Looking forward to more chances to get friendship on with m Friendship drive!  Here's some images of our adventures together (all can be clicked for larger view).

BountyHunterSAx wouldn't sit still in his Cobra for a good picture when I first met him, so this is the best one I have so far.

From a while ago, when Max Boomhammer and I met to show off our respective new rides, his Diamondback, and my Imperial Clipper

And to finish, I'm just proud of how these shots of my Imperial Courier ended up

If you log in to Elite today to you may notice something off about Powerplay.  Specifically that Arissa fell from 1st to 10th in a single week.  The devs are aware and have addressed it with a hotfix (or are in the process of).

I found this part of it particularly interesting:

In addition, we’re taking a look at player action availability, to reduce the chance of Commanders unwittingly sabotaging their own power:
Currently, when a power falls into a CC deficit, although new preparation is halted, expansion still takes place for successful preparation from the previous cycle. This drives the power deeper into deficit, which is compounded by overhead costs.
So we’re going to gate expansion behind a CC wall: we’re going to prevent expansion taking place when a power is in deficit, and we’re going to prevent expansion succeeding if ownership of the system would push the power into deficit.

These changes won’t stop Commanders from having the ability to make poor or good choices (you can still expand into low value systems); it will simply stop them from compounded the quality choices (and hopefully limit the effects of any fifth column elements – Commanders that join a power simply to sabotage it).

How is allowing us to unwittingly sabotage our own power in a game like this good game design at all? It's not like we have a lot of clear ways to determine where we expand.  I mean wrangling power play is worse than trying to control "the zerg" in Alterac Valley.  We don't see what other people are doing, and further, nominating systems for expansion is so obtuse that of course we'll just end up expanding to wherever.  I mean I feel like it must be clear to them that people aren't doing expansion activity because they want to expand there they are doing it so they can earn merits!!!  When is FD going to learn that we don't care about face.jpg and his/her standing in galactic power conflicts and we really serve the almighty credit?!

Oh wait except for I guess Aisling's fans all vying for the right to call her their waifu.  They might care about prettybluehairface.jpg

I really hope when I sign in today I'll have fallen to rating 1 so I can just leave and be done with this mess.

And welcome to another episode of "Isinona is a better pilot than I am,"  though this time I'm not convinced I'm not a better bounty hunter than he is.  Railguns are a lot of fun, true, but having to return to base so much just to kill 12 pirates feels like a waste of time.

The Saitek X52 and some other HOTAS are on sale on Amazon right now.  It's not a huge sale, only about 13% off, but for a $150 joystick, every bit counts IMO.

They ran a livestream yesterday for CQC (which I am going to try and include on this post).  They also have released a Dev Update today with some news.  Here's the big things I want to point out.

  • PC will now be getting CQC much sooner than originally stated. It will be included in our 1.4 update.  A release date has not been given for 1.4, but they make it sound like we'll get it much sooner than the "Fall" estimate we got initially.
  • One of the new ships coming in 1.4 is the "Imperial Eagle" which is a slightly more "interceptor" tuned version of the Eagle.  It will feature 1 medium hardpoint, higher top speed, less maneuverability. They say the ship is being added with CQC in mind.
  • Another ship coming to 1.4 finally is the Condor.  Also sometimes called the "Federation Fighter" it has been for me one of the coolest smaller-craft designs in the game for a long time and I was bummed when I found it wasn't something we could fly (reason being: not jump capable... to small to include an FSD).  We will be able to fly the Condor in CQC.  If a non-CQC version with the FSD is coming was not clear, but it sounds like it?
  • 1.4 also wants to make it so power plant destruction no longer completely destroys a ship. I will quote the article here.
Something else that came up in conversation with fans is how vulnerable the Anaconda is to having its powerplant shot out. We’re going to change how taking out the powerplant works in the CQC update. There will still be a very small chance of powerplant destruction blowing up the ship, but it will also suffer module malfunctions like the other modules. Specifically it will lose power and will need to be rebooted. For the Anaconda we’re also making it a bit harder to hit the powerplant.
  • Devs are also excitedly talking about Powerplay, so those of you hoping they'll completely axe it, that's not gonna happen.  So long as it remains non-manditory, I'm pretty whatever about it at this point.
  • They also say there will be a major reveal at Gamescom on August 5th.

I want to take a second to speak to CQC and the power plant change.

