Release date given of June 2016 for the ambitious old Elite inspired "No Man's Sky"  The game was previously believed to be a PS4 exclusive, has been confirmed for PC as well.

You can learn more about the game here

We've discussed this previously in E3 topics.

Attached is a new planetary combat trailer that was released today.

The game looks like Elite with less focus on buying new ships and more of a focus on exploration and combat.  To writ, you don't seem to be able to upgrade to a ship larger than a heavy fighter, and the game will have planetary landing on all types of planets at launch, putting it way ahead of Elite:Dangerous: Horizons who will only offer non-atmosphere planets by then, and even then you still can't get out of your ship proper.

There's a lot of things that make the game look like it will play differently than E:D too (the flight model looks more simplistic for example).  It may be a better solo experience than Elite as well.  Hard to say just yet.

June 2016 release date holds, now set for June 21st 2016.

Game is expected to release for both PS4 and PC that day.

The Collectors Edition, which is $150, comes with a model space ship that I absolutely don't want.  Nope.  Not at all.  Nuh uh.

...it's so cool looking though...

Man I hope this game ends up being good. It still looks like it'll be fun. I guess I'm just worried I might get kinda bored of just exploring. I love exploring but that's all I keep seeing from videos. "Look at this! You can go over here! Check out how huge the galaxy is!" Hopefully there's some more goals than just exploring and checking stuff out.

That space ship model is so cool though...

Yeah I hear ya.  The game sounds to me like it will be even more "make your own fun" than Elite:Dangerous is, but with a more pro-explorer design to favor that.  I mean the fun of exploring alien worlds is finding the ones with life and valuable resources on them and interacting with those things, and No Man's Sky will have both of those at launch.  We've seen so little of the game's space combat that I worry that part, which is going to end up super important to me, isn't going to be fleshed out much.

I honestly was kinda hoping we'd hear more about the game before it came out.

Which means as cool as the space ship is, we should all probably just wait until reviews come out before taking the plunge.  If this ends up being another flavor of Elite:Dangerous, I mean we already have that.

EDIT: Oh. No Sooner did I post this then Giant Bomb put up an article about 30 minutes with the game.

No Man's Sky is a survival game. There, now you know. The public conversation around Hello Games' unthinkably sprawling, procedurally generated sci-fi whatsit seems to have shifted from "holy crap that's a lot of different planets" to "OK, but what do you actually do?" during the last year, so it's time someone outside of Hello at least attempted to answer that nagging question (so people will finally stop asking it). I recently played around half an hour of No Man's Sky, which turns out to be exactly enough time to just start feeling like you maybe kind of have almost begun to get a handle on the sorts of things that will be occupying your attention in the game, but my initial impression is that your first and most pressing order of business will be to collect a hell of a lot of stuff, and use it to keep yourself alive in a cold, uncaring universe.

So there is that.

That article gives me some more hope. Sounds like there'll be some decent NPC encounters and some enjoyable survival tactics.

No Man's Sky comes out today.  PS4 version is out, PC version sounds like it's been delayed until Friday so they can smooth out some rough edges.  Overall it doesn't sound like the game has been off to a strong start.  Review copies weren't made available and so reviewers were playing some pre-release version lacking the "Day One" patch.   Apparently since the drop of this patch things have gotten much better for the game but I still hear issues.

This Ars Technica article speaks to a refrain those retired from Elite:Dangerous should be familiar with:  repetitive procedural game play and having to make your own fun.   I'm holding out hope that as the week goes on we'll get reviews informed by the post-release version that perhaps speak more happily of the game.  I do want to check it out if for no other reason than it seems like exploration might be more rewarding here than in E:D with the living planet surfaces and alien life to meet and find, but I'm not jumping in for $60 yet.

This is basically the reason I want to get it, the exploration. It also sounds like the reviewer is enjoying it for mostly that and finding the "gather, upgrade, survive" elements to be repetitive. That's honestly kinda what I was expecting to happen. I feel like it's gonna be hard to find decent reviews since the hype has blown expectations out of proportions (though I feel like this past week people have been getting a better handle on this) but this review seems fair in it's assessment. I might grab it at full price but I wanta see what happens as the week goes on. As you said, the PC version is out Friday and at the very least I'll wait until we get back from the DC area to start looking into it. PC reviews should be in by then and the dev made it sound like in an AMA on reddit that the PC version should be graphically better (as it should) so we'll see what comes up by next week.

Well, be sure to let me know if you pick it up.  I know the multiplayer isn't a focus but it'd still be nice to play it while someone else is than dive in alone.

Our friend Mike is getting this, so we likely will as well.  For computer, of course.

EDIT: Even though there seems to be the slimmest of chances that people could actually find and play together, the fact that it may end up being a thing in the future is enough to probably pull us in.  Plus, with Nate and I being in the same room, on the same router, how much better can we make our chances?
