The numbering would suggest this is a spinoff title rather than one of the "main-line" Monster Hunter games. For those it seems like the Switch will remain the home.

That being said, Monster Hunter World is, 100%, going to be sufficient reason for me to upgrade to Windows X if they gate it behind Direct X 12. And it looks BEAUTIFUL.

The trailer looked... pretty Monster Hunter to me?  What's the difference between a "main line" and "spin off" in this case?

With Monster Hunter games they often do multiple 'takes' with the same basic set of monsters for a given generation, with an advance to the next set including new combat mechanics, new locations and a sizable roster shift.
So, for example, the third generation included Monster Hunter Tri for the Wii with underwater combat whereas Monster Hunter Portable 3rd for the PSP (and the HD version for the PS3) used the same locations but added a few variations on some of the monsters aand had a 'drained out' lake area to removed underwater combat. Then Monster Hunter 3G for the Wii U and 3DS included more from both.

Then MH4 Ultimate heralded the 4th generation and off the bat included vaulting mechanics, mounting mechanics, a series of more aerial-based monsters, the insect glaive (a new weapon) etc. etc. A total 'next edition'.

With their spin-off titles, there is usually a difference in how the game is played; though not necessarily in the combat. Monster Hunter Frontier, for example, is an MMORPG rather than the small-party or solo-grind affair of the main titles. Monster Hunter "Dynamic Hunting" for the iOS has a much more click-based combat system rather than the classic action style.

So with MH World, it seems like they're doing something more akin to a drop-in/drop-out combat system rather than strictly instanced "4-players queue up for a dungeon/hunt". This is, of course, speculation on my part based only on the little that we've seen so far. That being said these sound like PC-appropriate improvements to the formula. Between this, God Eater, the Switch's new MH title, and Dauntless; I'm feeling very hopeful on getting my Monster Hunting Fix :P

I haven't watched this yet, but Kotaku just shared this Japanese press briefing on Monster Hunter World that contains gameplay.  You might need to jump around a bit - just taking a peek at it I noticed gaps of time where nothing seemed to be going on, but gameplay footage of the upcoming game is there.

So just started watching this -- and man, that grappling hook is new and shiny :). I love that they kept the mounting mechanics/verticality from MH4U too. Series staples of Rathian/Rathalos seem to be maintained, so that's good. And despite the open-world changes I'm still seeing 4-player hunting groups so my fear of mass MMO raid-fights seems ill-founded.

Plenty more to dig through but at this stage I'm definitely sold on it. Dauntless too - excited about it but waiting.

I want it on the record. Unless baby completely changes my life and priorities in a fashion that violates what follows - I fully anticipate upgrading my PC to run MH:World, possibly in 3x screen, at maximum settings in 60FPS, then playing it on the level I played Diablo 3.

It'll be worth it.

I suspect having a baby will interfere with that level of play.
