So sort of following up from our previous discussion from e-mail, I was thinking that it might be cool if we tried out the following these sometime for game night, just to mix things up.

  • Xbox Live night: While not all of us do, enough of us have Xboxes now that I think it might be neat if we do some night on game night on live. Of course, what we play then will be up in the air based on attendance, but it might still be neat to try once.
  • Starcraft Free for all night:Maybe once a month, just to get some Player on Player starcraft in, we could use our more-than-four player group as a reason to get in some 4 to 8 player free for all matches in Starcraft, or if not maybe some 2v2, 3v3, 4v4 or whatever.
  • Free game experiment night: This would be a chance for us to try things like League of Legends or D&D Online. With advanced planning we could make sure we're all signed up and downloaded ahead of time.
  • Domination Night:The idea here would be to pick a game we all have (or a free game we all could have) and make a team with it and challenge the general online community against our teamwork. Some great candidates for this would be UT2k4, TF2, Starcraft, or Warhammer Online with it's "Battlegrounds at level 1" way of doing things.

If any of these ideas sound really exciting to anyone let me know, and maybe we can work on adding them into the rotation.

Heck yeah, I agree about those ideas. I think it would be a heck of a lot of fun to tryout one of the free MMO's / do and XBL night. That would really open it up for people (like me) who can't necessarily get in when a traditional game of Sins/other RTS would start.

Also, one set of words... Horde mode. Could you imagine getting up to I think it may support up to 10 of us (Yes I know not all of us have xbox/gears 2) romping around killing bugs?!

Or having failed that, a quad of us running around the Borderlands eating skags for breakfast?

Or on the PC side of things 4v4 in StarCraft, OR FFA....mind you that may take years to complete with how underhanded we all can be =p

Or even Dawn Of War... Could always pull that dusty old relic off the shelf and give it a run through.

At some point, I still say we all get into a teamed Sins Game.. where we lash out a one another... mind you that will take hours

However, I agree with Adam, lets shake it up, and bring out some dead...AI's?

Cheers!

Should I take this comment as another request for a WYSIWYG editor for posts? ;)

I'm down for new ideas as well! As much as I love a weekly romp of Sins, sometimes I just can't get on in time for such a start, or (more commonly) am bloody exhausted the next day because our game went to late to continue. I am especially interested in an XBL night because as it happens due to my living arrangements, I can't get on "Black Beauty" (aka my X-box Elite) very often. However this semester my roommate has class on Wednesday night, which means I can get on the tv without fear of disrupting the poor girl's sleep/studying (we share a one bedroom apartment and she sleeps in a section of the living room) I still need to get my hands on a copy of Gears 2 for horde-mode purposes, but in the mean time I have BB. I also thing we should spend some time doing player v. player bouts of Starcraft. I think that if we got into that habit of playing living, breathing opponents, it will mean fun times when SCII finally hits and we can take our game to the community.

Thread necro! I wanted to bring this up again since I mentioned it in one other planning for game night and some people sounded interested but then the idea died. I've been itching lately to play an FPS we could all play together and since TF2 still lacks bots (well, they're in beta apparently now) and, well, not everyone has it, I think we should play a night of UT'04. Most of us seem to have it and I think it'd be fun to play some Bombing Run and Onslaught. Perhaps if we want we could grab that RPG mod and have a go at Invasion. If enough are interested perhaps the first game night of next month will do (a week from this Wednesday)? If not, no biggie, just thought it'd be something different to do.

No mere mortal can resist... the evil of... the thread necro... BA BADA BUMP!

I just want to open up this topic again so that we can talk about regular game alternatives. Here's some ideas I had.
  • Another UT2k4 night
  • L4D one Blitz night (split into two groups and try to clear all of L4D1 in one game night).
  • D&D Online test night
  • Guild Wars night

Feel free to weigh in on any of these, or add your own.

It's September 2011.  For the last year the only game we've really had for Gamenight has been LoL.  While LoL is all well and good, that means the event is screwed whenever the servers decide to bork the hell out on us.  Meanwhile we continue to suffer the issue that we can't agree on secondary games to play.

  • Enough of us don't own/want to play Starcraft II for that to be a consistant fallback.
  • Enough of us don't like Guild Wars 1 to play that.
  • Enough of us don't like MMOs anymore/want to play any of the current ones/don't like monthly fees for us to agree on one of those (at least until Guild Wars 2 comes out).
  • Our efforts to find new F2P games so far this year has resulted in BS (see Spiral Knights).

To make matters worse, most of us live IRLs now wherein Sins of a Solar Empire (or Space Game as we've taken to calling it) isn't really an option anymore.

IMO, we need to branch out. We need to find and agree upon at least one other game we can fallback to pretty often should LoL not work.

That said we're running out of games that I have any interest in that I can recommend or point to.  Just trying to think I came up with the following options:

  • September 20th, Gears of War 3 comes out for 360 and, as mentioned, until we beat it, that's all Grace and I are going to play for Gamenight and we invite you all to join us.
  • In October, Space Marine's "Exterminatus" Co-Op mode will be available, though I imagine it will compare to much to Gears 3' Horde Mode at that point to be of interest.
  • We still have games most of us have, like Monday Night Combat, and Magika and Team Fortress 2 (especially since TF2 is F2P now) that we haven't made real, honest attempts at playing at Gamenight.  Maybe we should?
  • There's also the Co-Op Zombie epic Dead Island that just dropped like last week, that I can't get myself to care about (I am like - burnt out on Zombies or something) but might be a lark with a group of people (here's a review).
  • There's also trying to get a regular Minecraft server up again.  The 1.8 Adventure Patch is going to come out soon which should provide some pretty serious changes.  We could look into how much it costs to get a Pro, 24/7 Minecraft server (find out where Amani Shando found there's) and maybe we could pitch in for one of those.
  • There's also of course a growing assortment of Free to play things we can try out.  There's CrimeCraft, Global Agenda (which I was meh about but haven't played since it went F2P - could be better now?), Lord of the Rings Online is F2P now, as is Age of Conan whose combat system always kind of interested me.
  • There's also the hope that Torchlight II will actually happen this year still.
  • Crimson Alliance also just came out on 360 for our top-down hack n' slash needs.
  • There's also the Shooter hit from earlier this year Section 8:Predjudice that earned a lot of buzz for being an amazing multiplayer shooter for only $15.

If you guys know of anything else that you'd like to raise for consideration, PLEASE share it here.

I think I could swing a game of Sins every once in a while, as long as those people who are home early enough could actually start a game promptly at 8 pm.  There are Thursdays (like today) where I don't necessarily have to be in to work before 7, which means I could stay up a little later.

Nate and I aren't interested in Gears of War 3, so if everyone goes to do that we'll just finish Reach. Or play through another Xbox game. Or something else, whatev.

I'd like to try playing Magicka with peeps again.  Is it less buggy now?  I saw the note on Steam that the developers "didn't know the game was shipping" and figured while that might not be true, it would certainly explain the problems we were having with the damn thing.

Right now, I don't mind playing LoL, as long as it works. Wednesday's basically the time for me to play LoL, so I'm not burnt out on it. You best believe I am frustrated with the way the game runs sometimes though.

I would love to try out TF 2 or MNC. My only wish is that someone who knows how to play could show me the ropes on the weekend, so that I don't spend the majority of game night sucking ass and learning how to login/create a profile/how to move. Please, someone, help a sista out!

Other than that, I have no suggestions to add at the moment.  Will let you know if I think of any (besides 4 player Geometry Wars 2 OMG the colors......).
