Okay so what I want to do is call on us to break out the original Game Night game - Starcraft: Brood War.  Unfortunately Blizzard killed battle.net 1.0 some time ago and I don't have time between now and Wednesday to research ways to hack online multi-back into SC:BW classic and test them to make things work.  Maybe if I wasn't running D&D this weekend, but I am, so don't have the time.

So having failed that I want to bounce a few ideas off people.

Rocket League Private Match with Team Auto Balance:

Of all the games I have on Steam Rocket League is one of the ones I have the most friends who own.  That means it should be easy for us to set up a private 3v3 or 4v4 match where every player is either a Game Knight or a bot.  However to keep things interesting the teams will be fluid from match to match.  Here's who I propose we do it:

  • The first match everybody just hits "auto" on their team and what you get is what you get.
  • The second match the highest scoring player from the winning team gets switched to the losing team.  The lowest scoring player from the losing team gets switched to the winning team.
  • On each subsequent match we do this again unless both teams agree to a rematch of the existing team.

We can adjust game mode, number of players and bots in between matches as we go.

If we like the idea of this format we could apply it to Space Marine's PvP mode as well moving people from Imperial and Chaos as the matches progress.

If that sounds a little to competitive/unfriendly to people then I think it might be fun to throw down the following (in this order.  Basically I wanna get my RTS on if possible):

  1. Dawn of War 1
  2. League of Legends (which we actually haven't played in a few weeks at this point)
  3. Sins of a Solar Empire
  4. Offworld Trading Company
  5. Grey Goo
  6. Starcraft II
  7. Dark Souls 3 (if applicable)

I seem to have forgotten this happened. I have no doubt you or someone told me but it completely skipped my mind and I'm a little saddened by it (probably again). Makes me hope the rumors of a remaster is true.

I like the Rocket League idea because I like Rocket League. I also can't promise I won't play a little bit before hand to get back into the game because I've been meaning to sorta get back into it >.>

The secondary list I am fine with also.

So,  Starcraft 1's Battle.net 1.0 isn't a thing anymore.

However, there are still ways to play Starcraft 1 online, and I just hosted two rounds to test that it works.

I use a program called "GameRanger" (freely available here) which I *think* sets up an artificial LAN connection to provide online play for several old games including Starcraft 1.

It has been a while since I set it up, but after the initial setup (install, make a user name/account, confirmation e-mail) I remember that it autodetected my installed games easily enough. I was able to join peoples' games without a lot of firewall trouble. I think I had to go through a little more of an ordeal to open my firewall in order to host games for other people, but that's neither here nor there.

All that being said, LAN connecting can often be tricky so if we're going to do this it would be best if we did a test-round before Wendesday!

If there's interest, then please let me know. My account name is "BountyHunterSAx" on GameRanger.  If you don't have Starcraft/Brood War I an help point you towards that too.

I'm also not sure how many can play.  I mean I have 2 legal CD-Keys for SC1 at this point, but you cannot buy it anymore.   So for folks who haven't turned in their SC1 CD-Key into their Battle.net account yet so they can download it whenever, we might not be able to get them in for a Starcraft 1 based Game Night.

So I installed Starcraft and was actually able to sign into classic battle net. Ahmad and I had issues finding each others games though (he apparently had some sort of restriction on his account). The Gameranger thing seemed to work just fine though.

Also I forgot I have a hockey game this night. It's a bit earlier so I won't be around for start of game night but I should show up later.

Dominion and I were able to get a couple rounds of Starcraft I in using GameRanger. No special configuration / firewall issues; just ran and ran smoothly.

So yeah; major limiting factor will probably be who is available and who has SC1:BW if we're going that route.

**EDIT**: Apparently same-time post as Dominion. There you go :P.

I got mine installed, so can try to participate this Wednesday. I'm Misharum on there, no surprise. Though fair warning; I'll be bad at Starcraft!

EDIT: So, does Game Ranger do the hosting in place of old Battle.net? If so, do you need legit keys for it? It seems to me that you wouldn't, so if someone who used to have it and lost their key wanted it, they could just find one online and use that.

@Misharum:
Added you in Gameranger.
And yes, I believe that is essentially correct. I do still have my legit SC1 key, but I know I've done something like what you're describing before.

If there's anyone who needs help finding, let me know via Steam
