I enjoy Civ V. I've never gotten super into Civ games but I always enjoy their newester iterations. I'd still like to try playing a multiplayer game of it. Only Civ-like game I ever got around to multiplaying was Alpha Centauri with Vergil back in the day.

If you've not played a Civilization game before here's what you're in for - a turned based game that is all about raising a civilizations from the beginning of order into the space age, and trying to become the supreme civilization of the world before the game ends (I think in this game it ends in 2050 AD?).  You will determine how many cities you will have and where to put them.  You will build armies to defend them or crush your foes.  You will build structures within those cities to improve culture, food, happiness, production.  You will have to actually engage in diplomacy with the AI as each player is out to win as well, and sees you as either a stepping stone to victory or a useful ally in times of desperation.

I've been a big fan of Civ since i was introduced to it on the SNES.  I had a harder time liking Civ II than most people because it felt a bit too complex to manage.  I never played Civ 3 and very little Civ 4, but I really dig Civ 5.

TBH, Civ 5 is my favorite version of the game to date for the following reasons:

  1. The Hex grid makes the map much easier to understand than before.
  2. The removal of unit stacking makes combat feel more tactical than just stacking a big army on top of each other and slamming them into another big stack.
  3. Along those same lines, cities are no longer defenseless without a unit protecting them.
  4. Pretty graphics. Good music.
  5. Steam Achievements.
  6. More ways to win: Still have Science & War victories, but I also enjoy the Cultural victory (at least before the newest expac which I only bought a few moments ago and have yet to even install let alone play).  The diplomatic victory I think I've yet to do.  It's alright, I liked Alpha Centauri's more.
  7. Your choice of nation can really shape your gameplay if you let it, and playing to a nation's strength can often be fun.  It really adds to the game's replay value that pulling of a military win as American might go quite differently than trying to do the same as Greece.

Now there are a few problems I have with it:

  1. Kinda bummed that each nation only has one leader, though their choices are pretty solid over all.
  2. Kinda bummed that systems of government aren't as pronounced a thing anymore (maybe in brave new world?)

What I would recommend if you pick it up is play a single player game as your favorite country in the world set to a small or medium map shaped like Earth and the easiest AI setting.  Let that game give you a chance to understand the game and all it has to offer.  Once you feel like you got a handle on it, start your second game closer to normal difficulty and a bigger map and start picking your civ based on your attempted victory avenue. Civ is fun, but its time consuming.

The biggest warning I'd give for it is that it is very much a "one more turn" kind of game.  If you are not careful, you will casually start a game of Civ at 11pm, and realize around the year 1990 AD in game that it's 5am and you never went to sleep.

IMO, given how much I know you like Sins, I will be SHOCKED if you can't get $7.50 of enjoyment out of it.

When you put it that way, you're definitely right about $7.50 of enjoyment. Bought!

My big recommendations for today's sales:

  1. FTL is $2.50 oh my god this game is worth more than that.
  2. XCOM is $9.99 O_O

I'm still on the fence on Darksiders II.  I haven't finished it yet personally.

Also I'm super glad I noticed Civ V's latest expac being on sale this morning and jumped on it because it's already back up to $29.99.  Saved $10, oh yeah.

Niether have I. I don't know what it is that turned me off from that game since the first one. It's probably the completely unnecessary Diablo style loot system that makes things suddenly a bit more tedious (which I think you've mentioned before Vergil). Additionally, the story seems... not as urgent I guess? It's all about Death trying to help out War's case but you already know what happens and nothing else is really in danger, you're just kinda stuck somewhere so it all feels very "meh". I could also be remembering some stuff incorrectly but that's what immediatly pops into my mind.

Still, for $10 that's not bad to give it a try even if you stopped where I did.

You're right about the lack of urgency. I just didn't feel motivated to advance in Death's plot. I got past the first world area and onto some big airship thingy and just... stopped.

Holy crap!  Less than 30 minutes left on Tropic 4's Collector's Bundle being $7.99!  Barely snuck that one in.

Anyone want to trade me an extra Prison Architect and/or Bioshock Infinite card for Football Manager, Skyrim, Kerbal, or Torchlight II cards?  This would be for the sale badge.

I have none of those cards, but I did just pick up Dishonored and Mirror's Edge on sale! This has been a good summer sale for me!

Same here!  For about $60 I'm now the proud owner of:

  1. Civ 5: Brave New World
  2. Tomb Raider
  3. Hotline Miami
  4. Tropico 4
  5. The Walking Dead
  6. Star Drive

I've already been playing Hotline Miami, and it is a game that is way more fun than it has rights being.  Something about its trippy, murderous, and mysterious journey, and its one-hit-death challenge has egged me on to play it.  I'm already through the main story and am working on the post-credit side story now.  I've gotten way more than my $2.50 of enjoyment out of it.

I've not played Mirror's edge.  I'm not that big of a fan of Dishonored TBH, but I do hope to give it another shot some day.

EDIT: I forgot - If you don't have Sins: Rebellion yet, it's $10 right now.  Go get 'em.

Edit again: Oh and I guess Organ Trail is like 1.24
