Friday, Feb, 5th.  E-mail from project manager.  Developer has found issue with layout template that is causing print issue, passed the ball to my team to fix it, project manager says to make it a priority that day.  I spend the morning figuring out where these layouts are, making the requested change, updating print CSS to consider this changed layout.   Test changes myself, look great:  desktop FF, Chrome, MS Edge, and iOS Safari all good to go.

Pass code for code review.  Team mate says all good.  Developer asks why we didn't update print.css in another folder.  Back and forth with him on even figuring out why there is a print.css in that folder, and what it even does.  Figure out that there is another system that is not part of this fix that might need to have its print.css updated per this change.  Legit concern, but this not a system I work on regularly so I do not have updated access credentials and my old ones don't work.

2:21 pm Friday, Feb 5th, request access to system.  Project Manger assigns this task to someone.   Project Manager also sends an e-mail indicating our fix, along with some others really should be ready to deploy by Monday.

3:21 pm - No response from the person who is supposed to get my credentials.  I send him a message on Lync and he blows me off as if what I'm asking for is lower priority than his stuff, despite the e-mail  his boss copied him on, which he apparently hasn't seen.

4:21 pm - Still no response from person who is supposed to get my credentials.  Try asking some other people.  They can't help me.

5:21 pm - Still no response form person who is supposed to get my credentials - and all indicators point to him having gone home for the Weekend.  Resolve to watch my e-mail so I can jump on this as soon as he gets them to me.

.... Dawn of Saturday ...

.... Dawn of Sunday ...

6:41 pm Sunday, Feb 7th - Person who is supposed to get me my credentials sends me a Path to a shared folder just saying "try these."  These spread sheets include 3 of the fields I need, but not the 4th field of access.  Notice e-mail at 10pm.  Try to login with provided info.  Cannot.  Now waiting for someone on our team to respond.

I refuse to be held accountable for this change not being ready Monday morning.  All I can do is leave my laptop on listening for e-mail and hope someone gets back to me tonight.  Yay.  What a fun way to spend the end of my weekend.

Quick closure on my last post:  Team lead had my back.  I was not held accountable for things being late (though turns out they were not late after all), and he agreed with me that the delay in support was unacceptable.   Had the guy I was waiting on in my office that day and we moved on.

Now I'm irritated because the project team has developed this new annoying habit in the last week or so.  They like to take my fixes and post them to the test server for one client, but not the other.  Then QA decides to test the issue on the client they didn't update, which they then of course find the issue still active and re-open closed bug tickets.  I then have to go through back and forth with QA because I of course can't reproduce the issue before they tell me what client they used and I find out that client wasn't updated.

Ok, so between Jan. 1 and Feb. 17 in 2015 there were 586 cases, 57 of which were homicides.

Between Jan. 1 and Feb. 17 this year, we've had 741 cases, 102 of which have been homicides.

Just wow.

Talk about job security.

Also I got a call from HR today and it looks like I've got the Chicago job.  Will be waiting on paperwork to come through, but seems like I'm staying.

Yesterday afternoon the Help Desk Guy returns to our office rather flustered. He had been on a call with HR. A situation had arisen where one of the executives needed some files from HR immediately. Those files were saved on the HR Lady's personal network drive, so not readily accessible to anyone else. The HR Lady is out of the off office until next Monday and currently unable to access the Internet to use the VPN to get those files to the executives.

The Help Desk Guy had been called in to consult on their options. He suggested that he has access to copy the files to a location where the executives can reach them, but the HR Lady does not like this idea. She said that the files are confidential so she doesn't want anyone else accessing them other than the HR Backup lady. So the Help Desk Guy suggests that he can temporarily grant the HR Backup Lady access to the regular HR Lady's personal network drive. Once the HR Backup has gotten the files to the executives he can remove her access to the drive. The HR Lady doesn't like this idea either, so says she will just give her password to the HR Backup Lady so that the Backup Lady can sign into a computer and get to the network drive that way. The Help Desk Guy tells them that this is a bad idea, but HR Lady is set on it, so the Help Desk Guy leaves the room and told me what happened.

This is a violation of the company security policies put in place for HIPAA and SOC compliance requirements. The HR Lady was very much involved in the creation of these policies. Once the policies were created everyone in the company had to read them and sign a document agreeing to follow them. The HR Lady is even the one who emailed the documents out to all the employees and collected the signed documents! This situation is a clear example of a password and account compromise, so I've got no choice but to follow protocol. Change the password on the HR Lady's account, lock her account, and write up a Security Incident report. I tell my boss what's happened and he agrees this is the right course of action. He asks me to email the Security Incident report to the Security Committee once I have it done. HR Lady is part of that committee.

I love it. I love that your boss is in on this and people circumventing shit they put in place when other reasonable measures are there is going to get punished. I'd love to see the shit storm that ensues.

I doubt there'll be any punishment or shitstorm. I mean, she should have known better due to her involvement in creating the security policies, having signed the document saying she read and agrees to them, and the Help Desk Guy warning her against it. If she had done it maliciously, yeah, engage the shitshow. But she just made a dumb move when trying to execute her duties to the best of her ability.

I know I've posted this type of thing before, but it remains true and I'm struggling with what I want to do.

This is a very eloquent article about reasons not to teach anymore.  After 2/3 of a year subbing in Oak Park and talking to old teacher friends in Michigan, I know that everything in the article is still accurate.  There's even more they have to do as far as paperwork about being an effective teacher than when I left Michigan.  Like, one of the number one things they said to me was that I got out just in time.

I spent a chunk of time after moving here just drifting and then drifted back into teaching because the lack of doing anything useful was driving me insane.  But here I am starting to look at the classes and tests I need to take just to begin to try to find a teaching job here.

And I come to the question of should I even bother?  Maybe a decade from now the pendulum will swing back towards teaching being a reasonable profession and I could hop back in then.

The article gives the last few words to why would you stay in teaching, and it's spot on.  Yeah we can wax lyrical about why we love teaching the kids, but anyone who's been there and belongs there understands.

Hell, I'm going through this and I'm looking at the cushy well-paying suburban district here in Oak Park.  The teachers in Detroit who are fighting just to get paid for the hours they've worked or the ones in Chicago who have lost all their arts and gym classes are the real troopers.

I'll stop rambling now.
