Cool video a fan put together using gameplay footage of what's currently in the game and the current launcher music.

I want to say "I need to get back in this game."  In truth fuck me I have too many games to play already.

So over the Holidays, RSI and CIG released this hour long gameplay video from Squadron 42.  It showcases how all of the parts they are building for Persistent Universe (the MMO part that combines spaceflight, fps, and all the other systems at work) are going into even the single player version of the game.  It features a lengthy walk through of your first carrier, face-to-face interactions with NPCs, multiple in-engine cutscenes, some flight exploration, some flight combat, atmospheric entry, almost Descent-Like ill-advised flying fighters through narrow corridors, and then a landing followed by a base infiltration on foot complete with light stealth elements, gun-play, and a "turn the power back on" puzzle.

On the one hand it is very impressive seeing all of this coming together in a single game.  On the other hand this is a "vertical slice" which is to say a very pre-planned chunk of game, and they are in control of the drivers seat.  Who knows what bugs could occur in actual play, how hard any of this would be in actual execution, and if the quality on display here is at all representative of a standard mission on SQ42.

I do find it interesting that, based on my own observation, it seems the entire thing is being played with the mouse.  If you sit through it you may see why I've raised concerns in the past about how playing this with a fancy HOTAS might be more of a pain in the ass than just keyboard-and-mouse, even if you get less precise flying out of the deal.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - at this point if this game fails its because they became Icarus:  reached too far and too high for what even their huge crowd-funded budget can allow.  As it stands you can see during this demo numerous points where their own demo machine hangs up during loading transitions and other points, and I'm sure they're running this thing on one of the strongest machines they have at their offices.

Still, good to see some life out of SQ42.  During the Holidays the Star Citizen Alpha 3.0 patch dropped, adding planet landings and the beginnings of economic gameplay to the game.  I hope to make the time sometime soon ti give the thing a download and see how Alpha-As-Fuck these new features are.

I am finally trying to get caught up on Citizen Con content from this year.  Here's the big 1 hour and 40 minute Keynote gameplay demo that shows off:

  • Waking up in a "hab" in a city
  • Getting around said city, including metro transit
  • Ordering and drinking whiskey at a bar
  • Getting a job from a shady guy
  • A uncalibrated attempt at their live "Face Over IP" tech
  • Taking the metro to a spaceport
  • Taking off from hanger
  • Atmospheric flight over a planet with flora (no fauna yet)
  • Touch down
  • Botched platforming
  • Pulling server blades out of a crashed satellite
  • Having your ship blown up while it's parked and calling a friend for pick up
  • A new dropship class ship
  • Another great Ship Ad
  • Shooting AA guns
  • Dropping combat vehicles from a flying dropship
  • Underground FPS segment
  • Turn in
  • More trains
  • Buying ships in game

I continue to worry that this game is going too HAM on immersion, that the wait between moments of engaging gameplay will be too long between waiting for trams, manipulating objects in environment, dealing with insurance, etc - but damn if the level of polish and detail on the visuals and concepts continues to be impressive.

ALSO: Squadron 42 trailer - the game I actually wanted when i backed this thing.
