Lol yup.

Yeah their thinking was much the same as yours:  There's too many champs and with only 3 bans your team cannot effectively prevent all the OP picks from going through, so by raising the bans to 5 it really enforces that a team has to have players with depth to win.

The process works as such:

  • Blue side still gets first pick, Red side still gets last pick.  Depending on when we are in the meta and the match ups, there have been times where the value of last pick is higher than first pick, and vice versa.
  • First each team bans 3 champions, alternating, with blue side going first.
  • Once the first 6 champions are banned (3 per side), Blue side makes first pick.
  • Red then makes 2 picks.
  • Blue side then makes 2 picks.
  • Red side makes 1 pick.
  • At this point Both sides see 3/5ths of the other team's composition.  They then make 2 more bans, with red side going first and alternating.   This phase is interesting because in most cases you have a pretty good idea of what the other team is trying to do with their comp and this gives you a chance to snuff them, OR you know what you're team wants to do with their comp, so you ban the counter-picks to your two remaining picks.
  • Red then picks 1 champion.
  • Blue then picks their last 2 champions. This finishes their composition.
  • Red then picks their last champion.  This gives red side the chance to make their last pick a counter pick to something blue side picked in case there is a hard counter.

Pick-ban is actually quite fascinating at high level play, but getting anything out of it requires a pretty solid understanding of the current state of champion balance, champion meta, and which camps are "flex," which is to say, the ones that LOOK like a X pick but can also be Y pick to throw off the enemy's pick-ban.  Without that it sometimes seems odd and unpredictable as a spectator.  The commentators do a great job of helping with this as they are typically in the know of the current trends.

There's now a site about the Aatrox rework.

There are also two new skins coming for Garen and Darius called "God-King."  I know nothing about it other than these "Login Screen" videos Riot has posted to YouTube.

So.  League of Legends right now has entered into one of it's BIZARRE Wild West phases in terms of meta.

I'm watching a professional match right now where one team has a pretty normal comp, but the other team has:

  • Moved their jungler (the player) into the top lane where he is playing Rengar
  • Moved their top-laner (the player) into the Jungle where he is playing Talliah
  • Their mid is playing Ryze
  • Their bot-lane is Lucian and Braum

This is just a taste of where the game is right now.    The short of what is going on, as I understand, is that Riot has nerfed critical hits into the ground.  So every ADC that focus on crit builds (ex: Sivir, Tristana) suddenly find themselves far less capable to fill the needs of this position.  While some marksmen are still filling the role (specifically Kog'Maw and Kai'sa who can do tons of damage w/ or w/o crit, or ones that add utility like Ashe with her arrow and slows), people are strongly considering playing TOP LANE FIGHTER CHAMPS like Yasou and Master Yi in the traditionally ADC position.  In fact, in Solo Q right now Master Yi + Taric is an infamous bot-lane.   Of course once you do this in bot, this opens up the rest of your team to rethink their comp, which is resulting in some ADCs going top, some mids going jungle, ending up with two mages, ending up with extra supports, or extra junglers... it's fucking madness.

So I bring this up to say if there were any time for us to try crazy fucking plans in LoL, now is the time to do it.   I'll try and make another post after this week's maches are over to give more examples of now crazy thigns are right now.

Hey just in time for me to try and explain the new meta, they gave good old Phreak his own show!  The Phreak Show is a solo bit, a little over 5 minutes where he talks about what's new and why it's having the effect it is having on the game.  I recommend you check it out!

Wooo this takes me back to the days when he was just an intern at Riot doing Twitch streams about patch notes and item values.

Details are finally coming out about the VS 2018 event, pitting "God King Garen" vs "God King Darius"

The event runs from June 27th to July 5th and appears to be mostly about playing games for one side or the other to complete quests and earn rewards.  The big thing for me is the internal battle I'm fighting with myself and my want to have both of these skins because they're both bad-ass.

Aatrox Champ Spotlight.  Serious, SERIOUS rework.  Much more Riven, much less "automatic health stealling machine."

His rework is oddly timed as the pro-scene was just starting to fall in love with this camp in the Jungle and Top.

I've brought up a few time how the META is LoL right now is BONKERS

SO Bonkers that one of the most popular pro players in North America, TL Doublelift (formerly TSM Doublelift, formerly CLG Doublelift), made this video about the issues that can come up from a game that changes and evolves too often.

Now, Doublelift has a reputation of being a hot-mouth'd jerk (his trademark quote being "Everyone Else Is Trash"), but that meme was started years ago and in the last couple of years he's been showing a considerable amount of growth and maturity (which you'd expect from someone who started their pro gaming career in their late teens now hitting their late twenties).

This video is very well done, very insightful, and very well articulated.  If you have any interest in eSports at all, League of Legends at all (not just eSports), I recommend giving this a watch.
