Well reading this certainly didn't help my opinion of Blizzard as of late: The Sacrifices of Starcraft II made in the name of E-Sports.

I understand Browder's point for some of these changes, though not all.  He is right that one of my biggest gripes with Supreme Commander (both of them) is that it can be really hard to tell one unit for another from a distance until they start fireing.  You kind of have to play in the tactical "Zooomed the fuck out so everything is icons" view when the battles get huge to keep units straight.

That being said most of it is BS.  Can't make Ultralisks too big because we'd hide units behind it?  That's easily counterable by display health bars, or giving the player easier access to camera controls so they can rotate AROUND said Ultralisk.   The bit about too many unit types is also BS.  If DoWII can be considered any kind of success in e-Sport with that many units, why go smaller?  Additionally, take a look at LoL or DotA or HoN - the total number of heroes/champs in those games apparently exceeds the total number of units in Starcraft II, and yet THOSE games are doing pretty damn well as e-Sports (especially LoL right now).

I'd be okay with all of this if at the end of the day they'd launched a balanced multiplayer experience.  They didn't.  I have yet to hear of a SCII tourney that didn't end up being Zerg vs Terran in the final match and (though I think it's no longer true) the US community still thinks Terran is far and away more OP than either of the other two.

You know what this feeling reminds me of?  1999 - when I quit playing Chrono Cross as was disappointed with Parasite Eve 2 - that was the year I'd decided SquareSoft had stopped being the golden, infallable game developer it was and was on the road to shit town.  To be fair I went back to beat, and eventually like those games, but I haven't finished a Square game since FF9, so yeah.

Point is, Blizzard seems to be on this track.  You all know my feelings on WoW, and though I still absolutely adore (and highly recommend) StarcraftII's single player campaign, I'm growing increasingly concerned about their approach to multiplayer as of late.  At this rate by the time Diablo 3 comes out, we're gonna play it and go "Wait... did these guys even see Torchlight?  Why does it feel like I'm playing Diablo 2.5 instead of this sequel we've waited 10 years for?"

I almost feel like comparing Blizz to Gamefreak when it comes to Pokemon games. As pointed out when ever a new Pokemon comes out, the game is essentially the same as the last but with some updated features with new units and moves. Does it make it fun? Of course it's still fun and the enhancements are great. As Joystiq mentioned in there review of the latest Pokemon that I think almost applies to Blizz's sequels: Why are they so afraid of letting this franchise evolve? (I see what they did thar) But seriously, I enjoyed Starcraft 2 but it just feels like Starcraft 2.5 HD. I certainly have fun playing the game and it feels like an improvement but it's not an evolution of the genre like Starcraft 1 was. I understand the need to not disappoint people, but you're fucking Blizzard. Take a leap of faith.

Finally got off my ass and beat SC2 over the weekend. The ending didn't really surprise me, though the last mission on normal did please me in that I finally felt a little bit harassed by the AI. In retrospec I definitely should have played the game on hard difficulty instead of normal. But since SC2 is down time to decide if the next single player game I play will be Mass Effect, Half Life 2, or Fallout 3!

Hard choice! I vote for Mass Effect though. After that HL2 if only cause it's been out forever. But don't worry about needing to catch up for HL2: Ep3. You could play through all 3 of those games 5 times before it'll come out.

To quote Tycus, "Hell, it's about time."

Glad you were able to make it through!  And yeah, I definitely agree about the AI - I am glad I played through it on Hard.

As for the ending, I dunno, I was kinda surprised they actually went through with the ending they were setting up - turning Kerrigan into a human again is ballzy after how popular she is as the Queen of Blades. I figured she'd have some sorta Dues-Ex Machina to get out of it because she's Kerrigan.  But I'll not continue there as I already wrote my thoughts on the ending.

As for what to play next I agree, get to Mass Effect.  While Fallout and Half Life are awesome, they do not have sequels on the horizon to worry about getting spoilers from etc, where as Mass Effect 3 is well on it's (although delayed) way. I also would Do Mass Effect first, Fallout 2nd, Half-Life third, though I will pass along MonkeyLord's advice regarding Fallout:  take a break on the franchise between Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas.  They are both fun games and different in many ways, but they are similar enough that you can start to experience burn out if you go from one right to the other.

I don't even own New Vegas at this time so that's not an issue right now. Anyway, as for the end to SC2 I really wasn't surprised by it. It went down just about how I expected it would for the past half dozen or so missions. Kerrigan doesn't look totally human to me even now. Definitely closer but not fully human again. I think it is setup for her working cooperatively with the other races against the hybrids. Which is a damned shame because I liked it better when it was three opposing races that occasionally cooperated against each other! Blah. I kinda wanna play some original SC on Game Night.

Yeah there are parts of Starcraft, War3, and Starcraft II that make me wonder if Blizzard only knows how to write one kind of story now.  First you had War3 aping plot point after plot point from Starcraft with Arthas and Silvanys kinda filling the role of Kerrigan at various points in it's storyline, and the way the Night Elves defeated Archimonde in the end was very end of Starcraft 1 IMO, right down to "mystical energy summoned by the oldest race destroys giant evil monster."

Now you have Starcraft II, wherein they Hybrids are the new Burning Legion, Zeratul is now Mediev, and the end plot will force the three races to band together against some impossibly over-powering force we'll never get to play as.  SNNNNOOOOOORREEEEEE

Oh well.  Starcraft II:Wings of Liberty still had enough Raynor vs Dominion meat on it to feel different enough for my tastes, but I do have my worries about the other two campaigns.  'Cause yeah, if this makes "Playing Zerg" into "I'm good guy Zerg" nneeaaauugghh... that's not what Starcraft is about.  The back of the Starcraft I CD case says a forgotten tagline "The only Allies are Enemies."  Starcraft should stay that way.  Good Night.

Yeah, the parallels are definitely obvious. Not to say I didn't enjoy SC2's campaign, because I really did and definitely will pick up the Zerg campaign whenever it is released. (Though I am still miffed that it is broken up like this.) It just really seams they're stuck in their tropes for plot like they're stuck in their arenas for e-sports.

Just in case, for some reason, you thought "Emperor of Terran" SlayerS_BoxeR was done when Starcraft II happened, here's a reminder that he's still playing and is still awesome.

Anyone remember that World of Starcraft mod?  The one Blizzard sent a S&D to over the name, then invited them over to Blizzard HQ to tell them how much they <3 their mod?

Yeah so this trailer just dropped.  Cannot wait for this to come out!
