I came across this the other day and mentioned it at game night.  Essentially if you have engaged with getting any type of loan (car, home, maybe even student?) or credit card in the past 20 years then Equifax has let slip all of your information.  Like, including your social security number.

Here's a link to a reddit post that gives you ideas on what to do to protect yourself and how to make the company pay.

This whole thing just infuriates me more about SSN's and they're insecurity and how fucking easy it is to steal someone's ID. This is such a huge breach of security but fuck all if they're the one's to start freezing credits and start using more secure methods. Nah, we just dropped the biggest fucking ball so you should ask us if you'd like us to do something about it. No we're not gonna do it ourselves. I hate this fucking system so much.

Best option I found was to freeze your accounts - good NYT article on it, but the links to the pages for that are here:

Equifax - https://www.freeze.equifax.com/Freeze/jsp/SFF_PersonalIDInfo.jsp (Free to Nov. 2nd)

Transunion - https://www.transunion.com/credit-freeze/place-credit-freeze ($10)

Experion - https://www.experian.com/freeze/center.html ($10)

Most states will let you temporarily unfreeze the account to allow an approved credit check through (moving apartments, new credit card, etc), but all three websites tell you which states they charge fees for.

Thread-o-mancy!

Anyway, the settlement is about done and all.  In case you're wondering about if you were effected and want to file a claim here's a link to the FTC page about it.

Thanks for the heads up. My info apparently was affected, so I am eligible for free credit monitoring services.

Fuckers get away with letting out everyone's info can't even set aside enough money to pay people the tiny amount they originally promised.
