I'm definitely up for Magicka, and I wouldn't mind giving MNC another whirl. Heck, I'd even try TF2 despite it not clicking with me the last time I tried it. The Space Marine game sounds like it'll be great when Co-op hits in a month or so. And Crimson Alliance looks worth checking out. I assume there's a demo that can be downloaded so I should try that out some time soon. Torchlight II and Guild Wars 2 are where it is going to be at, though! I just wish they were on our doorstep instead of a little down the street still.

As for Minecraft, if we do have interest in that would we want to run a vanilla world or would we be interested in any mods? Fi (from Amani Shando) has bought a hosted server and does a hell of a good job at keeping a couple really good mods on the server as it updates; warp points and creeper explosion protection. Would that be something we might be interested in? I could always ask if Game Knights would be welcome on her server as well. It might be cheaper and more fun for both groups to share a server and split the costs.

Until I'm done studying for and taking my Step 1 (another 40-50 days) I'm going to be very limited in my ability to try new things or even reliably show up for game night.

That said - I've played the hell out of Torchlight so much that I can't wait for torchlight 2 whenever it hits. I still say that I'd like to play SC2 as a group a bit more - see if we can't get it to gel either with the main game or with custom scenarios. Especially since there's now the free-demo release or whatever they're calling it. Lately I haven't found as much time for SC2 since I've been trying to improve my League of Legends profile and I'd rather not see it fal lto the wayside.

Finally - I just got Left 4 Dead 2 and am absolutely loving the hell out of it. Except for the core shooter-y aspects of it which I'm still getting used to at best and not a fan of at worst. So if there's any interest in doing that, I'm up for it (or down for it or whatever).

But most of all - once i have a stable internet connction and access to my main PC - I'm pretty flexible. I find team-gaming with you guys to be its own reward half the time and provided I'm not actively disliking the game; thusfar you guys are 3-for-3 with introducing me to stuff I ended up loving (MTG Forge, Torchlight, LoL).

Let me also say that I heartily endorse the goal of this post. I was alarmed after yesterday how once LoL was ruled out we pretty much had NO go-to options; particularly since there's like 8 different channels/games listed on Ventrilo and we all have so much we could play (theoretically). I don't have the answer - but I'd like to contribute what I can to trying to figure it out.

You'll probably be hard pressed to find anyone who wants to play that game again. Unlike what seems to be the popular opinion around the Intertubes, we for the most part despise the sequel. I think there's like one level I really liked. I believe you were getting gas for your boat or something and after running through the level to get said gas you had to run back in through a torrential downpour. Now that was cool! Other then that though having your team getting 2 tanks thrown at you with a charger and then having your last guy mobbed by a swarm of zombies multiple times in one level play through pretty muched killed it for me. The new "improved" director doesn't seem to give two shits and is just malicious the entire game. Anyways, I'll stop my L4D2 rant. If you're enjoying it, awesome! I'm glad some folks find it enjoyable. For me though, blargh, what a disappoint.

Now if people want to play the original L4D I'd be up for it. It's been awhile that I wouldn't mind a playthrough or two again. Probably not something we're gonna do multiple game nights but it might be fun to do once or twice. So long as Steam's servers aren't going to be a bunch of dicks and give us lag problems for no reason, which has happened to Adam and me on more then one occassion.

Other then that, I support choices of Magicka, which I have yet to beat, and MNC, which I think I've suggested like 3 times before =P I'd also be down for potential Minecraft funs, especially with the adventure update coming soon.

I spoke with Fi about Minecraft. She said we'd be welcome on her server. Her player capacity is 20 people and she's only got 9 people registered to play so plenty of room for us. If people are interested I just need your Minecraft login name to pass along to her so you can be put on the whitelist for the server. If folks do want to play there I'll also be sending her a little money to help with server costs. She says the thing is dirt cheap, though.

THREAD NECRO

Take your pick.

