Wednesday Night Game Night: Feb. 16th, 2011

Game: League of Legends (Probably).

Time: 8pm eastern

Note: Rift will be in Open Beta on this day, so that's an option?  Aside from that I don't know what else to do aside from what we did last week with the split groups.  Or maybe Sins?

I'd be willing to give Rift a try if other folks are as well.

If only Tim and I were interested in Rift I will assume we won't be doing it for gamenight.  If I'm wrong however you can sign up for the beta and download the beta now so that you aren't caught doing that Wednesday.  Remember the Beta also goes from Tomorrow morning (tuesday) at 10am PST through next week Monday, so you'll have more chances to play it than any of the betas so far.

There's a bunch more about the game you can try to learn about it from the site, but I find it doesn't provide a lot of useful info so I'll try and do some quick bullet points.

  • The game has two factions, Guardians (blue team) and Defiant (red team), each with 3 races. The Guardians are your typical fantasy faction, faithful to the gods, and has humans, elves, and dwarves.  The Defiant are rebels against the gods, obsessed with technology and planar sciences, and consist of "different" humans, big purple humanoids who are somehow related to the stone plane, and evil elves.  From what I hear, Defiant is the more popular side in the Beta.
  • In the game you choose warrior, rogue, cleric, or mage as your base class.  Each class has 8, some day 10, possible 'souls' it can encompass.  These "souls" are really your class, deciding your skills and passives, and the mix of souls you choose results in a "Role."  Eventually you can have up to 4 roles, but by level 20 you'll probably only have 2.  IN GENERAL, Warrior souls are about tanking or melee DPS, with flavors featuring levels of mobility, cursing/diseases, a little spell flinging, and there's 1 pet mastery option as well.  IN GENERAL, rogue souls are about melee or ranged DPS, including a powerful pet soul, an interesting traps/bombs soul called "Sabotour" and also includes a party-support soul called "Bard" which I've heard nothing but good things about.  IN GENERAL cleric souls are about healing, though I hear there are a number of solid DPS options for them as well.  Clerics can make themselves tough, but I hear they lack sufficent threat-building mechanics to be true tanks.  IN GENERAL mages are spell DPS, with souls that include summoning allies, dots, and high burst burn down.  There's also a healing soul called "Chloromancer" which I hear heals as well as many Cleric souls do.
  • If you want a more specific peak at how the Soul Tree system might look in practice, here's a soul tree calculator you can use that is similar to talent tree calculators used for WoW.  I'm not 100% it's up to date, but it still gives you the idea.
  • The game features a questing system popularized by WoW, full open world environement, and world pvp if you play on a pvp server. There's also queued team pvp available as soon as level 10 that works on a 10-level-bracket system.
  • For those of you who care to dungeon, I hear the first one is available around about the same time Deadmines was in WoW (level 18-22) and is decent.
  • The game has mounts.  They keep flipping on availablility - the first beta I was in you had to be level 20, the last one you just had to afforid it, which I easily could by level 16.
  • Game's developer, Trinon Worlds, contains of a number of former Mythic staffers who were uber pissed about how that company ruined itself trying to make Warhammer Online.  In a lot of ways Rift does feel like what Warhammer was trying to be and strikes much, MUCH closer to success, so if you're one of those people who thought Warhammer was a good idea ruined by execution, you might want to give Rift a spin.

I will be updating and playing this last round of the beta regardless of if we do it for Gamenight or not, so feel free to contact me if any of you get in it and want a questing buddy, regardless of what we do for gamenight.  I'd like to give Guardian a spin since so far I've played nothing but defiant and I'm wondering if I wouldn't like the more Alliance-esque side more.

Thanks for the reminder! I'll get this downloaded tonight and play with you at some point even if we don't do it on Game Night.

Yeah, not really sure about this.  Like I've said before, I have my MMO.  Not against trying new things, I guess -- just never been interested in WoW or games that play like WoW.  We'll see.

Plus, it's not like me not playing a game (for whatever reason) has ever had any sort of effect on what you guys do as a whole, so me not playing is not going to ruin things for people anyway.

That came off a little more whiny than I meant, but I think you all get what I'm saying. PLAY WHATEVER. HAVE FUN.

Gah.

Random: I had a pretty good Renekton game last night. He's fun. Really good at hitting and running. Slice in, Stun, Sweep, Dice out. Good times.

Sounds like we'll be playing League of Legends this evening, likely with org PvP on the plan, with possible other gamez for those not in the 5-man org.
