I highly recommend you update your video drivers before playing, especially if you're running nVidia cards. I saw a marked performance improvement from my rig after doing so, especially during one of the bigger cutscenes so far.

Also, when you do pick up the game, my character name for friending is Vergil.261. Please do not RealID friend me.

There was an update for Radeon drivers last night (26th), so everyone may as well check.

EDIT: Don't RealID me either. I'll post my in game name once I have it.

I just want to make a quick post and declare this topic "Spoiler Free Zone," so that we can have discussions regarding tactics, strategy, multiplayer, maps, etc here. I'm going to create another topic for lore/story stuff.

Just as an FYI: Blizzard is maintaining a web-version of your SC2 profile that you can view from the net. You can sign in to your Battle.net account at the StarCraft2 battle.net site and then click on your name to see it. From there you can view your stats, achievements, etc.

As an example here's mine. It'd be sweet if they formated this to be "feedable" in some way...

Update:Nope, haven't found a way to consume data from it yet, but I DID use the power of firebug to find where battle.net is storing its avatars. Here's two sets I uncovered:
SC2 avatars part 1
SC2 avatars part 2

Here, I made an animated .gif about the "Kill box" defense I was talking about on vent last night. It really only makes the most sense if you are trying to defend multiple attack vectors.

animated gif explaining the difference between choke-point defense and self-built killboxes

As stated, this idea was inspired by actual castle design in which you purposely design your front gate to be easily rammed open, but then have it lead into a large box with no roof protected by a second, harder to break gate. This opening is then lined by archers who hail arrows down upon the trapped infantry, murdering the entire group who first invades. You therefore have successfully created a "kill-box" in which the defenders have terrain advantage and the attackers will quickly find themselves further ahead using another means into the castle.

So I watched all the day two games from the European SC2 "Showmatch" that Blizzard was hyping on the Starcraft 2 Homepage. Some interesting play at work, makes me excited to see what happens as the professional scene for SC2 really heats up.

Before I start, if you're interested in watching the matches yourself, you can view them here, though I personally recommend you download the flv files like I did and watch them in Media Player Classic. Much higher quality video that way.

Anyway, the games were between "TheLittleOne" or "TLO" as Terrans vs Madfrog as Zerg. It was a tight match up, especially on day two where they had to play all 5 games of their best-of-5 to determine the winner. From watching the matches I learned a number of interesting things.

  • So far the professional Terran scene has gotten over the loss of vultures by replacing them with vikings. Vikings are the new partner to siege tanks in professional play, and vs Zerg where this allows sweet overlord hunting as well as drone harassment, it's pretty clear why that's true.

  • Terrans have access to all kinds of crazy tactics by going for an early gas gyser. TLO manages to switch up what he's throwing at Madfrog game after game with little alteration to his build order.

  • Even with all that slickness a Terran player can whip up from that build order, you still can't afford to sit back vs Zerg. Zerg are still the most terrifying race in the game if you allow them to get a serious economic advantage. If left unchecked, you cannot stop the swarm, and that's the way it should be :)

  • Mules are like one of the most important tools the Terrans have. The bonus they current give to economy cannot be ignored, and they help a injured Terran play recover from his/her losses in record time.

  • Corruptors are not Viking counters. Mutalisks are. This puts Terrans in a tight spot if a Zerg player rushes for mutas as the best air-to-air counter the terrans have is Battlecruisers, which are hard to get up in droves.

  • Unlike in the beta, Thors seem to be pretty solid Muta counters now.

  • Never, ever, discount the zergling. With all of the new enhancements to the "surround AI" mixed with improved speed, a well microed Zergling swarm can go a long way... unless of course you're fighting Hellions.

  • Roaches, while maybe not OP, are still VERY POWERFUL, especially once they have the speed and move-while burrowed upgrades. Unless you're entirely airborne, don't discount a swarm of roaches.

  • Commentators don't know everything. Sometimes they are proven wrong during the very match they're trying to talk about :)

Here's a video I found about the way SC2 unit path finding works, especially on air units, that you can use to try and minimize aoe damage for your air units called "the magic box" - very educational.

Of course, this is really for players who gotten to the point that they're ready to start microing their battles at a competitive level.
