Formerly the "Nintendo NX"

(FYI: I will update this topic name after the reveal)

We'll finally be getting a reveal of Nintendo's next console tonight @ 7pm.

I can't wait for this era of speculative clickbait internet journalism to end.

EDIT UPDATE: Watch this trailer!  Conceptually this machine is brilliant.

More news and info @ Nintendo.

This Engadget article has more details and photos.

I love the concept behind this console. The multiplayer options seems great for the most part. Handing over a controller for impromptu gaming is neat though using that sliver of a controller for any length of time would be annoying. Hopefully being able to network these things when multiplaying will be pretty painless too. I think it was cool to show the multiplayer options with Splatoon but I really didn't care that they showed off Skyrim, not like it should be hard to play that and it's yet another old game port which they seemed to do a bit of with Wii U and no one really seemed to care. The 3rd party list looks good but I'm hoping it's not another "yeah we'll port old games to your new console" list.

I'm excited and hoping for the best but I just hope Nintendo will have learned from past mistakes. My main concerns are the power behind it and battery life in mobile mode. I'll more than likely be getting it, just a matter of when which will be dependent on games on launch.

Yeah, I think the whole hybrid console/portable idea is really neat. But I agree with Mark on the sliver of a controller and that the tech specs are gonna be super important to if I'd consider getting one or not.

Nintendo was on the Jimmy Fallon show tonight and played the Switch on live TV.  If you can't stomach Fallon maybe don't watch, but if you can, kick it to about 4 minutes 55 seconds where they bust the Switch out.

Yeah in my head the whole device looked bigger/heavier based on previous trailers.  In Fallon and Reggie Fise-Ame's hands it looks a lot more like a "portable" device, which I find exciting.

Nintendo Swtich Live presentation from 1/12/2017, live from Tokyo.  Presentation is in Japanese with an English voice over.

Suggested Retail Price US: $299

Launch Date: March 3rd, 2017. Early March 2017.  I forgot the exact date.  Will be a world wide launch.  Will update.

There will be no Region Locking.

Battery life will vary by game, advertized 3 to 6 hours.

Console can be recharged using USB-C

Up to 8 Switches can be connected to each other for wireless multiplayer

Joy-Con Controller: Because there are shoulder buttons on the slide part of each side of the controller, each controller side is 1 analog stick, and 6 buttons.   Each is also a motion sensitive independent of each other.   Will come in colors.  Also available is a slide on wrist strap basically turning each Joy-Con into a mini wii-remote.  Supposedly have a high expressive rumble tech for very precise. force-feedback.

New Game Announced "1 2 Switch": This is going to be your Wii-Sports/NintendoLand game.  It features a bunch of mini games that can be played with another using the two Joy-Cons.  The biggest example of games included are a wild-west shootout game play.  Games boast being more about watching your opponent, the other player, than the screen.  Launches with Nintendo Switch on 3/3/17.

New Game Announced "Arms":  Appears to be a 1-on-1 fighting game where each player uses both Joy-Con to be each hand where they control over the top characters with extending springing hands.  Claims to be complex in design so more than a party game.   Game has solo mode and split-screen mode.  You can also use network play if each player has their own Switch.  Will release this Spring.

New Game Announced " Splatoon 2" is coming to Switch.  Supports the Joy-Con or Pro Controller.  May finally add much needed local multiplayer support.  Launch expected Summer 2017.

New Game Announced "Super Mario Odyssey" : 3DMario set in a strangely realistic and modern looking world.... possibly open world?   Very nice looking with some large looking environments.  Also top-hat shaped airship.  Also Mario around some really normal looking people which looks super odd.  Cool new hat tossing move.   Bowser actually trying to marry Peach?!?!?  Release Holiday 2017.

New Game Announced "Xenoblade 2": A new RPG from Monolith Soft.  Release ???

New Game Announced "Fire Emblem Warriors": Koei-Tecmo Team Ninja action game using Fire Emblem characters.  Release ???  Probably a Hyrule Warriors kind of game using Fire Emblem characters.

Dragon Quest X and XI and Dragon Quest Heroes I & II will all come to Switch.

New Game Announced "New Shin Migami Tensei": Atlus and Sega game... I'm not sure... looks kinda odd?