Anyway, I've mentioned on vent before that I think we could an infusion of new games into the group for potential rotation.  Here's where I think we should focus our efforts:

  1. Something available for PC: while we have made the console thing work in the past, this is a particularly awkward time for it with the next gen consoles out and none of us having them the likelihood we might not be getting the same ones.  Plus we are all active steam/vent users at this point anyway.
  2. Something not too expensive: While I don't think free-to-play needs to be a requirement (though hopefully there is a way to try before buying) I want to continue to be sensitive to the idea that folks might not be willing to spend a bunch on something we might not play for long.  This includes monthly fees since there are those in the group who won't play it for that reason alone.
  3. Something where first-person is not required: We have a couple of folks who suffer from various degrees of simulator sickness and others who just aren't nuts about first-person.  This isn't a do-or die, but I think we should try our best to observe it.
  4. Nothing we are already playing: Save yourself a post and don't suggest anything that's been suggested as a game before and didn't take off.  There's a probably a reason why it didn't take off with the group and I don't think making an initiative to find new games will change that.  Exception: the game has changed drastically since last we played it.  For example, the reason I quit playing Warframe was because I got fed up with the way content progression was handled and when they made it difficult if not impossible to do anything solo.  If that has changed, I'd be willing to give it another shake. Another might be a subscription game that went f2p.

So do you guys have any suggestions?

Here are somethings that I have been thinking might work for the group.  Please note I have not had the chance to play any of these, but if there is interest I can look into any of them and report back.

DOTA2

  • Free to Play MOBA where all Heroes (Champs) are unlocked from the start.
  • More challenging to play than LoL so even against bots it may prove a refreshing challenge from LoL.
  • Is on PC
  • Is free to play
  • Not First Person
  • Uses Steam accounts/matchmaking so no new accounts to start.
  • Download Link (Steam)

SMITE

  • Free to play MOBA similar business model to LoL
  • Gameplay is controlled more like an MMO:  Third person, behind the character view.  (Not first person)
  • Have to AIM your abilities like in WildStar/to-some-extent Guild Wars 2
  • Characters are based on ancient gods/heroes of myth.
  • Free to play.
  • Game Site (Download Link available there)

ArcheAge

  • Free-to-Play MMO from the publisher of RIFT, runs on Crytek Engine.
  • Race/Faction System (grr).  Looks like two races per faction.
  • No set classes.  Combine skillsets to make your own class.  Change Classes as often as you want.
  • Crafting, Trading, Housing all present
  • Eventual mounts for ground, flight, and ships for sailing.
  • Game Site (for more info)
  • May require downloading Glyph game download software.

 Section 8: Prejustice

  • $15 FPS - 4 pack for $44
  • Features orbital drops, customizable load outs.
  • Uses Steam for matchmaking.
  • Concern: Uses server structure so finding/hosting private games might be difficult?
  • Bots are in and apparently pretty good.
  • Steam Page

I can't think of any game to recommend off the top of my head. That said I did want to put an old one back on peoples' radar:

Heroes of the Storm:   --still not out--

I'm in the Tech Alpha for this and the only aspect of playing that I haven't enjoyed is that I'm with four bots vs. five bots or I'm playing vs. people. If/when this game goes open-beta I think it's going to be a shoo-in for GameKnight based on just how much fun the gameplay is and how much more DRASTICALLY casual-friendly the game is than LoL.

Annnd thought of something. What about a hack-and-slash of some variety?

Torchlight 2 kinda missed its chance, but now we have Gauntlet (2014) -- a game which definitely seems to show promise in that regard. I think it'll be a question of just how much loot/character progression is a thing, since that's what limits Diablo 3 from being a "great choice" for Game Night.

I'll start downloading Smite now, and give it a try if folks are interested. If folks are interested in Dota2 or ArcheAge please say so sooner so I can get to downloading them too.

I've played a bit of DOTA2's tutorial.  It reminds me a lot of playing campaign missions in Warcraft 3, except more MOBA-ey of course.

I also wanted to add that thanks to talking to DMZ & Renairen, Kitty and I are strongly considering picking up Divinity: Original Sin to co-op with each other at some point, though we are probably going to wait until it comes on sale or something so we can buy two copies cheaper.  So I don't know if game knights wants to do a Wednesday night play through of it at some point?

I guess let us use this topic for that as well:  Are there any games coming soon (as in before the end of the year) that you are planning to pick up and might like to play with the group?  If so share!

For example I don't know how many of you are planning on multiplay Civilization: Beyond Earth, but I know a few of us have it pre-ordered so is that something we should consider?

In response to Gauntlet: I'm curious, but I'm also nervous as I tend to be about co-op-games-with-competitive-parts-mixed-in.  Plus I don't have the huge nostalgia for it, and I'm not sure I'd enjoy group playing as much as I would say Diablo 3 or something.  That said if there's a lot of interest I'd be willing to try it out.
