Okay cool, then I will not feel like I need to grab the game Day 1 either - unless I'm bored and feel like it.  Thanks for the input all.

The adds on Steam made me come in here looking for this thread. I've never picked up a monster hunter, because either A. I don't "think" I ever had the right console for it. B. It never sounded super interesting as a single player game unless I'm really missing something. I've been having fun with Dauntless though, especially with a group, and even done some solo queueing every once in a while. This seems like it will hit the same chords, but be a more polished game. I think I will definitely be picking this up mainly to play with people and if multiple people were picking it up day one, I would do so as well, but I will wait until more people pick it up/reviews come in on the port since that appears to be what people are waiting on.

Also... Space Marine.

I know I know it's IGN, but in this post-Total-Biscuit world I still haven't found a trustworthy source I like for "Port Reports."

Sounds like at least IGN found the PC Port to work well and running quite well.

If I hear more I'll update this post.

UPDATE: This Kotaku article talks about PC Performance as well.

100 minute-ish first impressions:

  • Maybe I'm just old but I hate it when games have tutorials/introductions that take this long to go through.  After 100 minutes of playing I've only done one tiny hunt and have sat through a boatload of talking and running and being tutorialized too, and I still don't feel like I'm being taught the right things.   This game looks fun but I feel like right now the story & tutorials are getting in the way of me being able to play it!
  • I might have to remap these buttons to something more Dark Souls like if I can.
  • I like that ranged weapons are an option from the word go and they all seem fun.
  • Holy crap a lot of the two-handed weapons are super sluggish.
  • Game recommended Medium graphics settings and it ran fine.  I bumped it up to high and still maintained a smooth 60fps (feels like anyway) so I think the port feels good for me and my rig.
  • Really FAST loading times!  Impressive!

The game currently only has 55% positive reviews, a score that has been slowly but steadily dropping since launch. I've been browsing some of the negative reviews and the seem to fall into two roughly equal sized categories. First is legitimate complaints, and the second is people playing on old, mid-range PCs who are upset that they can't play at max graphics settings and get 60 FPS.

I've seen a stupid amount of reviews in there of people complaining that they're getting frame rates in the 40s on mid graphics settings with some framerate drops, but they they post their system configurations and they've got rigs that are 20-30% weaker than my nearly two year old computer in both CPU and GPU.

That being said, there do appear to be legitimate complaints!

  1. Mouse and keyboard is apparently weird. They've got some strange mouse acceleration stuff going on that you can't disable because they're essentially using mouse input to simulate a joystick rather than just using the raw mouse input. Just using a controller when playing seems to be extremely recommended (but was how I'd play anyway).
  2. No graphics options to turn off Depth of Field, Bloom, or Motion Blur. Some people seem really upset about this. Not having played yet, I can't speak to how bad it is. But I too hate Motion Blur and prefer to turn Bloom down.
  3. Server instability is currently causing trouble with multiplayer. That'll probably clear up in a bit as they get the servers load balanced better and the initial rush dies down, but that kind of trouble on launch is still frustrating as a player.
  4. The multiplayer system has... quirks. I don't know the whole story, but there seems to be trouble doing multiplayer for story missions. You can't multiplay a story mission until everyone (or maybe just one person, seeing conflicting reports) who wants to has watched the cut scenes in the mission solo (which means essentially playing through the entire mission). Or something like that. I don't know the ratio of story missions to regular hunting, but that does sound freakin' annoying to work around and very disrupting to trying to play through the game together with someone(s).
  5. Denuvo DRM. Denuvo DRM encrypts all your games files with a rotating key. You can only get the decryption key from their servers, and have to get a new key every time you play. Which means you have to always be online. And decrypting the files to actually use them is a CPU heavy process. Plus Denuvo will only let you play on five different systems per day, which isn't a limit I'd ever bump up against, but still is annoying to have a restriction like that on a product you pay for. On the plus side, Adam has said that load times are fast, so that's great news! Sounds like as long as you have a good enough system, then the decryption isn't a performance hindrance.

All that said, I'm probably going to pick this up today. I'm starting to itch to try it!

FWIW:  DMZ and I each have friends on our Steam list that have been launching and re-launching the game a lot in the last couple of days.   I have yet to have the game crash on me, but I am not everyone and I recognize that.

As for mouse/keyboard issues, this is a console port, and I've been playing with my XBO controller (the same one that got me through all of Dark Souls - it's seen better days) without issue so far.  I would recommend the controller, though I am having difficulty remapping controller buttons... maybe we can't?

Also fair warning:  some graphics settings can't be changed while the game is off the title screen, and others might trigger a full restart, which feels like BS on a $60 game but again... sigh... console ports...

I haven't tried multiplayer yet... I have had the game get stuck loading multiplayer instances I didn't ask for until it gave up on the server.  I'm still figuring out how "multiplayer" works because this is one of those games where it has an "offline mode" but it doesn't make it super obvious how to use it short of it failing to find a server and then defaulting you into offline mode (which you can end at anytime at an NPC at the hub city).

Yeah, I've seen Bruce in and out a little bit, but someone from Amani Shando (probably who J is seeing) has been in and out just over and over and over and over.

EDIT: I did buy the game and am currently downloading it, but likely won't get to play until tonight. Kelly and I have some errands to run, and her parents are coming out for dinner as it is their wedding anniversary and our dating anniversary.

One weekend in status:

  • Two characters, one HR (Hunter Rank) 2 the other HR 3. I guess this is a way of gauging your progress through the story?
  • I started a guy (Vergil) and decided after two hours I was curious about what some of the outfits looked like on a gal so I started a gal (Aya) who is now ahead of Vergil ... whoops.
  • Vergil's been focusing on ranged weapons (mostly light and heavy bowgun) while Aya's been 100% Kinsect Blade.
  • Played one 2 player session with Ahmad late last night.

