I like how you once described your dad playing Sim City as cheating.

No.  Kitty's dad described my Dad (City Engineer as a profession for those who don't know) playing Sim City as cheating.  At the time I took offense. I get now that he meant it as a joke not as an offense.   I look up to my dad a lot so I got defensive.

Still, Joe's right.  Dad went to college for and then was 10+ years into a career of SimCity when I introduced him to the game with the SNES version in the early 90s.  To say he has an unfair advantage against most of us when it comes to urban planning and management would be accurate.  So I really shouldn't have been surprised when i came home after showing him the game for the first time and he already had a bustling metropolis in half the time it took me to build a measly city.

More Sim City 2013 videos.  Most pleased by the Disasters video. The third video is about the multiplayer features which I'm much more mixed on.

Edit: Fixed the third video link.

Definitely keeping this on my "to watch out for" list. I felt kinda "meh" about Sim City 4. This new one looks interesting though.

There was a live chat last week from GDC that I'll post if I ever find a recording of it, but they talked a bit more about a few things about the game:

  1. They got rid of Terraforming. In other words you can't build your own city maps from scratch.  So long as they provide enough interesting, different maps to work with I don't care (and it looks like they do).  I would actually prefer a healthy set of well made pre-built maps than the blank slates that Sim City 4 kept making me worth with.  If nothing else maybe it will discourage people from thinking the right way to play the game is to build on nothing but 100% flat cities (yeah this is a thing, look it up on YouTube).
  2. As part of this they seem to be getting rid of subterranean stuff in general.  This includes subways and explains why water pipes are automated.  I'm... disappointed but it's not critical.  In all honestly losing subways is worth having to not manually manage piping and this extra "under ground" layer, especially since we gain a simulated water table out of the deal.
  3. Multiplayer: Optional, despite what that video makes it look like.
  4. Regions are back.  While you can solo a region, you also can set a region to public and let anyone join and make cities in it, OR invite your friends to make cities in your region.  This sounds like it might be a fun way to do asynchronous multiplayer with people, and maybe make the region thing more fun since it's not up to you alone to manage and build up regions.

Flat cities are lame. Doesn't matter how productive they are! I remember two of my favorite cities I worked on in SC2k were an island system (set up kind of like Hawaii) and one on the side of a giant mountain.

So apparently the new SimCity will require Origin to play and has always online DRM. I guess this is some old news but didn't notice it until the SimCity team did an AMA on reddit and of course it was the biggest topic of discussion.

No doubt there will be Origin hate. I personally don't care, had to use it for ME3 and it was fine. However always online DRM is bullshit. This is SimCity. SIMCITY. Why oh why do we need to always be online for it? Sure, they're trying to add in some interesting multiplayer mechanics what with a "global" economy for your cities and regions to deal with but this should NOT be required. Actually from previous discussions, it sounds like some of these things are optional, so again why is this required? This is SimCity's first foray into multiplayer and they're already giving us a sour impression.

Here's Total Biscuit (aka CynicalBrit)'s WTF on the new Sim City.  This is game play footage of the press beta. Might inform those who are on the fence about the game. Highlight of the video "It's not my fault Cletus didn't know how to run the Power Plant!!"

There's a lot of hemming and hawing in the beginning, but they close out on a positive note.
