Platinum Game's next title is a team up with Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami to make a 3rd person shooter for PS3 and 360. They're calling it a "Third person action shooter" because they're trying to emphasize that it has the over-the-top moves you'd come to expect from some of Platinum's other games, a distinction that I personally think is lame but whatever.

Discussing bad labels aside, the game it self looks tons of fun to me. The plot is so so and the characters are alright, but it looks like it could be a fast and intense and fun shooting game. If they can bring just part of Bayonetta's heat to this experience, I think it'll be worth checking out in the fall.

Here's some game play and an interview from Gametrailers:

"Stay Frosty! I want you ready to shoot the second you see the slightest thing resembling a fucking roomba!"

God I love this game.

Finished this game. There's a sort of side conversation I'd love to have about it, but it's so seeped in spoilers I won't have it here.

Final Verdict: If you like Devil May Cry/Bayonetta/God of War/etc, and you also like Gears of War/Uncharted (for the shooting), you should pick up this game. What's more important too is how much more you like the action games than the shooter games, since victory on the game is really less about "can you shoot things" as it is "can you properly manage your suit's various abilities to lead to win."

That's not to say that shooting accurately isn't important - it is - but the bullet-time mechanic along with others the suit provides gives you a way around it. Many times in the game I encountered foes who were difficult to shoot, either because they had small weak points, or they moved about very fast, or were going to destroy my face if I didn't kill them before they got to me. Going into the bullet-time mode made it easy to pick off those few targets, drop out before I over heated, and drop back into cover to do it again. Master this stuff well enough and after awhile you start to feel like a kind of shooter bad-ass that Marcus Fenix wishes he could be by proxy of leaping about from cover to cover, blowing enemies apart before they knew what hit them.

Loved the story. It's not deep thinking Shakespeare or nothing, but I am the kinda guy who can enjoy a "action flick" style plot so long as the heroes in it are likable enough, and Sam Gideon and Robert Burns are definitely likable enough. Their having at each other banter is fun, and Burns has some downright hilarious lines based of the context. The story can also be taken as a Japanese critique of American foreign policy and military-industrial-complex over the last 10 years in some ways as well. That's the discussion I'd love to have sometime but is too layered in spoilers.

In the end the game has three issues, one that's huge and the other two that are minor. The HUGE issue is the utter lack of multiplayer. Now, I can understand Platinum Games not wanting to enter into the competitive market here, because they'd have a hard time going up against some of the big players in that space, but co-op is a big part of why I love shooters and frankly I really miss it here. I can see how there might have been some issues - How do you handle 1 player going into bullet time while the other isn't, for example - but it really would have been great if I could have played through this game with people.

The two more minor issues are the way the game handles death. Much like DMC and Bayonetta, the game has a score system, which is really superficial, but if you're trying to get a high score, you pretty much can't die as death incurs score penalty. What is nice is that if you don't give two craps about your score, the game does have a very generous check-point system, and some boss fights have checkpoints DURING their encounters, so it's pretty forgiving. However, the OTHER problem with death is it downranks the weapon you were carrying.

Let me explain that last bit: so Gideon's suit, the ARS, uses a transforming gun for it's weapon (which is COOL). So instead of you picking up guns in the field, it scans and duplicates them, switching between up to 3 configurations at a given moment. As you scan a weapon while you have full ammo with it, it "ranks that weapon up" giving it various bonuses like increased ammo capacity, increased damage, increased accuracy, etc. On the one hand I love this system because it allows you to power up your favorite gun to absurd killing power and wreck face with it. On the other hand I don't like that the fastest way to level it up is to not use it so you can have max ammo when drops appear for it, thus ranking it up. This is made worse by if you die, as stated, it ranks down the weapon you were carrying, which means though you can respawn, you respawn with the weapon not at where it was when you died.

So that's my problems with the death system. This really would be a minor nit-pick except every now and again, the game one-shots you. Sometimes you enter an area and there's something you have to do before X happens, or you die. Or sometimes there's a quick time event you can fail that will kill you. Or sometimes 3 seconds after you enter a room a battle-ship mounted laser cannon one-shots you. These wouldn't be issues, due to the game's generous checkpoints, were it not for the death issues mentioned above. The result is these cheep shots feel frustrating instead of hilarious like they did in RE4 (at least I found them hilarious in RE4).

Thankfully, as bad as those sound, they are really minor. No weapon can really get ranked down so far that it doesn't help you any more, and there's a wide array of cool enough guns in the game that you might not ever try to max out a gun because you're having too much fun sampling them all. And the score penalty only matters if you care about that sort of thing, which given it's a singleplayer campaign, maybe you don't.

Again, overall I recommend Vanquish. Not my favorite game of the year, but definitely a solid game to your 360/PS3 library, and another quality title from Platinum games. They have yet to steer me wrong.

Vanquish is coming to Steam this week. It was a solid 3rd person by Platinum Games, check my comments above on the game itself  Here's TB's take on the port are attached.

$20 bucks sounds like a really good deal with TB giving it that kind of review.

I remember enjoying it on the 360 but it is crazy short. It's a Platinum game so should be expected though. $20 is a fine price for it I believe.

Oh framerate bugs.

Apparently if you play at high framerates you take more damage on the PC version. Because people don't know how to code games properly.
