Upset Alert!  Dignitas, who is currently in 9th place, has won Game 1 against 2nd place tied FlyQuest.  Can they close the series for the upset?

Yesterday actually had two big series in the NA LCS.  First for CLG fans, your team is in desperate need of wins as we turn on the 2nd half of the split.  They faced off against Immortals who have been having a better split, with just one more win than loss.

Then we had another battle for first/second place as TSM got their second chance at Cloud9, and a chance to hand them their first loss.

I've included the first game of both series below, and links to each game in the series as well.

Without spoilers I can say that both series are not boring domination rolls by any of the teams involved, so if you like close back and forth matches, you can get your fill of that here.

CLG v IMT

TSM v C9

Results: CLG managed to pullout a hard fought win against IMT, with their best showing being in game 3 when they played more to their team's strengths than the current meta, putting Darshan on Fiora and letting him carry from the top lane to leverage his lethality to render Immortal's Maokai null and void.  TSM, who suffered a crushing to defeat to Cloud9 2-0 in the season's first match, was able to appear the stronger team, if only just, in this 3 game series.  Both teams had their moments in terms of excellence and failure, but in the end TSM won out.  This gives Cloud9 their first loss of the split, and gets TSM closer to them in rank, though someone else will have to beat Cloud9 before TSM can tie for first.

This week's Breakdown covers how SKT finds ways to win without high initiation team composition.

Was running D&D yesterday so I didn't watch this series but I just watched the highlight set and it sounds like it was hype.  Another one for fans of upsets.

The set-up:  Immortals was a dominant team last year (top 1 or 2 both splits) but lost most of their roster going into this year.  This spring they have been trying to rebuild and struggling for it.  As we enter week 8, they have a chance to make it into the playoffs if they can win some key series, but it's going to be hard fought.  Cloud9 on the other hand has shown themselves to be clearly one of the best this split, second only to TSM, and need another series win to lock their playoff buy at 2nd, so a loss to Immortals would be disruptive.

Attached is the series highlight reel if you don't have time to watch the match and just want the summary. If you have the time though, check out the matches.

This past weekend was the last week of the Spring Split.  Playoffs begin April 8th.  These infographics do an okay job of summarizing how the week went. (Click for larger)

I should probably go back and watch some Pheonix1 games.  I knew they were doing better this split, but I wasn't expecting a 3rd place finish from them.  That team deserves more of my attention.

It is sad to see how far Immortals and Liquid have fallen.  Immortals really has not handled the loss of most of their team well compared to the dominant 2 splits they had in 2016, and poor Liquid has been consistently a 4th place team (so much so that it's a joke/meme) and just couldn't even make playoffs this time.

Last week kicked off the playoffs for Sprint split 2016.  Our teams this split are:

  1. Team Solo Mid (First Seed - bye)
  2. Cloud 9 (Second Seed - bye)
  3. Phoenix 1
  4. Counter Logic Gaming
  5. Team FlyQuest
  6. Team Dignitas

Last week pit Phoenix 1 against Dignitas and CLG vs FlyQuest.  In the end P1 3-0 crushed Dignitas, while CLG and FlyQuest had a more back and forth bout.  Generally speaking CLG was favored to win the series and in games 1 and 2 they looked it.  Game 1 specifically CLG's mid-laner Huhi put up a SHOW on how you dominate a game from mid-lane with Aureleon Sol.  Starting in Game 3 however FlyQuest got their hands on Rengar in the Jungle and started winning games.  The 5th game was back and forth but in the end FlyQuest pulled ahead, advancing further than expected in the playoffs and sending CLG, who is sporting the same roster they took to 2nd place at the Mid Season Invitational last year, out of playoffs and forcing them to end the split in 5th/6th place.

As always VODs of the games from last week can be found here.  Generally speaking the Fly vs CLG series was worth watching, though what kind of match you'll get will vary greatly based off which match you watch.  I think the most balanced game was game 5, where as 1-2 were strongly CLG's and 3 and 4 were strongly Fly's.

This week the two winning teams go up against our first round byes.  On paper Cloud9 should be favored with a better record (14W - 4L to 11W - 7L) and a higher seeding, but Phoenix1 did 2-0 Cloud9 in the regular season back in February so it may be premature to count them out.  Phoenix 1 also has former C9 jungler Meteos on their team which makes for an interesting note.

Meanwhile FlyQuest earned their ticket past CLG, but now they face a 15-3 TSM with top-laner Haunzer and mid-laner Bjersen earning MVP after MVP all season long.  Few have stood against TSM successfully (In fact those 3 are Cloud 9 in the beginning of the season, an Echo Fox upset in the middle of the season, and strangely Team Liquid in right before falling into the promotion tournament near at the end of the season).   FlyQuest has lost both of their series against the team during the regular season and I think most will tell you that their talent doesn't stack up against TSM's.   It's hard to say though - Hai has lead teams through rough gauntlets and reverse sweeps before, and it would seem almost perfect for FlyQuest and Cloud9 to have one last show down in the Spring Split finals in Vancouver (though that's a rivalry that C9 already has a two win lead in).

Catch the action this weekend.

I didn't watch like... any EU LCS this split, but this video for their Rookie of the year, Unicorn's of Love's Xerxe, is pretty tight.
