Chris Roberts, the creator of the Wing Commander series, revealed his new game today Star Citizen.  We don't know a whole lot about the game yet, and it's at least two years off still, but this will definitely be a return to deep space dog fighting, and this time powered by CryEngine 3.  Here's the trailer for you viewing pleasure.

What little we know about it is he wants to do a incrementally expanding multiplayer experience, that is not MMO, still small scale with your friends in that way, that also features a full single player/co-op campaign called "Squadren 42."  Game takes place in a new setting.

I'm kind of annoyed by websites calling it an MMO. I haven't heard anything saying it's going to be an MMO.

In the reveal session Chris spends a lot of time mentioning that he has been inspired by EVE and WoW, and he talks so much about multiplayer I can understand how someone who listened for only 5 seconds might come to that conclusion.  However in the Q&A after when they ask about how he's going to handle lag, he mentions that the multiplayer in execution will be much closer to CoD or Battlefield (lobby -> small instance of battle with a player cap) rather than an MMO, so clearly anyone saying so still didn't do their homework.

So I had heard RSI were in the Boston area, not directly at PAX, and showing a demo of the dog-fighting module at a hotel or something nearby. You can check out what was shown there and a lot of extra footage. Seeing this video though they make it look like they were actually at PAX on floor at somepoint and if so I'm extremely sad that I missed it.

Gonna be truthful, before watching this video I've been extremely excited about Star Citizen but I've kept my mind in super-cautiously-optimistic mode. I want this game to become reality more than anything but it bugs me how long it's taking and how much they're promising. After watching though, I'm getting super excited again. Dog-fighting looks to be pretty well in place for an alpha test which means actual gameplay to be had. I may need to start getting in on backing this so I can get access to this dog-fighting. Want this game to be real NAOW.

Yeah once that dogfight module comes out this will finally feel like a real game.  I like that this is coming along, but it is still clear they have a lot of work to do.  I hope they aren't too ambitions, but still very exciting.

So I finally installed Star Citizen. I've played about 30 minutes of the current build.  Really quick thoughts:

  • The game is still very in-development.  There's still a work to be done, even on the stuff they currently have. For example, you cannot currently re-map controls in game.  You need to find console commands to change some settings. For example when I started flying, my stick was rolling when I wanted to pitch. I needed to put a console command in to flip them.   Customizing controls currently requires you to edit a config file before loading the game, or using the console. I'm sure none of this will be in release, but that's just an idea of where they are.
  • What we do have right now however is already beautiful and incredibly immerse.  There's a certain amount of total cool that comes from just walking around your hangar, walking into your spaceship, and sitting down in the cockpit.  I cannot wait for when I can open up the hangar bay doors and fly the thing out of there.  The other thing I love is that walking around the hangar is done like an FPS game (WASD/mouse-look; hey they are using the Cry-engine after all).  This actually, at least for me, helps even more with immersion since once I am flying around I need to switch from my keyboard and mouse to my joystick and throttle.  I know this will sound silly, but that disconnect between vehicle and personal control methods just helps bring me into it even more.  It's so cool.
  • Flying around in space feels pretty good so far.  The game is beautiful, sounds good, and has all the requirements to dog fight.  I've got throttle control, afterburners, primary weapons, target tracking, radar.  I actually dig that I have a talking computer warning me things like loss of shields and what not.  So far the flying and fighting seems fine, though I'll need more ability to refine controls (specifically joystick sensitivity because sweet Jesus my joystick is sensitive).   Also I am a fan of the fact that although my HUD is primarily projected onto my cockpit glass, it still renders the cockpit, so I can see my character's hands, the joystick, various switches and gages, etc.  Again, helps with immersion.
  • If I have a concern with what I've seen with the game so far it is I am worried the developers will commit to simulation over gameplay.  In case it is not clear what I mean by that, right now it feels like there are certain decisions being made in favor of simulation accuracy over ease of gameplay.  For example, it is a good thing the ship computer tells me what my shield status is because I couldn't find that on my HUD during my little bit of play. The positioning of some HUD elements feel like they are based on my ship's cockpit, and that doesn't mean they are in easy to see places. The hangar could use more instruction on what we can do (though that might come later).  Again, the game is SUPER in progress so maybe this is something they'll address as they continue to work.

Patch 0.9 dropped yesterday.  Big step forward for the game though it is still very beta.  I still have to put in console commands before my stick works correctly though I only have to do that once per major patch.  We still don't have any of the persistent universe stuff, but they did add co-op to their vs-bots gauntlet mode in Arena Commander, and (I think) the ability to do private dogfights with specific people.  They also added racing, which on its own I'm meh about but it does give us our first taste of atmospheric flight.  It also, now that I am trying to navigate a fixed course rather than open space, makes me really aware of just how much the game calculates for physics.  If I was generating a ton of thrust one direction and then suddenly turn my ship to the starboard, my ship's engines have to output enough thrust in that direction before I stop sliding in my old direction.  Afterburners are a big help there.

So yeah, I think I'm the only person who backed this, but if anyone else did back it to the point of having Arena Commander, let me know if you ever want to sortie.

In other news, one of the things that makes me excited to play in this game's persistent universe is all the work the folks at RSI are doing to make it feel alive, before we can ever play in it.  Especially these ads for starships.  This most recent one for the Origin racing ship is done in the style of the show Top Gear and is pretty darn great.

I'm also throwing on the one for the MISC Freelancer which is a fun commercial too.

One of the real bummers with the game right now is that the only ships you can fly are the one(s) included in your crowdfunding package.  At launch, when the economy is in, they promise all ships will be for sale with in game money, but for now it's just me and my Origin 300i

Our first look at the First Person Shooter Module of Star Citizen.  The ground stuff looks like it could be smoother. The Zero-G stuff is interesting though and it's still interesting that this is being wrapped into a space-combat game.  I'm waiting to see how this and the dog-fighting modules are going to connect back to their open-world module.

I can't wait until Star Citizen reaches a point where I can start acquiring ships with in-game currency.

My pledge package (yes I supported the game before it had a Kickstarter) came with the Origin Jumpworks 300i. This guy:

300i

She seems a sufficient stand-alone ship, bigger than a starfighter but still a single-seater, one-pilot machine.  The site describes it as a "touring" ship, good for seeing the galaxy with.  There a few variants of it, a racing variant, the 325a which is built for interception.  I kinda wish I had gotten the Aegis Dynamics Avenger, which based off $value is only a little bit better than the 300i, but not as good as the 325a, but it looks so cool!

However today I decided to take a look at the 890 Jump, which falls under the class of "Luxury Touring."  Don't get me wrong, I don't want to fight pirates in this thing but LOOK AT IT

LOOK AT THE INTERIORS

IT COMES WITH ITS OWN RUNABOUT

Why play a game where you can show off your epic war tiger and its battle armor when you could be earning this?  That you can walk around in first person, invite your friends to take ride in as you tour the galaxy?  I mean I'd just hang out on this thing while sitting in vent BSing.

I really hope they come up with fun ways to earn in-game currency when this game reaches that point because I want so many of these ships just to have and play with.  I don't want to have to spend hundreds of dollars on them.

So I thought I'd try and make a Star Citizen video.  This is also another video that I recorded with xSplit, which I don't have a paid account for so I guess I am stuck with that watermark for now.  Sorry about that.  Anyway I hope you enjoy!