New Game Announced "Project Octopath Traveler": Square Enix pixel art + 3D environments RPG.

Individuals appeared representing the following companies who want to make new games for the Switch:

  • SEGA
  • Todd Howard from Bethesda.  Confirmed Skyrim for Switch.
  • SUDA51 from Grasshopper Manufacture.   Suggested Travis Touchdown will be making a comback on Switch.  No game title yet.
  • EA Worldwide.  EA Sports will bring games to the Switch.

Saw glimpses of the following the in hype video:

  • Sonic
  • Minecraft
  • Skylanders??
  • Rayman
  • Lego Stuff
  • DBZ games
  • Disgaea
  • Just Dance
  • Fifa

I found this presentation to be largely a positive in my opinion! Here's my initial two cents.

The good:

  • $300 starting price is good! People seem to get questionable on console once you go above that price so starting it there feels like a great move, more people possibly on the fence may be willing to pick it up at launch.
  • Zelda: Breath of the Wild trailer was amazing and I'm totally sold on it. I can't wait to play it!
  • Zelda being a launch title (think that's the first console to have Zelda as a launch title?) is going to sell Switches. Yes the Wii U version has the same release date but if anyone was even thinking of getting a Switch and wanted new Zelda, they will no doubt just pick up the Switch and that version. Plus, portable BotW sounds great. I'm also questionable on how well BotW is gonna run on the Wii U compared to Switch.
  • Arms looks like a goofy fun game. I'd probably pick it up depending on how much and when. Big downside though to me is that game looks like it should be a launch title. I'm sure it'll be out not far into Spring.
  • Super Mario Odyssey looks pretty good. The hat mechanic looks like a good new mechanic for a Mario game and I'm down to see where it goes.
  • Suda 51 (No More Heroes, Killer7, etc.) stated Travis Touchdown of No More Heroes is making a return. Man I want a new No More Heroes badly.
  • I'm down for Fire Emblem Warriors even though my Dynasty Warriors exposure is small.
  • Joy-con's still look mostly good. Having them for quick passing to make multiplayer is nice. I also think the "HD" rumble will be a really nice, if small, addition.
  • USB-C rechargeable makes any worry of battery life go away. No proprietary chargers will make it easy to pick up a battery pack to extend the life if you have a real issue with it or use an existing one if you have it.
  • I like the idea of local play with connecting multiple Switches. I'd hope this would be easy to setup and do.

The bad:

  • What are the launch titles? Zelda and "1, 2, Switch!"? They can not just release with just those two even if one is the highly anticipated Zelda. That'd suck balls.
  • Online Multiplayer is going to be going to be a paid service after the initial free trail this summer. Nintendo, you need to show us you can make an even half decent online service before you start charging for that. Everything that's been done before has been garbage. They did mention getting free classic Virtual Consoles game each month so that lessens the annoyance but it's still not good.
  • I have no idea what's going on with "1, 2, Switch". I get that's it's their launch mini-game title and you're using the Joy-cons but what are these people playing? WTF is the gameplay?

The "meh":

  • Not entirely sold on Splatoon 2. It's got a lot of nice new additions but the core gameplay seems to be the same. I mean, that's fine but to me it looks like it's a bunch of stuff that could've just been DLC for the first game and they just decided to package it into 2.
  • The Joy-cons as separate controllers still look crazy small and would probably cramp my large hands with extended use. I'm still viewing using those Joy-cons as sorta "quick pass and play" though so I'm not super worried about it. The strap add-ons though looks like they could fill out some space to make them more comfortable possibly.

Overall positive. What's going to sell me on getting one though is what the actual launch games are and the release dates on the rest. There's enough games here and potential future games that make me want it (Zelda, Arms, FE Warriors, Mario, new No More Heroes?, Project Octopath Traveler, maybe new Splatoon) but if they're not releasing until later I could hold off. Though I'll admit that after watching that Zelda trailer it makes me just want to say fuck it and buy it to play that as soon as possible. It's probably fair to say if reviews come out and say it is the best Zelda yet and evokes the feeling of the earlier games, I will probably go and get it.

Wii launched with Zelda:Twilight Princess.  Not first Nintendo console to launch with a Zelda.   Very similar situation.

You're right! I forgot about that!

I'm totally cool with them continuing the trend of Zelda games as launch titles then.
