minions Ryze takes out at 0:53 look a little bit like mini-Jaxes?

I got to watch the ColdTurkey videos of a few champions last night. They're great for introductions to characters, but the ones I watched weren't as in depth as I hoped. Probably because I just checked out Annie and Nidalee which aren't his forte for character types, but yeah, great introductions to what a character is like.

Hmm, some interesting stuff in the Season One Patch Notes

Summoner Spells
  • Revive now increases your movement speed by 225%, diminishing to normal over 12 seconds.
  • Cleanse now only removes crowd controlling effects, silences and blinds. It no longer removes effects such as damaging debuffs or armor/stat debuffs
  • Ignite damage per level reduced to 20 from 25.

No word of Flash going away. Sing a happy song.

General
  • The Nexus and Nexus Turrets now become invulnerable if all of your team's inhibitors respawn
  • Inhibitors no longer remain destroyed for successively longer periods - they are always destroyed for 5 minutes now.

  • Team Kills and Enemy Team Kills are now shown underneath the Kill Count bar

I like the team kills change. The inhibitors change will be... interesting. Might help stop teams from ninja-ing nexus kills.

There's also a stack of champion specific changes. I for one am happy about the Akali change giving her Shadow Dance stacks with kills and assists. The gap between her and Katarina narrows just a we-bit more...

Oh, also, if you're wondering where ColdTurkey found those LoL wallpapers for his video intro, they're all from the Chinese version of the game and you can find them here

I've been poking around a LoL wiki while waiting on endless hold today. I think I need to give a straight AP build a try on Nidalee. I also found caster's version of Stark's Fervor called Will of the Ancients that I'm going to start picking up stead of Stark's during this testing. If anyone's looking to play some LoL I'd like to do a practice game against a person trying my normal and then this revised build to see which is tougher to play against.

Noting the item build I want to try just because I can. So nyah!

I'll probably never get to the Deathfire Grasp, but I think this build will let me hit a lot harder with Nidalee, and have her heals be much stronger come end of a game.