Thoughts:

  • The game itself runs pretty much perfectly on my machine on HIGH settings.
  • The network appears to be another story.  Steam kicks me off my friends list periodically during play, which is why I think we've been seeing our friends seeming to start & stop MH:W a lot.  My guess is there is some integration issue with Steam that they still have to iron out.
  • The network issues did result in Ahmad getting kicked out of our co-op hunt at one point.  Thankfully the game gracefully recovered by just breaking apart our sessions and we each got to finish our hunts solo.    It would have been better if it attempted re-connection, but I still prefer it over it kicking us both out and the hunt automatically failing.
  • The way this game is affecting me so far reminds me of the first FIRST time I started Phantasy Star Online.  What I mean by that is the game is very new to me, so addiction doesn't set in while I'm still trying to understand it.  I remember when I started PSO the first time being like "huh, okay... this is this?  And that's that?  Hmm... I dunno I guess I'll stick with that and see how it goes??"  A week later I was hooked.  3 nights into MH:W I can sense something kinda similar happening:  I spent the first night very confused and frustrated with the tutorial for not shutting up and letting me hunt monsters.  The second night I started getting to hunt monsters and was like "Huh - this is actually way more straightforward than all their tutorial windows and terminology makes it sound.  It's kinda fun playing around in this sandbox, gathering stuff, tracking big bads, shooting or slicing them up, and then going back home to make better gear from their drops."    Third night was like "Okay, WHAT ARE WE DOIN TONIGHT LET'S GO."  As I type this I am starting to understand what my goals are for my next session, etc etc.
  • I am playing with controller.  I recommend you do too.
  • This game has pheonominal presentation.  I mean the story and NPCs are passable, with some laughable facial animation, but the world is beautiful, vibrant, and feels alive and is a joy to climb, crawl, and run through.  The creatures are all wonderfully animated, suiting their size and the power you'd expect.  It feels satisfying to take them on and appropriately terrifying when one breaks into a scene and starts messing up your hunts.
  • I am already impressed by the depth of the weapon design in the game.  At first I wasn't sure about it because there's A LOT of "What the fuck is this even?" weapons in the game.  There's a small number of "oh okay this is a sword and shield" or "Okay this is just a sword and board," and more "Okay so I guess this is a double-saber, but it also launches insects at targets that gives me buffs?"  Or "This is a sword and shield that charges the sword and, when fully charged, you jab the sword into the shield and it becomes a greataxe and you then unleash cleaving hell on your foes?"  As I start to understand these weapons though I appreciate the way you can build a playstyle around any of them, and, most importantly, that the game lacks some sort of class system at character creation that forces me into a path.  I could spend most of the game using one weapon, decide I want to try another, and I could start building up/upgrading that weapon immediately.
  • The Fashion Souls train is here and there's a lot of coal in that engine.  Already I'm taking down monsters for the first time and getting excited at the idea of getting back to town to see what cool/cute/sexy/hardcore/ABSURD outfit I can make out of their hide.
  • I like the music and sound design overall.  Well done there I think.
  • I think I'm going to be tempted to do a lot more of my grinding in expeditions instead of quests because I prefer the free-form nature, but I may change my tune once I understand the game better.
  • PALICOS ARE THE BEST THING!  I HAVE A TINY CAT WARRIOR WHO TRAVELS WITH ME!  I HAVE NAMED THEM AFTER MY REAL CATS!  THEN CATS COOK ME FOOD IN CAMP!  AND THEY CAN HAVE GRUFF DEEP TOUGH GUY VOICES! AHHH!

I think that's it for now?  I definitely think this is a better made game than Dauntless, but I also think Dauntless is more intuitive and easier to figure out, and appreciate that you don't have to sit through 30 minutes of tutorials to start playing Dauntless with your friends.  I'm a little worried that the deeper I get in MH:W it's going to get very grindy/intimidating, but so far it's not been frustrating, instead it's been motivating.

Echoing much of what Adam said (though I'm not as far into the game as him). The game looks beautiful and is running great on my system. It defaulted me to high settings, though I bumped down a couple things to Medium before even seeing how it ran, and then had to turn on V-Sync as there was horrible screen-tearing going on in the middle of my screen. I'm still getting 60fps in town with no dips (though I need to see if that holds up while hunting still).

I am intimidated by the sheer number of mechanics that got thrown at me all at once. Tons of weird weapons and everything about them, keeping them sharp, having to eat to keep my stamina bar at max, consumables out the wazoo, food back in town for buffs, lots of crafting, tons of gathering materials and monster signs, etc. I'm sure I'll figure it out, but I'll probably be playing non-optimally for a while until I get the hang of it all.

That being said, none of those things stopped me from getting in game and doing the first two n00b hunts! I personally like the combat more than Dauntless. I have tons of trouble reading the monsters in Dauntless to know when to dodge. So far in Monster Hunter this hasn't been a problem. I still get hit for being locked into a combo that I shouldn't have started, but that's on me.

The frustration I do have is with the camera. It has a lock on mode, but doesn't snap to the monster I want most of the time if I'm fighting a group and breaks off the monster if I try to turn the camera to see something in another direction (I'd rather it rubber-banded back to the monster when I let go of the stick).

I've got like two hours clocked in the game so far, though am not as far as that should imply due to spending like half an hour trying out the different weapons. I'm rocking the twin dagger type weapon so far, but also liked the Kinsect Blade that Adam's using, the regular sword-and-board, and the weird sword-and-board-that-turns-into-a-giant-axe.

Definitely looking forward to playing more!
