Speaking personally I think there's a huge difference from comparing 5 years of balance changes to say League of Legends, to the mass re-writing, replacing and retconning of content that World of Warcraft.  League of Legends has mostly been changed in look and feel, but you're still playing 5v5 DotA style base push game.  WoW's game play is to a large extent the world you explore and the quests you do, and if those are changed substantially so does the game, even if the core gameplay loop of "talk to guy, kill mobs, talk to guy" is unchanged.

That said your point about splitting the community is well made and heard.  That would be my big worry too.  If 100,000 people play the MMO in the USA, and 50% of them play vanilla, it may be hard for either one to get the number of players needed to do content.  I mean at this point all of the Wildstar players in NA are shoved onto one server, and that's still not a guarantee you can get an instance to pop.   Split the group too much and these WoW groups would be in a similar boat.

I do think it is absurd that WoW still has a monthly.  I think it is absurd any MMO has a monthly at this point.  The illusion of its necessity has been broken by all the F2P and buy-the-box MMOs that are just as much work to maintain (though I imagine WoW still has better GM support than any of them).

I probably would have kept buying WoW expansions if they had ditched the monthly fee... At this point I'm so far behind in number of expansions I can't imagine them getting me back regardless.

They keep giving out previous expansions for free regardless of your account status so you'd only be one behind. You should have up to Pandaria if you were to resub. I assume once Legion comes out and has been out for a few months Warlords will become an auto-include.

FWIW, Ren and I are getting back in for Legion.  Don't know how long it will last, but I'm in Warlords of the Pandarian Cataclysm now getting the last few levels on Danse and Cade so I can use the free level-100 boost that comes with Legion on a character that actually needs it.

Also I've always been disappointed that Danse never ran Hyjal or Twilight Highlands.  But with the massive XP buff everything south of level 90 got with Warlords, I will probably hit 90 in the Highlands, skip Pandaria completely, and head straight for Draenor.

So a WoW Blue made a statement on the whole Nostalrius shutdown. The basic gist of it sounds like what most people have been speculating. They had to shut it down for legal reasons and it's probably not possible to give out a license for private servers. Also a "classic" server sounds reasonably hard to put up otherwise they would've done it already (you know, without the hacks the Nostalrius folk no doubt had to do to make it work). Kinda nice to hear some feedback on it and sounds reasonable to me.
