It's getting harder and harder for me to not start believing there's some games media conspiracy to tear down Star Citizen.

All year long it's been gaming sites and bloggers trying to throw their hat into a ring about how doomed this game is.  What still drives me nuts is they keep talking about Star Citizen like "where is it?" and every time they do I keep wanting to scream "THEY DO A WEEKLY WEB SHOW WITH CURRENT PROJECT STATUS! IT IS SO LONG YOU GET BORED PART WAY THROUGH! THEY MAKE MONTHLY POSTS ABOUT THE CURRENT STATE OF THE FPS MODULE!  WHY DOES EVERYONE ACT LIKE ITS CLOAK AND DAGGER OVER THERE?!?!?!"

Seriously I can tell you more about the current state of Star Citizen than I could about Elite and Elite is released.

If some of the hearsay from former employees is true then that's pretty damning about the corporate culture, but this just feels to me like someone is making click bait by dragging Derek Smart up again.

EDIT UPDATE: Here's a reddit post started by a Cloud Imperium Games employee speaking against said post.

I hate that this game has become a witch hunt.

Update on The Escapist article:  Star Citizen has actually sent them a formal complaint for the publishing of slandarous materials. This is something important that I think anyone still reading The Escapist should maybe be aware of.

So while I was in Japan, "CitizenCon 2015" happened.  There was a big long presentation which went more or less like this:

  • Sandi Gardner makes note of community support for her in face of The Escapist hit piece against her
  • Showed off the upcoming "Crusader v0" which is a planet in the first functional star system Star Citizen will get.  Game play showed multi-crew ship, a mission, some PvP, more quantum jumping.
  • Showed off the new Star Map which will show the playable part of the Galaxy in Star Citizen.  This map is live now and can be explored online.
  • Update on the Saitek Star Citizen joystick
  • New Star Fighter, the Saber, and a limited time military ships sale.
  • And a bunch of Squadron 42 stuff including a cast list and our first in-engine demo of some story stuff, and in-engine cutscene.

Now you can watch the big long presentation (I did) but if you don't have 2 hours, then at least watch the intro trailer for Squadron 42 and the Press Demo for Arena Commander Alpha v2.0.  That's Gary Oldman playing the admiral who is speaking and that cutscene is in engine not pre-rendered.  Now that makes me wonder how much of a beast of a machine we'll need for that but supposedly that's the goal.

For me I can't wait to hear more about Squadron 42.  Again I backed the game for a new Single Player Wing Commander game, so them nailing Squadron 42 is more important to me than getting the MMO stuff right.  That said with how much Elite I've played I clearly would really really like it if PU would be amazing too.  Still, really happy to start seeing SQ42 stuff finally.

It is worth noting that once AC v2 goes up they talked about maybe putting a way to earn Credits into the game.  I feel like that'll be the point I start playing this over Elite, especially if I can spend those credits meaningfully, even if we are temporarily locked to one star system.

Star Citizen introduces Mark Hamill's character for Squadron 42!

There are also several anniversary related ship sales incoming, if there are any 'limited time only' ships you wanted to pick up.

It's not.  You don't really buy ships in Star Citizen.  It's the kickstarter that never stopped. Different pledge packages come with different ships.

I'm not saying its not absurd, I'm just explaining why.

Every ship they sell now will be available for in game money later.

This was not included in the Mark Hamil Star Citizen stuff, but PC Gamer did an interview with him that wasn't just about Star Citizen, but also some of his other roles and being a Sci-Fi actor in general, including an aside about getting the Joker role.  Good watch IMO.

EDIT: fixed video link

I didn't watch the entire thing but there is an amusing part start at 11:50 where he talks about keeping Vader is Luke's father (spoilers!) a secret and then does a spot on impression of Harrison Ford's reaction to finding out.

Edit: You fixed your link so I'll remove it here.