Regarding CQC:  I have to admit after the livestream I am a bit more into this.  The idea appears to be that we do not fly our own ships in it, but rather by participating in CQC our ships are provided.  This accomplishes two things:

  • Giving players a consequence free way to PvP.  No more "I'd like to try PvP, but I'd also like to not lose my 4,000,000cr buy back on my FDL when "trying" PvP.  This also hopefully means matches in CQC will be to the death rather to the "disabling of shields" as they tend to be in Open Play (mostly because there are really no ways to stop a ship from spooling up it's FSD, so once it decides to run at shields down, and it has good armor, it's gone and you can't stop it).
  • By making us fly provided ships they can better ensure a balanced play experience rather than "he with the most cr always wins."  Plus it allows CQC to be more about the fighter-like craft of the game, focusing on (so far) the Sidewinder, Eagle, Condor, and Imperial Eagle.

Now unfortunately they have confirmed there will be no AI pilots for CQC, which is a bummer because I think co-op vs AI this could be neat.  Still, I will have to give this at least a try.  I don't PvP in Elite because the cost of death is too high, I wouldn't mind trying for only the second time in my Elite career actually meaning to fight another player (all of my PvP experience with the game has been against my will, only once was it not me running for my life from second one of the encounter.  That was the time I won btw.)

On the subject of the power plant change:  Overall I'm for it, even if it will potentially hurt my bottom line in a big way.  See here's the thing:  As someone who owns (and has owned) a couple of ships with impressive armor values it's always sat wrong with me that if I ever fought a player (i.e. someone smart enough) who could target my power core, all that armor would mean nothing and I could lose my big, impressive, expensive ship to a much cheaper craft once my shields go down.  It really makes the Imperial Clipper feel unsafe to fly since it's shields maximum is so terrible for the size and class of the ship, it's impressive 460 armor base means almost nothing if you can just detonate its power core so easily.

That said though, in the current state of the game, power plant targeting feels like an important equalizer for all the times you are called upon early in your E:D career to face AI Anacondas and Pythons.  Without power plant targeting, breaking through the armor of these ships with class 2 weapons is a chore (in my experience Rail Guns, Cannons, and Plasma Accelerators, even at C2 still do pretty impressive armor damage to these ships, but everything I just listed has limited ammo so you know, have to watch that).  It is my hope that this change will still give ways for smaller ships to cripple, even if temporarily, their larger foes so they can escape (if that's the goal) or get free shots while they reboot.

I'll leave with some images.  Here's the Condor from the Livestream:

Still enjoy Insonia's videos, though this is another one where I feel like he has made life harder for himself.

New shot of the upcoming Imperial Eagle

Some other fun stats from the weekly e-mail:

Looking at ships, 27 percent fly the starting Sidewinder with various loadouts, but the most popular ship players choose to buy is the Cobra Mk. III, with 19 percent of players at the controls.

They're followed by the Viper (nine percent), Vulture (eight percent), Asp (seven percent) and Eagle (four percent), with the Eagle getting a little boost from the pre-order exclusive Mercenary Edition offering an Eagle for free.

At the other end, just 0.016 percent of players fly the unlovable Orca, making it the least popular ship in the galaxy.

Finally, in Powerplay players are overwhelmingly backing Zachary Hudson. 29 percent of players back Hudson, with just two percent backing Pranav Antal at the opposite end of the spectrum.

And as always, YOU can turn the tide in the Elite: Dangerous galaxy. Hit our forums and let us know if you're brave enough to back Antal from the cockpit of an Orca.
It also sounds like there's a plague running rampant in the galaxy.  There are community goals about it, and some discussion on the subreddit.  Might be worth looking into next time you log in.

That Eagle is pretty slick looking.

Okay this actually makes me want to log in and check that out. Sounds like they're letting it spread too when it fails. Awesome.

There's also perhaps a more combat oriented CG going on in Alliance space right now

EDIT UPDATE: There is also a power play poll on the forums right now. As of time of me posting the votes against power play far outnumber the votes in favor, 82% vs 17%.

God damn it.  I didn't want to believe the Elite Forum and subreddit kiddies  building up some conspiracy about Power Play being some developer's pet project.  I wanted to believe Frontier was listening at least a little bit.

Then this post happened.  Let me quote the important part:

"Why are you wasting time with Powerplay?": simple, we believe in it and we want to improve it. I know that's not what everyone wants to hear, but it's just another facet of the game, like trading, or minor faction rep, or bounty hunting. It's not for everyone in the same way we would not expect everyone to trade, for example.

Right now more than enough Commanders are using it and it's doing its job of dynamically altering human space. We just think we could improve the experience.

Uuuuugggghhhhhhhhh

At least they continue to think it optional.  This is not how I want to shape the balance of power in human space though.  What a drag.
