And just when I thought maybe it was time to get out, it looks like they might pull me back in.

Ladies and Gentlemen:  League of Legends : DOMINION

Short of it:  Capture points and defend them game-mode for League of Legends.  The trailer attached makes it look pretty fun (and good for Garens!)

Looks interesting! Can't seem to garner much detail other than it's a control point map though from the video and press release. Tried looking for details and read some rumors on them introducing new items specifically for that map so they can control balance through item changes between this new mode and classic maps.

I actually had a feeling a new game mode was coming after that "War stopped in Kalamanda" article came out. Though I was expecting some sort of PvE type game mode since they mentioned the possibility of that at one point awhile ago. Not to say I'm disappointed, still definitely interested in this new mode.

Just hope this isn't another Magma Champer announcement. Get us all excited for new stuff and then never see the release until tons of month later. I love Riot but they get a little too excited about somethings and tend to go "OMG LOOK SEE WHAT'S COMING!?" a tad to early.

They suggest sometime after August. Personally, I think this is a terrible idea.

Why?

Riot can't balance champions on two MAPS, let alone two GAMETYPES. I really hope I'm being cynical here, but I imagine that stuns are going to be very, very overpowered in this game, not to mention global movement ults like TF's teleport and Pantheon's mandrop.

I know mandrop got its range nerfed, and I think TF's teleport did too.

It was nerfed indeed.

I wonder how many people will be going there.  As in what the team sizes are going to be.  I assume 5 as per normal.  I was thinking they needed another 5 man map since that's the main reason that Twisted Treeline doesn't seem as popular.  I suppse I could watch the trailer again a lot of times and try to figure it out, but fuck.  Who has time for that?  Someone with summers off maybe.  Not like there's anyone like that around.

Attached is an interview IGN did with Riot Games President Marc Merrill (Tryndamere on the forums).  Here's the bullet points for those who won't/can't watch:

  • Is a 5v5 mode
  • Sounds like it has a 20 minute time limit
  • New buff system - jungling will not exist on the new map
  • because players may be team fighting at game's start champions will start the game at level 3
  • New scoring system to emphasize that victory is more about taking and holding points NOT K/D/A. Edit Update:  Nope it's EXACTLY like Dawn of War II. Each team starts with 500 points.  When your team commands more points than the other, the other team starts losing points at a rate based on how many more points your team controls then theirs.  The first team to run out of victory points wins.  Personally that scoring system was one of the few things I thought was brilliant about DoWII.  It makes even 1v1s these thrilling matches where the battle really isn't over and can be turned around even when you only have 1 victory point left!
  • There are clearly minions in the video though how they factor in is not clear.  Perhaps captured objectives spawn minions that fight towards enemy points?
  • Marc Merrill seems to think that all character types will remain viable in Dominion, and goes through a list of reasons as to why.  I would summarize it all as "Because all character types are needed to win 5 on 5 team fights, all character types are viable."

I'm still of the opinion that this is going to be a bruisers' paradise - the better your team can sustain and absorb damage while also dealing it the better your team will do.  That being said I like playing bruisers so A OKAY here.

EDIT UPDATE: Additionally - IGN wrote a more detailed article you can read here.

My concern will be how well carries will be able to get the ball rolling. I'd hate for the game to run to a point only to have Tryndamere then just be able to steamroll everything solo due to his 1000+ crits every .9 seconds.

EDIT: That being said, it sounds like mobility and harass will be incredably useful. I'm gonna looove playing Nidalee in this! That article definitely makes bruisers, tanks, and supports sound super useful in it.

It seems to me like carries would be risker as there's a higher chance of small-scale team fights in which it will be harder for carries to ignore focus fire or CC.  If they carry cannot win 1v1, its sure to be a risk. Unless of course said carries are sources of CC in which case they would be even more valiable.

That said we're just theorizing at this point.  Let's be honest - no one has yet tried this game type with a MOBA style game so for all we know the stuff we think will be fine will be broke and the stuff we're worried will be broke will be fine.

More videos and details on Dominion.

Again for TL;DW or "Too lazy; didn't watch":

  • Fast pasted 20 minute game.  You're looking at faster death timers, faster gold/xp gain.  We're talking things like Infinity Edge around 10 min into the game.
  • Biggest update to LoL to date.
  • Theory:  "Summoners Rift requires team work and co-ordination at key points in a match, but Dominion will require team work constantly."
  • They imagine most fights being 2v2s, or 3v3s as opposed to having a lot of 5v5 slug fests.
  • NEW:  The "Quests" system they used in the tutorial will give teams incentive to try for bonus objectives for some sort of unspecified reward.
