I found recharged St00f.  I agree that this is... not great...  Though I think most of that has to do with the fact that is remixing boring, powerless songs in the first place.  I find these remixes to be better than the original versions of most of what I'm hearing so far. It's just that improvement doesn't make it good.

In case it wasn't clear, I didn't really like "Living Things" which I think most of this is the root of this.

Yeah, I believe it is.  I was not a big fan of Living Things either.  I rather liked all their albums until these most recent 2 (before Hunting Party).  They just felt sort of lackluster, like they thought they should put out an album but didn't really know what to put on it.  Hunting Party seems like they're going back to their roots, doing more of the rap/electronic/weird stuff.  I didn't get a chance to buy it today, but hopefully I will remember for tomorrow -- looking forward to having a new album to just listen to for like 2 weeks straight.

Canadians are my favorite mythological creature.

In honor of finishing Grey Goo's campaign last night, I have decided it is time for me to honor Frank Keplacki.

Most of you should know who I am talking about because you have probably figured out I'm obsessed with his music. In case you don't, he was the composer for the Command & Conquer games and other of Westwood's games in the 90s, and now works for Petroglyph who were the developer on Grey Goo.  You can learn more about him and his music at his website. I got the chance to meet him in person at PAX East last year and can verify that IRL, he is a cool dude.

Anyway on to the point to this post.

I want to open with the track that he is most known for: Hellmarch (1996). Composed as the trailer music and main theme for Command & Conquer: Red Alert - an alternative history RTS where World War II didn't happen, so instead the Cold War wasn't so cold and the USSR invaded Europe.

As cool as Hellmarch is, it is the tip of what Frank's done for the Command & Conquer games alone.  The song that sunk me into the original C&C was "Act on Instinct," (1995) the track the game often started on whenever you started a mission.  It's a solid song to hit the ground running with.  I also love other tracks from this game as well, recommending Depth Charge, Mechanical Man, Industrial, and Deception.

My favorite song from C&C 1 though was "Voice Rhythm."(1995)  This was a CD-Audio track that was part of the "Covert operations" expansion disk, meaning it was a higher quality audio and also fit the idea of a "Cover Ops" mission.

From C&C's sequel, Tiberian Sun (1999), Lone Trooper and Nod Crush were two of my favorite tracks. Those of you who read Rhapsody & Requiem may recall me using Nod Crush in it.  Tiberian Sun's music in general was more moody and atmospheric than C&C and Red Alert's, sort of fitting the post-apocalyptic vibe they were going for with the game.

In 2000 they released Red Alert 2, the last C&C game that had Frank's music for the whole soundtrack.  Some strong entries for that include Hell March 2 (not as good as the original but still good).  I honestly have to recommend the whole soundtrack here, but I'll pick Grinder to share in addition.

Unfortunately after Petroglyph left EA, they weren't able to make an original IP for a while.  They did work on a pair of Star Wars RTS called "Empire at War," which Frank had to try and make original but Star Wars sounding music.  It is interesting to listen to but not his best work IMO.

In 2007, Petroglyph got the chance to do an original IP RTS for Sega called Universe At War: Earth Assault.  This soundtrack is probably Frank's best work.  Not only is it a lengthy soundtrack, but he was able to do three unique sounds for each of the game's unique races and they are all a lot of fun to listen to.  I highly recommend giving the whole thing a listen some time, but for now I'll just share the most iconic (to me) tracks from each of the game's three races: Damage King (Hierarchy), Modern Design (Novus), Divine Intervention (Masari).

Finally we have Grey Goo (2015), which Frank again gets to do 3 different styles of music for each race.  While I do love Grey Goo's soundtrack, I don't think it gets the chance to speak in as unique of voices as Universe At War does.  Still there is some really memorable stuff here that I've caught myself huming when walking around or doing other tasks.  Eliminate(Goo), Agile Maneuvers (Human), Beta Formation (Beta).  As a bonus I want to include Increase Production (Human) which outside of being for a video game I think is just a fun techno song to listen to in general.

So there's a big list of Frank's work!  You can find more of it on his website and much of it can be listened to there.  It looks like he even did music for a bunch of games I never played like Nox and Earth and Beyond.  Hope you enjoy what I've shared!

EDIT: Sorry 1 more track, I can't help myself.  Crush (1996) from Red Alert.  DO YOU NOT WANT TO STAND UP AND CRUSH YOUR FOES JUST LISTENING TO THIS?!

This is an interesting find.  I don't know how many of you ever played or heard of Startropics from the NES era.  It was a classic among me and my friends, especially in an era where there was only one "true" Zelda game still (many of us felt Zelda 2 a Pariah... I have respect for it now, but imagine a situation where those were the only two Zelda games, and you might understand why people think it is so odd and wished Nintendo had gone a different route with it).  Anyway this curious video highlights how there were bugs in the game's music and gives you a chance to hear what a couple of tracks should have sounded like.  It's interesting digging into the music tech of the NES era if nothing else (I recommend if you want to avoid story spoilers from the ending that you don't watch the video though, just listening is enough)

Ahhh yes... it's a good thing that track is good because that level is LONG.

Not Hotline Miami related, Reddit caused me to stumble into this gem.  I'm currently hooked on it.
