This week's APM.  Nothing as amazing as last week's but I do like the number 1 games' answer to Blizzard's recent nerf to Ghosts' ability to deal with Broodlords.  Brilliant.

So there's a tournament going on in France right now called "Iron Squid."  Never heard of it you say?  Me neither, but check out the people who are in it:

  • SlayerS_Boxer
  • MarineKingPrime
  • EG PuMa
  • IM MvP
  • EG Idra
  • Slayers_MMA
  • M Stephano
  • and more

And the games themselves are casted by TotalBiscut and & Apollo.

They are still in the Group Stage, and already some big names have been knocked out.  I'm going to import my favorite set of matches so far but if you're interested in watching some solid Starcraft for free, keep an eye out for this tournament.

Star Battle.  Custom Map for Starcraft II.  This actually looks pretty neat!  We should give it 2v2 a try sometime!

More IronSquid Tournament.  Just this past Sunday this wonderful Protoss vs Terran occured vs SlayerS_MMA and MouzMana.  This game is part of the Show #9 set which also has included a ZvZ match between Stephano and ZeneX Life, as well as some other match ups I haven't watched yet.  Loving this tourney so far, I'll probably end up posting more links to some of my favorite games so far later on.

Group C is now done, and so far the players going to the bracket phase are:

  • Marine King Prime - Korean - Terran
  • EG PuMa - Korean - Terran
  • SK MC - Korean - Protoss
  • TSL Symbol - Korean - Zerg
  • Slayers_MMA - Korean - Terran
  • NSH_Jjakji - Korean - Terran

There's one group left, so far all the foreigners are being destroyed by Koreans as one might expect.  That said, there were some good games in this tournament that make it look like some of the foreigners are catching up.  In fact, MMA is advancing because French Zerg player Stephano had to forfeit his matches against MMA, giving the Korean Terran player an easy 2-0 win and an automatic ride to the bracket phase.

Attached is Stephano vs Jjakji, a ZvT where Jjackji pulls off in game 2 (starting about 29min 10sec) is a build I would love to be able to execute myself.  Banshees are one of my favorite units in SCII Terrans, and I forgot how much they initially were what made switch from Protoss to Terran during the beta.

The "Round of 8" at Iron Squid is done, and the final four players going to Paris have been decided.  I have to say I am both real sad and really excited about the results.

First, my biggest disappointment is SK MC vs Fnatic aLive (PvT).  SK MC played in a way during the Group stages that made me thinking that Protoss might actually have a shot in the game's current meta after being the worst race in tournament performance for quite some time.  Watching aLive spank him in the early game on the other hand just confirms what I've felt since the beta - Tier 1 Protoss is too weak vs Terran in Starcraft II.  Blizzard continues to expect the Protoss players to pay a premium for units that just cannot kill Terran units at Tier 1 for almost no work.  Marines respond to orders so fast now that they can kite Zealots and never get caught or suffer a loss.  Mauraders are a toe-to-toe fighter against stalkers, except that Stalkers cost 25 more minerals, 25 more gas, and take 15 more seconds to build.  Sure, Protoss can get to tier 2 and which point charge makes zealots real good vs Terran infantry and blink micro can do amazing things to the bio ball as well, but tier 2 is also when the Terrans then get Medivacs and stimpack, and those two things come together to counter the protoss advantage.  As those games evidenced, even when SK MC started landing PRO psionic storms, once Terran Infantry are level 3 armor, level 3 weapons, the Psi storms do nothing, NOTHING, not a single unit dies to a single storm.  For the amount of work it takes to land that storm, that's stupid beyond belief, especially given storm already has a natural counter from the terrans in Ghost snipe.    Watching SK MC lose those games in the end was like watching the horrible state Protoss are in Starcraft II epitomized in 5 agonizing to watch struggles.    I don't blame aLive, clearly he knows how to play the match up very well, but I just don't see how SK MC could have won his games in the end.  It's pathetic, it's sad, and it makes me want to not even look at SCII again until Heart of the Swarm.  How far the mighty Protoss have fallen.

