Maybe I'm misunderstanding but I feel like this is my main issue with the trailer. To me it seemed to show the story is focusing on the Major and how she's unique and how something happened to her to give her the cyberborg body and not focusing on the big question of "What is human?". I understand that can be a vessel for that question and message but all I got from it was "she's got a robot body and it's cool". Also I've only read the original manga once (and it's hard to grasp everything there in one read through) but between that and GitS: SAC I don't remember the Major's backstory being such a big deal. It is covered, definitely more so in season 2 of GitS: SAC, but it always was tertiary to the greater plot and deeper questions of humanity. They seem to be doing the opposite here. Obviously it's a trailer so they could be focusing on the character focused part of the plot to draw people in before getting too philosophical but it is a bit of a concern.

It's been the better part of a decade since I last read the original GitS but it is classic Shirow, which is to say, sometimes it's too far up its own ass to make sense.  To put it another way, when I was a teenager I thought there were parts I didn't get because "it's so deep man!"  I'm not as convinced of that now.

The thing with Kusinagi is in SAC they started suggesting that she was one of the first of these very realistic cyborgs because she was suffering from something as a child.  Her being the first of anything was not important in the original GitS, if anything her cybernetic body was used as an excuse to practically kill her on more than one occasion.   For example, there's a scene partway through where she's going to work after leaving some new lover's apartment and then she finds a cyber-man who has been turned into a bomb on the doorstep and the building explodes.  When she next appears it's because they'd recovered her cyberbrain and put her in a new body.

I might need to re-read the original GitS (I have it at home).  The reason why I keep pointing at it as inspiration here is because I'm seeing a lot of visual reminders to it and that this bad guy matches my memories of "The Puppet Master," who was the original's big antagonist.  I might be remembering wrong though it's been at least since before 2010 since I last re-read the original GitS.

Also casual reminder:  Major Makoto Kusinagi has always been bi-sexual, in like every version of her I've seen or read, so I don't bat an eye at that here.

Well I was more thinking it's a long manga with a lot going on, not necessarily deep. Couple of times had hard time keeping track of plot elements. I would like to read it again sometime though, maybe I should toss it on my Christmas list. Or maybe even my SOGKEYSGE list (dun dun DUN)!

Saw Arrival last night and, yeah, wow, that was really good. It's a real thought provoking sci-fi movie. Highly recommended.

So four of us went and saw the Ghost in the Shell movie for cheap Tuesday movie night - my thoughts and what we talked about after follow.

Overall good.  Certainly a solid passing grade.  C+, B-, somewhere in that range.  This is Ghost in the Shell, but it's kind of like baby's first Ghost in the Shell.  The overarching theme of identity is there, as are familiar players, but the universe is different.

Spoilers ahead.  At the start they make it pretty clear that Scarlett Johannson is not Motoko Kusinagi.  She's from a refugee family, has an Irish name, and is the first person to have a human brain in a completely manufactured body.  Different universe.  Then the plot takes some completely understandable turns and she finds out she's not the first.  The guy they're after was someone she knew and was experimented on before her.  Then as she continues following leads she find outs that her memories were wiped, possibly many times, and that her brain came from an anti cyberization runaway named Motoko Kusinagi.  She finds her mother (this Major has a family!) and they take down the bad guys.

Batou is pretty good and has some perfect Batou moments.  Chief Arumaki has his badass moments, and Saito and Togusa are there as well as fan service and to save the day.  It is a patchwork Frankenstein though.  They pulled a lot of parts from a lot of different iterations of GITS - like the friend who knew her from before being cyberized in 2nd Gig, the starting and ending with her falling from GITS:SAC, as well as the mimetic camouflage from the original movie (but no high velocity ammo from the same).  Oh, also total pet peeve that they start with opening text to explain the universe.  Lazy writing.  Regardless, I liked it.

Definitely good for a matinee.  But to me it is still like the recent Muse album, Drones.  Exactly good enough to be pretty good.  But REALLY makes me want to listen to their older, amazing albums.

I'll probably get on that soon.

Well I'm happy to hear it's not a complete travesty.

I feel obligated to go see it at some point but if it has a short life at theater I might not make it.  Next few weekends are going to be busy.

I've heard from a work friend that he enjoyed GitS as well. I think I'll give it a try at some point.

In other news, Thor: Ragnarok trailer dropped and this looks like a very fun movie
