And new champ spotlight.  They don't come out and say it but I feel like he'd need to be a solo laner to have enough cold for his "I am my own shop" mechanic to pay off.

Just as a heads up:  The PAX Sivir skin is getting an update and those who own the original PAX Sivir will get her for free.   See the patch 1.17 notes for details.

Also there is a PVE event coming to LoL from 9/7 (missing this week's game night) through 9/25 based on the upcoming Star Guardian skin (which I will likely buy all of again).   Something to watch for.

Okay so I played a round of this with randos last night to get a sense of it.  If you want to go into game night tomorrow blind, don't read any more of this post.  If you want to come in with some idea of what's going on, read on!

"Invasion" is a 5 player co-op game mode of League of Legends.  You queue for 1 of two difficulties, the harder of which is only available after you've won a round of the normal mode.  Each player does a "Blind Pick" (see Bot games) of 1 of 10 characters who are automatically locked into their Star Guardian skin after you pick them (even if you don't own the skin - also all 10 Star Guardian champs are available for this mode even if you don't own them).  In case you haven't been paying close attention, your ten choices are:

  • Lux
  • Jinx
  • Poppy
  • Janna
  • Lulu
  • Ahri
  • Ezreal
  • Syndra
  • Miss Fortune
  • Soraka

Those of you familiar with LoL will notice that's a bunch of mages and adcs, a couple of supports, and only 1 melee/tank/jungle/top-laner, and both supports can also "mage" depending on how they build.  All I'll say to that is "this isn't Summoner's Rift" so don't worry about that as much, but more on that later.

Once characters are locked in you are dropped into a map themed after an urban park (I believe it is called Valoran Park).   You are then leveled up to I believe level 8.  It's more than level 6, giving you more than enough levels to put one point in each of your champion's abilities including their ultimate.   You also get a big stack of gold (I forget exactly how much) to buy items.   Once everyone clicks on the star in the center the mode begins.

The mode is more or less a 10-wave mode of co-operative monster slaying.  It feels sort of like Mass Effect's multiplayer or Space Marine's Exterminatus mode, but with the controls of a top-down MOBA which means honestly the thing feels a little Diablo at times.   Some waves you're just eliminating bad guys until they stop spawning, other waves you are forced to stay in a moving circlular safe zone until it reaches it's destination, and other times you will have to defend a very limited area from assault.    If you make it to the end there is a boss fight that is a lot of telegraph reading and avoiding and managing adds.  It feels sort of like a dungeon/raid boss but again, League of Legends. Once the boss is down the team wins!

After every round you'll level up again and gain some more gold to finish off your item build.

The enemies are slightly reskinned versions of basically every void-themed minion and champion in the game serving as our wordless "bug-like" baddies.  The little guys that come out of the Zzrot Portals and Malzihar's voidlings make up the fodder, while Ai controlled versions of Kha'Zix, Rek'Sai, Kog'Maw, Cho'Gath, and Vel'Koz will harass the team throughout the match, often posing the largest "we better deal with them before they wreak us" threats.

Death works differently as well.  When you go down you end up with a 999 second respawn timer, but if an ally stands still near your body for 3 seconds you will be rezzed (something the mode explains forcibly at the very beginning).  So long as one ally is up you're still in it, but if you suffer a party wipe you lose one of your team's "lives" which you start with 3.   There are also occasionally pickups that spawn to restore health an mana but they are not common in my experience.

My advice based on my experience with the mode is this:

  1. Pick a character that you feel comfortable micro-managing your movement with.  This mode involves a lot of awareness and dodging, so worry about picking for comfort before team comp at least for our first matches.
  2. That said grabbing Soraka, Lulu, and/or Janna to give the team extra sustain is probably not a bad idea.   The fact that the new team is 4 damage dealers and Soraka is not lost on me. - I think we can view that as a composition recommendation for this.
    • That's not to say I don't think Poppy has a place here - on the contrary in several rounds having someone tough enough to hold foes back could be fantastic, just whomever is playing should be warned that there are a few waves where playing a melee champ will feel rough and you shouldn't, under any circumstances, try and tank EVERYTHING the boss throws at you.  If the boss telegraphs, yes even the tank needs to MOVE OUT OF THE WAY.
  3. While your normal item builds for these champs will probably be fine, I would highly recommend thinking about the mode, especially on the mages.  While we regain health and mana between waves, MOST AP Mids are used to the idea of "I can blow everything I have on wiping out the enemy team and then go back to base to recharge."  Yeah no that's not at thing here.  I highly recommend grabbing sustain before damage if you plan on playing Lux, Ahri, or Syndra.  For example when I play Ahri I ususally first the Luden's Echo because I do a lot of moving around as her anyway, but I was running through my mana so quickly I wish I'd started Morello's.   For ADCs (Jinx, MF, Ez - unless you're building an AP Ez?  I think AD Ez would work better here but not sure) I'd build for life steal and attack speed before big hits and big crits.  Wave clearing is also a great thing to pick up here.   You might also want to think about some mana regen if you like to use your abilities on your ADC (so for Ez maybe get Manamune and Trinity Force).  I also saw people making great use of "on-use" items here like Redemption which has an AoE Team Heal on it.

That's the jist of it!  I hope we can get 5 people together to hammer out some rounds of this, maybe get good enough to try the harder mode!

I'm totally down to guard some stars, but this is more important.  Also ridiculous.
