This is something I've also wished we had for a while now, but have been too intimidated by it to attempt.  I can see how I'd build an fundamental search function. So yeah, I'll add it to my to do list, but that's going to be a massive enough update I can't give an ETA on it.

Unless we want search so bad that I should just drop a Google Search Appliance in here for the time being.  Done that enough times.

Okay so regarding the Search Tool I put up.  If you haven't ready my post about it yet you should.  I will copy the bulleted list from it real quick for quick reading:

  • The Search currently ONLY searches the Forums.
  • The Search FIRST searches for EXACT matches in topics.  Then it searches for your term in posts.
  • The Search is not currently Paginated (as in it displays all results on one page).
  • The Search function is currently looking for matches.  While the matches are case senstive, it is doing string comparison so it is not smart enough to pick up for misspellings.
  • The Search does not currently recognize usernames, ergo you cannot return all posts by user.  It will recognize the username if used in a post though.
  • The search currently displays results based on how recent they are.  It does not have a "Ranking" system that tries to sort by relevance.
  • The Search does not look at YouTube or other video content (it MIGHT read Alt tags, I'm not sure).

Of these features I only plan on doing the following in the near future:

  • Have the Search feature inform you how many results you found.
  • Maybe breaking results into multiple pages with a limit of 50 results per page.
  • Add forum search to the front page, but not all pages of the site.

Any other features will only be added by request.  Search Tools are one of those things where building a quick and dirty one is not that hard, but getting Google-Level quality out of it is a multi-month/year project in and off itself. However, if there are any specific features from the above list that you feel need to be added, post it here and I'll try and make time for it.

l will say that if searching posts by user is a desired feature, I feel a "View all posts from this user" button in the Members section would be a better place for it.

Spoiler Tags!  I have added one!

You will now see a new drop down labeled "Styles".  What you can now do is highlight a bunch of text and then select "spoiler" from that drop down to create a spoiler message.   You'll know it worked if you see a black background to your text in the editor.

Test - Donkey Kong Spoiler: He escapes with the girl after you make it to the top.

Now here I have a question.  What I've done is modeled this basically off of Reddit's spoiler tag, but I know highlighting a bunch of text can get tedious.  One idea is I could make it so that the text becomes read-able on mouse-over.  I feel like that would be easier to use, but on the flip side it would be easier to accidentally read the spoiler.  Probably the best thing would be to build one of those "reveals spoiler on click" thingies, but I don't have time to build the js re-writing that would require right now (plus that doesn't work as well mid sentence).  What do you guys think about this feature?  Good as is?  Make some changes?

As someone who's used a similar system on TVtropes for *ages*, I don't find it tedious like...at all. But that's just me.

The only thing I might mention is that the large black-box look is kinda ..intrusive. I'd rather it matched the background color and then just leave some minor, inobtrusive underline or whatever to indicate there's a spoiler there.

Again, probably cuz I'm used to TVtropes.

Spoilers don't bug me but I understand that they do other folks. I've just been steering clear of the [SPOILERS] threads if it is on something I don't want spoiled. Anyway!

I also find those big black boxes to be distracting in a post. I agree that the click-to-expand is the nicest implimentation I've seen but understand it is a pain in the ass to impliment. Text color matching background color as effective as the black blocks without being as eye-jarring.

I will look into trying a different look than a big black box.  However, as you might have noticed the posts actually have a gradient background, not a fixed one, so I can't actually make the text just match the background color of a post because it will still be readable to some extent.   Still I totally could do color theory work tomorrow and come up with a less obtrusive appearance, at least until I'm ready to dump the time on a click-to-show system.

Though honestly I'll probably see how much the spoiler tag gets used before I invest time in a "show on click" system.  If it's pretty much never used I'm not going to bother.

I guess this is more of a suggestion than a request. The "Online D&D" subforum seems a bit dead and frankly outdated as we aren't doing online D&D anymore. Perhaps switch the name to "Roleplaying stuff" or something of a general place for folks to chat about roleplaying regardless of system? I think that might make it so that all previous posts are still relevant and we could post new stuff there too.

Would any one else like a forum dedicated to Table top Role Playing?  If so then I will follow through with Dominion's request.  I kinda want to know that mroe than one person is going to use the thing before I make a forums-level change.

Oh oh! Maybe "Tabletop Games"! That can include wargames as well. More generalized for more use!
