Adam West passed away.

I wanted to take a moment to just say, I dunno if I'm the only one here old enough to have had a childhood appreciation for it, but when I was little, the Batman TV Show and movie staring Adam West was one of my favorite things on TV.  I was too young for the Tim Burton stuff, and the Batman Animated Series hadn't started yet.  Sure, once the Animated Series started it show up as my favorite Batman, but I know little kid me, like 5-8, probably would have found it a bit to serious and scary.  Adam West's Batman was fun and campy and a great way for me as a little kid to have been introduced to super heroes.

Movie Bob did this send up to you on this week's "In Bob We Trust." Thought I'd share it with everyone.

Sorry with the lateness of this notification, but My Neighbor Totoro is doing a couple of special screenings for the weekend, and the last one is Monday night at 7 pm, it would seem (might have to play around with the website to get it show you correct times/locations).  Might be good to check out!

Here's another one of MovieBob's "Really That Good" - this time on Transformers: The Movie, which was the first, and nearly only, piece of Transformers work that I have ever engaged with.  I am like one of the viewers he describes who went into it knowing very little about the series going in.  I never saw an episode, I had maybe 1 friend who played with the toys, and I knew a couple of choice names like Megatron, Starscream, and Optimus Prime.  I also didn't watch it when it was new, but rather with a bunch of Port Huron High School friends for whom it was a nostalgia trip to a decade before, so while they were gushing about this scene or that, I had a million questions, not all of which they could answer.   Point is it left me with the vague impression that Transformers was on the cusp of being more than it seemed to be, but most of the time doesn't quite get there, but can be fascinating all the same, and found The Movie specifically to be an interesting Sci-Fi cartoon.

MovieBob here dives deep into the question of the validity of a creative work and how it makes its audience feel if the original intent of the work was a commercial, and I think he makes some great points along those lines.  Also this reinforces to me how evil Hasbro is and continues to make me uncomfortable that they control one or two properties I care about.

As a fairly big fan of Transformers, I liked that. Now, I say I'm a "big fan" but I'm not really super deep into what was the lore of the whole series. I really just liked big robots that could transform as a kid and where I lived at the time I could only catch a little bit of the actual TV series. Also I think that movie occupies that weird region of time where I don't really remember watching it for the first time but just know that I had watched it. So the whole big thing about Optimus Prime dying wasn't a huge emotional moment for me because, well, in my mind it was just something that happened. I just can't honestly remember being surprised due to this and getting all upset. I mean, yes, it is an emotional moment when I'm watching the movie but it didn't upset me.

Anyways, I think I really like how the movie is "good but not good" and how they accidentally did something "too well" that some plans backfired on them. The whole killing off the main cast in the first arc is such a great example. Murder everyone to sell new toys. But then again, holy crap, they just murdered all the main stays? That is just bold as shit if it weren't for the corporate reasons as Bob pointed out. It's great! Also I do love the crazy 80's rock sound track and some of the crazy retro-futuristic art that comes out of this movie. It's so bizarre and amazing. Ultimately, I think Bob's analysis makes me feel a little less guilty for liking this weird film. It really is that good.... just for bizarre reasons... and also not good for reasons XD

The two things I'm taking away from this are:

  1. MovieBob does really good reviews.
  2. Rodimus Prime is a FUCKING TERRIBLE NAME.

MovieBob does really good reviews.

I should probably start checking out his stuff again. I remember liking him with the Escapist but when he left he did a string of reviews for bad movies that felt like they were just really long rants and I kinda got put off by that. I've liked all the "Really That Good" stuff he's put out though.

Rodimus Prime is a FUCKING TERRIBLE NAME.

I get they didn't want to leave his original name since he sorta changed and Hotrod sucks but... Rodimus Prime still sucks.
