What I'm hearing online does make me suspicious of there being much in the way of multiplayer to this honestly.  That or it's busted.  Who knows.

I heard a tale on Reddit of a pair of guys who got to the same location and whatnot, but could not see each other. Take that for what you will.

Yeah, there were a couple of streamers in the same buildings on the same planet, but one was exploring in the daylight, the other at night.  I wonder if there's a server aspect to it.  Or maybe I read waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much into some little part of something they maybe mentioned, and they never intended there to be multiplayer.

From what I've heard, server lobbies are a thing so that wouldn't surprise me. It could also be a bug.

From how little the devs wanted to talk about the multiplayer and how much they talk about exploring, I get the feeling that if they could, they'd wish they could not mention multiplayer at all and then wait for the reaction of when people realize that there is multiplayer and run into a real person for the first time. Mind blown. But, nope, they mentioned it and people are craving for info so they're doing this odd dance of giving details without giving details. Not trying to say people don't deserve to know but the devs are probably silently cursing the hype train at this point.

Well, Mike has bought it, and has a free weekend this weekend so will sink some hours into it and report back.  Having a single player game that doesn't seem  to have a driving plot line to it might be a thing I could get into....  I have plenty of single player games with plots that I am currently not playing.

So the PC version came out today.  Even fans of the game so far have said that the PS4 version doesn't run brilliant and have been eagerly anticipating how much better the PC version would run.

Well I've watched/listened to some of Day9.tv and Total Biscuit's live streams of the PC version and so far it sounds like the thing is not optimized at all. Day9 spent 30 minutes trying to get the thing to run at a reasonable framerate on a machine he claims he spent $1700 on and bought "last week."  I didn't get to hear/see much of TB's stream but he had a lot of gripes about the keyboard/mouse controls around movement and the UI (making it clear to me that even though Hello Games said they'd support PC years ago, this is a PS4 game with a PC port).  The UI does the Destiny thing of moving around as you move your cursor which I think helps/works on dual analog to reduce the amount of travel time the cursor has to do, but on mouse I guess is "nauseating" according to TB.

The best endorsement for the game I've seen so far is Markiplier gushing over it for an hour in the attached video.

My biggest concern with the game at this point is how "Minecraft + Elite" it looks.  And I don't mean the part of Minecraft I like which is building stuff, I mean the part where you're scouring landscapes for raw materials to fund/fuel the activities you want to actually do.  The combat doesn't sound super well done so the Elite comparison is probably unfair to Elite given how hard Frontier worked on their flight model.   Still I haven't played it, and I will admit it looks like a much better exploration space game than any others available so far, so we'll see?  So far I'm still holding off.

Yeah I'm hearing the samething. Markilplier's video I like since I get the feeling I'd have similar reaction of enjoying the exploration. The PC port being crap right now doesn't make me happy.

Also hearing that the multiplayer aspect really isn't there. It's still entirely possible it's a bug or people are just getting bad server lobbies or something but the developers continuing to be quiet on that front (despite even posting an update today) does not bode well. I mean, multiplayer by no means makes or break the game for me but it's a feature they've talked about that would be nice and it just not apparently being there is not cool.

I'm gonna hold off. Sounds like devs are working on patches to get things resolved but not worth grabbing at the moment. Once they fix their port I'll take a look again. Hopefully that'll be sooner rather than later. I do want to still give it a try but this is just a mess right now.

My hunch is the game may be on sale come Thanksgiving time and that might be the time to pick it up ;)

EDIT: Here's TB on the state of the PC Port

Dan Bull on No Man's Sky, PC version focused.

TB also cataloged the history of the game's hype for 40 minutes if you want something to listen to.
