The Web Is Stupid; Picture Hosting Edition

As you may have guessed, I'm home from Hawaii. And I've got photos! Which I want to share with people. And I can't find a damned hosting solution that works on both PC and Mobile platforms without fucking with my images.

My first go-to was Imgur. After I decreased my picture resolutions a bit and did a little compressing to get their file sizes all in the range of 400k to 3mb I uploaded the things, created an album, and captioned everything! It all went smoothly and I was happy with the result on my PC. But my parents and grandparents will be viewing them all on iPads so I figured I should check them out there. Maybe half my pictures are fine, but the other half of my pictures are panoramic shots. And they are a nightmare.

Imgur does some form of thumbnailing to make everything in the album display all pretty in a column. This is totally understandable. But it means that my panoramic shots end up being a handful of pixils tall when viewed in the album. If I pinch to zoom on the image itself the page lets me zoom in, but it doesn't increase the view space I'm given on the screen (still a few pixils tall) and suddenly the resolution looks crappy. I'm zooming in on the thumbnail rather than getting to zoom in on my full sized image. So I tap and hold to get a context menu that gives me the option of viewing the picture at the proper URL for the original image file itself. And that still gives me the damned thumbnail! I have no way of viewing the full-sized picture on the mobile device other than typing in the direct URL to the .jpg itself! For shits and giggles I check it out on my Android smartphone, and it has the exact same problems.

So I look around for another image hosting platform, and the Internet suggests using Google+ Photos. So I reupload everything, recaption everything, set it up in an album and share it, then try viewing it on my iPad. EXACT SAME DAMNED PROBLEMS. THUMBNAILS EVERYWHERE. Except I can't even get a direct URL to my original images here. My source images were resized when they were uploaded if their resolution was too great.

GRR. So does anyone know of an image hosting platform that will allow me to caption my pictures without fucking with their resolution and still have them be easily viewable on mobile platforms?

EDIT: Here's the Imgur gallery in case you want to see my pictures. Don't view it on a mobile device, though.

Nice pics!  They actually seem to be viewing ok on our iPad Mini, but I wasn't doing a lot of zooming and I have good, young eyes.  I can see where your concern is, but I think it might be ok.  Imgur appears to be cranky with all large albums on mobile anyway -- it's reloaded itself about 3 times while I've been trying to view it.  Might be our internet though.

We had a similar food experience in Sint Maarten when we ate a place called The Stone (if I recall correctly) -- they brought us food that wasn't fully cooked (you had a couple of different options) and a really hot stone to then cook your food one.  Super neat, got your stuff cooked to order, but expensive.

Sucks about the sunburn.  What is slightly more concerning it that it appears you aren't wearing anything on your bottom half. Not sure if a crop might help it seem less like we're all about to see your naughty bits.

Thanks for sharing guys!  Can't wait to see Kelly's pics as well.

EDIT: Zooming in on our iPad works just fine for the panoramic shots.  Also GOAT.

I'll crop the sunburn one down to my belly button. Sorry about that.

Anyway, what magic are you working to get the thing working on your iPad? For example, you should easily be able to read the writing on the side of the trolley in the panoramic picture I got my finger in. I can't do that on my iPad without typing the image's direct URL into my address bar. It is just giving me the shrunken down thumbnail to zoom in on.

EDIT: I wonder if it is the mobile versions of Chrome that I'm actually fighting with here and not hosting solutions... I use Chrome on both my iPad and Android smartphone. Time to download mobile Firefox.

Double EDIT: Nope, still a pain in the ass on Firefox. Triple EDIT: Safari too.

We're just using Safari.  Will check when I get home about the trolley writing, but we were getting really good resolution with no issues.  How strange.

Oh man aren't those trees by the old Palace interesting?!  I took a few pictures of them as well.

A lot of these panoramic shots could make great dual-monitor wallpapers if photoshop'd up right.

Surfing!  We didn't do that!  Hell I've still never been surfing...  enjoy?

Yeah my photos of the Luau turned out crappy too, which was a shame.  I saw a bunch of stuff I wish I had pictures of.

Man the volcano area is so uncharacteristically dark and barren compared to so much of Hawai'i I saw.  I mean it makes sense but talk about a contrast!

Lots of my original images on the panorama's have stupidly huge dimensions. They are a minimum of 1700 pixels tall and a couple are over 7000 wide, so it'd be easy to turn them into wallpapers for a set of 1920x1080 displays. They're not as... sharp at that resolution, though. Tons of pixels, but not terribly crisp.

Surfing was fun for me. I never caught any spectacular waves (there wasn't anything terribly big where we were), but it was a great feeling to actually get up on the board, not fall over within 5 seconds, and ride it until the wave dies out. It is more tiring that you'd expect, especially on the arms. You do a lot of paddling with them while laying on the board to get yourself in position. Kelly had less fun as she had a rough wipe out early and swallowed a bunch of seawater. She called it quits after about half an hour because of that and didn't feel well for a few hours.

The volcanic rock is a very stark contrast to things! It isn't a terribly lush area in the first place, but you'll be driving along in low forest or rocky scrub brush and then suddenly BAM it looks like someone bulldozed everything and then tried to do the world's worst parking lot paving for a mega-mall that's miles long. It is surprising just how black the stone is, even after it has been weathering for years. It just never stops being pitch black. And the rocks lighter than you'd expect as even the lava that flowed and hardened the smoothest has a lot of little air pockets in it inside.

Oh I feel for her.  Half of what made me sea sick on our snorkeling expedition was misuse of the equipment causing me to take in sea water (I've always been a strong swimmer and I think my first instinct when I saw something interesting was to dive down and go to it, and I did not correctly consider the fact that my equipment only works if my head stays at the surface).  When that made me sick I made the further mistake of getting out of the water and onto a boat that when stationary has no wave resistance and then got motion sick on top of that.  So yeah honestly she probably made the right call least she did what I did and started "feeding the fishes" as our guide put it.

I always hear about how black obsidian is.  Honestly ever since I heard about it I thought it sounded interesting. I should try to see some IRL sometime.

Regarding the photos, hell man the bigger the better.  It's easy to make pictures look better going from big to small - its the other way around that is stupid hard.

Feeding the fishes did happen to her when we went kayaking and snorkeling, unfortunately... Kelly found the ocean beautiful, just not from within.

Seawater is awful, and I'm not just saying that because I've been spoiled by the Great Lakes. The salt just gets everywhere.

Sent you a screenshot of what it looks like when we zoom in. Personally I think the resolution is fine, but they're your pics, so I can understand if you want them higher quality.

Yeah the Pacific ocean hates me. That's what I'm going with anyway.
