Script kiddies make me unhappy this morning. Sorry if this is confusing to some folks. I'm about to use jargon...

Yesterday one of our network engineers installed an Intrusion Prevention System demo on our network. The thing essentially is monitoring network traffic into and out of our firewall to find any traffic that looks like malware traffic. Well last night it picked up four events, one each on four web servers (a combination of IIS and Apache). So the network engineer sent out an email early this morning saying that his IPS detected Command-and-Control traffic on these four internal IP address!!

So I start panicking as these are my servers and this could be a serious fuckin' problem, but we don't have any details out of the IPS on exactly what happened. We don't know the ports involved, we don't know the if the server is the source or destination on this traffic, and we don't know what the other end of traffic was. While the network engineer is trying to find out the details of the bad traffic, I'm running virus scans and antimalware tools on the Windows hosts, and trying to figure out what to do with the Linux hosts at all as I have no idea what antimalware tools are even out there for Linux.

Sadly, the interface on the IPS is so bad that it took the network engineer like two hours after I got into work this morning to figure out what arcane series of clicks he had to make to actually find the details on these events. In the end it was just a scripted scan looking for a vulnerable MyPHPAdmin page that could be exploited, and we aren't running that on the servers so all that attacker got was a 404 error. It was nothing to panic about, but it took us a few hours of panic to figure that out.

Had my annual review today, and despite this year being the year where I took on the most responsibilities and did the most for the company, they've given me the smallest percentage raise I've gotten from them yet. I'm very unhappy about this and may start job searching over it.

That sucks man.  Especially with all the shit they've put you through recently.  Hopefully you can either find something better, or at least bring some chips to the table for bargaining and get more money out of them.

So, first, they deploy a new build system that combines all our css files into one when it reaches the server. Didn't need to tell the front end designers that this was going to happen huh?  Had since real issues with it but updating my browsers fixed most of them. It's still going to make my job harder though.

Then the list of issues being sent to me directly, without proper issues tracking our clear directions is growing.

Then we had a 2 hour meeting about how good the company is doing and show and tell on under development, and recognized new hires, promotions, and recognizing long service with the company. They acknowledged a guy who started the same day as me for 5 years. Not me though. Nope.

I had to leave work after that. I have no way to stay civil after that meeting.

Sounds like both you and Tim are in the same boat with not being appreciated for the work you do.  You also thinking about looking for a new job?

What's frustrating about it is I get no shortage of direct positive feedback from my immediate supervisors, both my team leader and the project leader.  It's irritating that 5 years later that positive feedback hasn't seemed to have traveled up to the tree to people above them.

It is three days in since my work has become an official subsidiary of that other company and we still don't have the ability to setup benefits. There was apparently some fuck up on HR's end with peoples age and addresses and they're attempting to correct this. Our old health insurance was cut off at the end of last month and while they're saying we are retroactively covered for this entire month, I will have no way to inform any health provider about my plan. To be fair, they have informed us if we absolutely need it right now they will set it up manually (a co-worker already had this done) but in the mean time it's a fucking mess. I'm sure the hospital I goto when I get into an accident will be happy to hear I'd need to contact my work to get it setup before I can do anything about insurance. I'm sure there'd be absolutely no issues that'd occur with the paper work for that /s

There's been a myriad of other smaller things happening that just frustrate me to no end about this buyout that I won't go into. Suffice to say there's been tons of "What the fuck"'s being shouted the past few days from lots of people. I've basically been quoting Lando this entire week so far.

AdBlock Plus is going to start selling ad space in the browsers of the people using it. They're branding it as a continuation of their "Acceptable Ads" program where they whitelisted ad networks that were deemed okay by them, so will be replacing "unacceptable" ads with "acceptable" ones from a new source. Which just boggles my mind for a product named AdBlock. I've got most of my users switched to uBlock Origin in Firefox and Chrome, but ABP is the only ad blocker I've found for Internet Explorer, and IE is the browser I'm most worried about in relation to ads! Blargh.

Part of me wants to find it acceptable since I know too many people just throw on an adblock and then proceed to never white list anything. I understand the annoyance but webpages do not run on free and people should not be adblocking everything and plenty of sites have acceptable ads. On the other hand, it's a business and money is being exchanged and I don't trust them. That being said, yeah, uBlock is the way to go.

For me, allowing ads is a security risk. The ad networks have proven unable to properly screen their content far too often, so you end up with malicious ads and malware. I just can't risk it.
