I think we've had threads talking about specific bands or albums before but not a general, "hey let's talk about what we're listening to" thread, and I am finding myself in need of one, so I thought I'd start one.

So who all has listened to Linkin Park's new album Living Things?  As is normal with me and LP, my first listen did not leave me with positive feelings.  I feel like the album starts out kinda strong.  "Lost in the Echo" gets me going, for example, and "Burn it down" has a catchy chorus.  Then "Lies Greed Misery" hits and it makes my ears bleed. From that point I feel like I'm coasting on really generic sounding stuff until the closing two tracks (edit change - Listening to "Castle of Glass" again it's growing on me, as is "Victimize"), "Tinfoil" and "Powerless."  Overall thought at this point I feel like I need to make it a point to not buy this album.  I've bought the last two Linkin Park Albums and I fear that the fact that they keep making money off these releases isn't sending the right signals.

So I find myself kinda disappointed and hungry for new music.  Curious to find out what new stuff might be coming out I find out that Disturbed is actually on hiatus!.  While this is itself disappointing news, it sounds like the lead singer has teamed up with Filter's guitarist to start a side-project band called "Device" to create an "Industrial Rock" sound (he also makes it a point to say it's not Dub Step).  I am curious but we probably won't hear this album until next year.

Dream Theater is also still touring last year's "A Dramatic Turn of Events," an album of theirs that I would not consider bad, but still a step backwards from the preceding "Black Clouds and Silver Linings," which itself wasn't as good as the album before it.  What I'm trying to say is I feel like they've been on a slight downward slide since "Octavarium." Either way, a new album for them is in development, but I won't be hearing it until 2013 at the earliest.

So that takes care of my top 3 bands - not a whole lot going on now or for me to look forward to for a while, so I started poking around at some of my other favorites.

Within Temptation hasn't dropped anything since "Unforgiven" which makes sense - that wasn't that long ago.  It would appear, as I didn't get into them until "The Heart of Everything" that I missed a few albums from them ("Enter", "Mother Earth", and "The Silent Force").  Has anyone listened to these?  Are they any good compared to their newer works?

I am still not sure how I discovered Five Finger Death Punch, but they have been growing on me.  At this point I only have "War is the Answer", and B'harroth told me to get "Way of the Fist."  Apparently they also have a newer album I haven't listened to yet called "American Capitalist" that I might listen to as well.

It also sounds like Breaking Benjamin, and Killswitch Engaged are also on hiatus now too.  Wonderful.

So it sounds like if I want to scratch my new music itch I might need to branch out into some new bands.  Anyone been listening to any bands that aren't on the above list that they would recommend?  I'm looking for something on the rock-ish or metal side.  I also want to expand my horizons on this Dubstep thing - I have one Skillex Album ("Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites") which I like, but it's kinda short and I've heard it enough times that is wearing out its welcome.  Any recommendations around that point?

I've been a big fan of Halestorm. Always a fan of female vocalists in a primarily hard rock band. They do dabble in other styles which is nice to hear so each album, while still rock, has a bit more diverse sound to it.

Yeah I have their Self-Titled album.  I'm a fan of some of the music on that album ("Love/Hate Heartbreak" was a personal favorite for a while), but I remembered tiring of the rest of the disk for some reason. Cannot remember why now though.

I guess they released a new album in April called "The strange case of...".  Have you heard?  Is it any good?

I think "Heart of Everything" is a good place to pick up Within Temptation, though "Silent Force" is good also. Not as big of a fan of the other stuff, though that isn't to say that it is bad, just not what I was looking for.

I will say that yes, I bought Living Things.  I'm a sucker for the band, and I actually loved Minutes to Midnight and A Thousand Suns.  This though......

*sigh*

Part of the reason I liked A Thousand Suns is it was an album.  It flowed.  It felt like it had an evolving idea that it carried through.

Living Things is unfortunately a cd.  And that's all.

It has some ok songs on it, and more of them grow on me the more I listen to it.  I think it starts out stronger and then sort of.......goes on with music, I guess.  Not that impressive.  I guess I didn't expect a whole lot -- I had heard Burn It Down on the radio a bunch, and didn't ever move me like The Catalyst did.

Seeing them in concert in August.  Honestly kicking myself because I missed them when they did their Thousand Suns tour.  I hope they play a bunch of music off all their albums (which I'm sure they will) because I do miss their older stuff more now.

Will check out your guys musicy links once this wedding stuff is said and done.  Wouldn't mind picking up more music for my drives.

Curious -- am I the only one who would be super excited to see Daft Punk tour again?

I'm still poking at some of the suggestions here.  I gave "The Curious case of..." from Halestorm a listen and... I just don't think that's what I'm looking for right now.  I don't have anything to say wrong with the music, it's solid, something about the lyrics isn't jiving with me though.

While I continue my search though, I thought I would mention that thanks to that Train Simulator 2012 video, I think I have found the sound track of the robot apocolypse. (Yes I am linking to Dubstep, but it's the heavy, evil, dark kind of dubstep that I am finding I like).

But since you're digging bass so much, this has quite the drop.

EDIT: And I like the use of bells in the second one.

I actually already have that album from Skillex.  I bought it for "I want to Kill Everybody" which I feel is very good "Far Realm" fighting music.  The other one does do neat things with bells though!

I do wonder if I've shared this with everyone yet, but KoRN's most recent album was a big collaboration with a bunch of different dubstep artists and honestly it's the best stuff they've done in the last decade.  The album is an amazing fusion of electronica and rock and produces a hybrid sound.  The freshness of it reminded me of how unique putting rap beats into rock instraments felt in the 90s with Linkin Park and other bands started doing that. Attached is my favorite track of the album (featuring Skrillex), and I'm still looking forward to when I can make use of it in my D&D Campaign.

Additionally I'm listening to "The Silent Force" by Within Temptation.  I like what I'm hearing, though I am confused as to why "Stand My Ground" is a track on this album when I have it on my album of Heart of Everything?  It's not even a different version...

I was confused by this as well. From what I read it was added on the US edition. I assume it was cause they were starting to gain momentum here and wanted to add some more desire to pick up their new album so added their most famous hit to it.

EDIT: Yeah taking a quick look Heart of Everything was the first album they released in the US. They released their older albums here later. So yeah, no doubt added their hit from their last album to the first release here to pump sales.