That depressing note aside, the rest of the "round of 8's" games were pretty interesting.  IM Nestea had a pretty cheese heavy game with NSH Jjakji that was entertaining to hear the commentators try to deal with.  SlayerS MMA got a solid series of revenges against EG PuMa after PuMa was partially responsible for SlayerS_Boxer getting knocked out of the group stages, fun TvT there.

The biggest deal though was Marine King Prime vs TSL Symbol.  A Terran vs Zerg where nearly everyone expected Marine King to continue his swing of dominance, Symbol did the unthinkable - he swept MKP 3-0.  The biggest upset of the tournament.  Seriously, if you're wondering how to win vs Terran as Zerg, WATCH THESE GAMES.  I've attached the YouTube vid to this post, start watching the video at around 10:20, otherwise you're catching the last matches of NesTea vs Jjakji.

Anyway, that's the tourney so far.  The finals start tomorrow.  I'm hoping at this point that Symbol can go all the way after his major upset and all my favorite players (SK MC, Marine King, Boxer) being out of the tourney at this point.

Well Iron Squid is taking forever to make youTube videos of it, but the finals were this last weekend.  You can view the full bracket here. The short of it:  Slayers_MMA (T) took down FantiC aLive (T) 3 games to 2, and underdog TSL Symbol (Z) took down the "God of the Zerg" IM NesTea (Z) 3 games to 1.  Honestly I want to see videos of that ZvZ because NesTea was hella favored for that match and I want to see what Symbol pulled out.

After that you had the finals between Slayers_MMA (T) and TSL Symbol (Z). This match looked very one sided towards Slayers_MMA overall, though TSL Symbol has a few good wins.  The final was a best of 7 instead of best of 5, and MMA won in the end 4games to 2.  At the end of the day, Symbol just couldn't contain MMA's drops.  As soon as he tried to get more than 3 base, MMA was up in his grill with drops that kept Symbol from leaving his base, stopping him from making pressure, and allowing MMA to turn around what could have been losses.   MMA just outplayed Symbol and earned the win, and Symbol kinda had to "cheese" to get the 2 wins he got.

So another SC2 tournament over, Terran takes the win, Team SlayerS Terrans specifically, win.

So just as I'm still huffy about Protoss not making it?  I have learned today that 3 of the four finalists in GSL are Protoss.  Perhaps it's time to start watching more PartinG, HerO, or Squirtle.  I do think it's nuts that the guy in that video are complaining about Protoss needing a nerf, especially for ZvP.  Stephano already has that machup beaten.  Oh well.

Sounds like in reaction to LoL becoming the most watch eSport in Korea, all the professional gaming channels and tournaments are going to be switched over to Starcraft II.

There was a big conference between Korean tournament companies and Blizzard and they all decided to ALL IN on Starcraft II.  It sounds like now that SC2 actually has an international competitive presence that SC:BW really doesn't, Korea want in on that pie rather than stay behind. Also the original misgivings were "can SC2 measure up" and while it might not be as good of a game yet, it's already a more popular game, so why not?

My source of the news is Gamebreaker.  Video attached.

To be honest? I think the delay in switching over had less to do with concerns about whether SC2 would be a better competitive game (though that was a valid concern), and more to do with the whole nasty business between Blizzard and KeSPA (Korean e-Sports Association).

IIRC, at one point, most if not all major Korean Starcraft events were being run through KeSPA, and by extension most pro players were in that league. Blizzard's branch into the Korean e-Sports market (GomTV) tried starting things and around the time of SC2's release KeSPA threatened to ban any players that played in GomTV events. The idea was to cut Blizzard out of the profits and - given SC1's playable-over-LAN nature, they could legitimately do that.

Being officially licensed, GomTV was given access to LAN-enabled SC2 setups specifically for tournament events. And around here is where my knowledge grows too fuzzy for me to even hazard a guess as to what happened next. But yeah, if Korea's pro-scene is moving from SC1 to SC2, then my guess is this whole business undrelying it must have been sorted out one way or another.
