I've taken an extra day off work from the week after, and am already considering buying high-refresh rate monitor(s) now that we're confirmed we'll have an uncapped screen-rate.

Still waiting to find out if it will support 3x wide natively or not.

I'd be surprised as it's a console port...

This comes out in two weeks (August 9th) - who is planning to pick it up @ launch?

I'm kinda interested -- would scratch the same itch as Dauntless but probably run better. I poked around their website and didn't find anything about a sub fee, so I'm assuming it's a "just buy the game and play" deal, right?

Yes.  Buy the box, play the full game, no sub.  Console players would have to pay their normal "subscription that lets you multiplayer" thing, but as PC users we don't have to worry about that.   Sounds like there would be DLC to grab at some point but I think it's mostly either cosmetic (optional) or expanding the end game (meaning you don't need it at first).

Honestly I like Dauntless, and I hear Dauntless' grind is nicer than MH:W (and MH:W's grind is nicer than previous entries in the series), but Dauntless is also Free-to-Play and very much unfinished, and I feel like it'll be more excited to stay committed to a completed game.  MH:W also does something I wish Dauntless does and has large exploration areas to reach your hunts which makes the game feel more like a location you inhabit and less like a weird set of arenas you keep getting drop-shipped to.

Monster Hunter looks a TON nicer, but mostly when we go out hunting monsters in Dauntless, there's this huge floating island to search with nothing going on other than some basic gathering. Feels pointless. Maybe there'll be more to do later, but there isn't right now. And I don't know if they'll wipe beta progress upon completion. If they do, it'll kill my interest, but if they change the lower level grind by adding more going on in the world to address my first issue but don't wipe progress, then I'll have missed out on part of the content. Kind of a Catch-22 that is sucky for them to be in.

But yeah, Monster Hunter being a complete and finished game (plus a super pretty one) makes me excited. The events and way the world is built make it look far more interesting than Dauntless's current state.

But I will miss my mustache.

It's worth noting that I can't speak personally to MH:W's quality because I've not played it.   The biggest ringing endorsement I have for it one of the youtube/twitch guys I follow who lists PSO as one of his favorite games of all time picked this up as his first Monster Hunter and feel deeeeeppp into fun, obsessive, addiction for it for weeks before he consumed the game's available content (at a rate of 8 hour nightly streams several days a week so no risk of me consuming it that fast).  That same guy is buying the game again on PC to do it all over again.

That said though I think it's also worth remembering that Dauntless is F2P so I mean if it ever becomes more like what we want from a game its not like we can't go back after we've had our fill of MH:W.

I do worry about how many cutscenes and how much tutorializing we'll have to endure from MH:W before we can play together.  I did like how after only a single mission you can start co-oping in Dauntless.

My feelings are pretty similar to Mish's on this. Dauntless just feels very beta to me and so while it has my interest in so far as I'm interested to see where it goes, in it's current state I'm not feeling it. MH:W on the other hand is a complete game and from what I've seen has my attention in that I will purchase it when it comes out (barring reviews mentioning horrible screw ups in the port).

I will not be purchasing it day 1 just cause I will be out of town for a number days during the release. When I get back I'll see where everything is at.

I'm crazy-excited to see interest among the GameKnight crew for a Monster Hunter game period :).  As a hardcore series fan I think the move to PC is beyond overdue at this point.

And best of all, unlike D3 or other games I tend to love to grind, in Monster Hunter since pretty much the beginning your progression is almost entirely by unlock, by actual "player skill" and by equipment. Since I tend to keep my equip sets and just keep building/upgrading new ones, I should be able to consistently "level down" for game night by wearing lesser gear if I do my Diablo 3 thing of overplaying the game and "getting too far ahead".

... or face the reality that work+married+baby means I wont be THAT far ahead :)

I should have mentioned that I won't be purchasing it on day one as I don't want to risk potential horrible PC port issues. Wanna make sure it is either a good, clean port or that they're actively patching them before I pull the trigger.