So, in the Star Citizen equivalent of "PTR" (what they call PTU or "Public Test Universe") is Arena Commander 2.0.  This update includes support for multi-crew ships, allowing those who own the Constellation and some of the multi-seat fighters and bombers to bring other players along and for those players to have roles on the ship.  As I understand it presently, since AI co-pilots aren't in the game yet, flying something the like Constellation is kinda a wash since you don't have anyone to man its turrets... yet.

Now what is more exciting to me is that the game adds a new "Universe" mode.  This is the first (albiet very small) taste we've gotten of how Persistent Universe (hearafter PU) is going to work.

Quick refresher of Star Citizen lingo:

  • Star Citizen refers to the entire game and all of its modes and parts.
  • Squadron 42 (SQ42) refers to the upcoming single-player campaign in the style of the old Wing Commander games.  This includes interacting with NPCs between missions, and will include FPS segments as well.
  • Persistent Universe (PU) refers to the persistent massively multiplayer universe mode, or in other words the one more like Elite:Dangerous.  You can actually check out the interactive star map of the PU now.  If you haven't it's a pretty nifty website. You can tell from this map that the PU will include a much smaller universe than Elite:Dangerous, but its locations look like they will be more developed, fleshed out, and unique, and far less procedural.  If nothing else, every star appears to have a name that isn't based on Earth-based star charts.
  • Arena Commander (AC) refers to what is in the game presently.  It is to be thought of as series of simulations that we are indulging in before the game becomes more fully fleshed out.  AC 1.0 only includes PvP match making, the Horde Mode style Vanduul Swarm which pits a team of up to four pilots against 20 waves of alien fighters, the Murray Cup racing mode, and Free Flight mode for testing and goofing off.

AC 2.0 will include a light test version of PU.
  • Star Marine refers to a first person shooter focused module like Arena Commander.  Star Marine was supposed to be released this summer, but the team ran into serious development issues reconciling their goals with Star Marine, the CryEngine, and the larger game.  The TL:DR; was shortcuts that FPS games normally take take were hurting control and animation with how your character interacted with ships and zero-G, which is important to the rest of the game's vision.  At this point I'm not sure if we're going to get a Star Marine module anymore or if it will make more sense to bake its features into AC 2.0.
  • Social Module refers to the AR features they wanted to add to the game to help with player to player interactions, including chat, contact lists, etc.  A version of this is in AC 1.0 now including one explorable landing site called ArcCorp.  You can't really do whole lot there yet other than look around, dance and talk to other players, and die by crashing very fragile buggies into walls.  It's okay though you'll respawn in the hospital in seconds... for now.

Okay so PTU 2.0 has PU elements in it.  Right now the area is locked to one star system and looks something like this (put together by a fan):

You start in Port Olisar, orbiting Crusader, in a small, single room hotel sorta thing.  You can wander around Port Olisar in first person, but there isn't much of interest there. You can however turn on your AR system to access the one standing repeatable quest/job/mission in AC 2.0 at the moment: repairing comm relays damaged by pirates.  You just have to click the mission and you HUD lights up with all the comm relays to fix.  You can't fix them from Port Olisar though... you'll need your ship.

You travel to the central room and approach one of the terminals.  The game then draws on your SC account to figure out which ships you currently have access to (see your pledge package(s)).  You select a ship, and then game tells you which landing strut and pad the ship is at.  Then you need to walk through an airlock, to your ship, where it will be landed and waiting for you.  You can also get others to hop in your ship if you have a two seater.  I've seen videos of folks bringing down a constellation and then spamming chat for co-pilots.

Once in your ship you can travel to any of the locations on the above map, or the numerous comm relays.  It sounds like if you want you could fly to each of these locations using your normal drives.  You have landing speeds which seem to get cut off at 50 m/s, combat speeds which cuts off depending on your ship (my 300i maxes out at about 250 m/s) and then you can enter cruising speed which does about 1000 m/s, takes a bit to reach, and your control in this mode is pretty limited at best.  You can also activate your quantum drive which uses fuel.  Hit the button to bring up an interface to select a place of interest, and then hit the jump button and your ship will jump right to that location.  The whole thing feels far more seamless and easy than dealing with supercruise in Elite, and more immerse since you don't have the obvious dropping in and out of different instances.   I mean sure Quantum travel feels like you're warping to a location but that's also kinda the point ya know?

