So I'm starting a long term substitute teaching position on Monday (tomorrow).  I'll tentatively be there until December - a guy is having his first kid and he's taking all his medical leave, and I think Oak Park actually allows for taking of sick time for new fathers (Paternity leave?), which is cool.  It's also kind of cool that's I'm able to take the position.  I'm probably not officially qualified for this, but the guy asked for me and they got me pushed through.  What I'm saying is I'm a pretty big deal.

Anyway I will be among the full time employed again, actually doing full-on teaching.  No half-assed sub teaching, this will be a whole-assed affair.  (This is part of the introduction speech I will make to the childrens tomorrow.)

Subbing again since summer ended has reminded me that I do enjoy the performance and talking to people aspects of the job.  Now I'll have a chance to see if I still enjoy all the rest of the minutia of planning, meetings, grading, and parents, etc. It will be balanced against actually having a chance to get to know students again, so we'll see.

Oh, the job is 6th grade math at the middle school that's only a couple of blocks away in case anyone was wondering about that.

Doing this again is going to be rather weird I think.

If bananas have potassium, do potatoes have banassium? 6th graders are like sentient balloons. Drifting in any direction, at any speed when given any provocation.

So -- co-worker is leaving.  This is cool, and I wish him the best.

In his departure of course some of his stuff is getting spread around the lot of us.   However this included being responsible for being "on call" for a project I haven't worked on basically since he started 2 - 3 years ago.  My choices for when I can be on call?

  • Every Wednesday Night
  • Every 4th Weekend (including Friday)

So given the choice between sabotaging my ability to participate in game night ever, I opted to take the weekend.  This still might have difficult implications for D&D and other fun weekend plans.

**sigh**

Ugh, I hope that will either be short term, or that they're offering an increase in compensation due to the added responsibilities. That much on call sucks.

What does being on call entail?  Hopefully not too much staying late or coming in in the middle of the night....

Definitely not increased compensation I'll tell you that much.

As for how long I don't know.  We've not had a lot of luck hiring people lately.  We've had a position open for a PHP developer for over a year now.   I'm not holding my breath.

"On call" in this case means that that if a client wants something pushed, published, or taken down during the off office hours I am assigned, I am supposed to be email vigilant and pushing the right triggers at the right times.

In theory it's not a lot of work.  I'm not responsible for any of these portals so someone else should be responsible for making most of the changes and it will just be up to me to make the changes live/not-live at the right time.  However if there's an emergency or a fuck up, it will be up to me to cover for it and that may entail hours of actual work.  Hopefully that won't happen.

What's particularly horrifying is that I still do not get work email notifications to my phone because I refuse to give work remote kill powers over my personal property. So I have to find some way to still have a weekend and be glued to a device that can sign into webmail and keep it open all the time so I can hear/check for e-mail basically all weekend long or I have to find someway to get work e-mail on my phone w/o giving IT a kill switch.  And if I ever miss and the client notices I could be in hot water over it for years.  I know how unacceptable managers above my boss find that.

I know that some of you have probably worse on-call responsibilities than this, but this is still new to me and dumped on me unannounced, so I'm not pleased.

I take it asking them to provide you with a phone/tablet device in order to actually do the job they want you to do without compromising your own personal property is out of the question?  Seems like if they have their panties in a twist about the security of their emails and their contents, they should be providing their employees with the necessary equipment to be able maintain that security.

You'd think so.  Sadly everyone else on my team has either:

  • Found a way around this policy
  • Doesn't give an eff and lets IT have the kill switch anyway.

So they aren't going to make an exception for me.

And the web-based version of your email obviously can't be opened in a browser on your phone because no browser-based email client really works/looks nice/is usable on a mobile device.  Gah.Beaumont used to be all uppity about it as well, and I know some people just connected their work email to their phones and.......I guess........just never informed IT, so they never had any remote killswitch thing installed?  Maybe that's how some of your co-workers get around it?  I know I would never want to link my personal stuff to work (especially since then the entire device likely becomes FOIZ-able, and that's not cool o_0 ).  Hope you can find a way to make it work.  Or look for a different job ('cause things aren't hard enough).

Actually our webclient runs pretty decently on my phone.  It times out the login and doesn't send me notifications though, so it doesn't do the job of alerting me to messages without me checking them.

So basically w/o a fix I have to set an alarm or something to remember to check my mail every 30 min during this weekends and never plan something that prevents me from saying "oops guys, gotta go to where there is a laptop and an internet connection" without warning.

That sounds like one hell of an impossible situation.