The relays will have security ships trying to fight off pirates.  The Security ships will talk to you, with VO not text, telling you they got this covered, when they really could use your help.  Fight off the pirates and the security ships will ask if you would EVA into the relay and restart it.  Hit control+F and you'll get out of your pilot seat and can float into the relay in Zero-G, activate the computer terminal, and the relay is reset.

From there you can hop back in your ship and just sorta explore.  There's repair pads you can land at to get fixed up (if you can get landing right... Everytime they do a major release my controls get reset and I don't play SC enough yet to have the memorized so at the moment "landing" for me turns into "Oh shit I'm bouncing off the pad again" a lot). There's trading posts that are closed at the moment but still talk to you when you approach.  There's also the security station Karaesh which sounds like is becoming the unofficial Southshore of this build.  If you can manage to get there, there are rifles and other bad ass things for you to pick up for yourself, but everyone else is also going there to pick up guns and is eager to use them.  I've read stories on reddit of people dropping into Karaesh and instantly getting mixed up in massive free for alls.

There's no credits in AC 2.0 at the moment, so all of this is still for your sandbox goofing off pleasure.  Dying sends you back to Port Olisar and you can respawn your ship at no cost.  There's no anti-griefing systems in place at the moment, so every other player you run into is a wild west of "is this guy friendly" or "is this guy going to try and kill me and steal my ship because yes you can do that, at least until I respawn and requested it from Port Olisar again."  There's also no cargo systems yet... though that hasn't stopped people from making one up.  Attached below is "the Great Noddle Run" where a player stole a vending machine from one space station and took it back to Port Olisar.  This is clearly another "just to do it" thing, but it's pretty funny.

I can't wait for AC 2.0 to reach the general public.  This is one of the biggest proofs we have gotten of "see, this game is happening, it's just taking a really long time because it's stupid ambitious."

EDIT: Random 'pics or it didn't happen' kinda stuff - player's ship was destroyed but he escaped and needed a pick up:

Also, attached below, apparently there's a mission you can pick up that ends with you getting to listen to this creepy blackbox...

I'm irritated to inform you that Star Citizen is doing something I think is pretty stupid on February 14th.

When I backed this game, I backed it for a new single player Wing Commander style space dogfighter campaign.  The MMO-like game was a strech-goal, a side feature, something they wanted to do but didn't know if they could.  Over time Star Citizen got some much beyond its initial pledge goal that people talk about the MMO like it was always the goal, like it was always the game, and that Squadron 42, the single player part, was optional side stuff.  I backed the game for both things.

After Feb 14th 2016 you won't be able to.

At the December livestream, we announced that Squadron 42 and Star Citizen will be split into two separate packages in the near future. To update on this: the split will occur onFebruary 14th. Squadron 42 will be available as either a stand alone game or an optional addon for Star Citizen rather than be included by default. If you want to lock in both games for the lowest possible price, consider pledging before this deadline. You can learn more about Squadron 42, our thrilling single-player adventure, here.

(source)

So while I absolutely am still of the mindset that if you are interested in Star Citizen, you should wait until there's more of a game to play with your money, I am irritated to inform you that if you wait until after Feb 14th, the cost of getting both the MMOish part (Star Citizen, Arena Commander, Star Marine) and the Single Player Story Campaign (Squadron 42) is going to increase as they will be treated as isolated packages.

Now I could spin this as a positive.  It might mean that the cost of each of these parts on their own will go down, meaning people not interested in Star Citizen can save and just buy Squadron 42, or people only interested in Star Citizen can skip Squadron 42.  Personally I see it as a bum deal since to me Squadron 42 has always been part of the package, if not the most important part of the package.

Anyway, take this information and do what you will with it.  I'm not happy to deliver it.
